Is quite easy, just txt changes.
Fist, you'll need a few programs to extract the files, change them, and reintroduce them.
Resedit2
Textedit
Lodedit
Obviously, the files you want to change are found in the folder 'data' of your HoM&MIII folder, so extract those programs there.
Before you start, make a backup of the folder data, so if something goes wrong you can paste the back up and avoid the tedious reinstall
Now, run Resedit, and File-Open resource file [control+o], and choose H3bitmap.lod. You'll see a lot of files there. So, make the search quicker, selec only .txt files like in the following picture.
Right click on CRTRAITS.TXT, and choose 'extract to', and choose the folder where you want to extract the files.
The same with Building.txt.
Now you can edit the files, and you have two ways: With notepad or with textedit. The problem of using notepad is that you'll see everything disordered, but with textedit that doesn't happen, so use textedit
Open texedit, and click on the left button, like in the picture, and choose crtraits.txt
Now, what you want, more creatures growth? Easy busy, go to the colum Growth, and change it at your wish(for the first time, add a 10 so you'll easyly notice the changes). Remember that is the base growth, the buildings citadel&castle increase it.
Stronger units? Then change the colums Hit Points, Speed, Attack, Defense, Low&High. (low&High damage).
You can't change creatures abilities, apart from that last 2 colums, the rest can be change at your wish
Once you have done the changes you want, save it(clicking on the button just right of the open file).
Do the same with building, you can only change their cost.
Once you have change everything, is time to reintroduce it to the game data so when you play you can see the changes. For that, we'll use Lodedit.
First, move CRTRAITS.txt&building.txt to the folder data of your heroes III.
When you extract lodedit you see that is composed of two files: LODEDT, and REPLACE. The last one is a bat file, similar to txt files, so it can be change with notepad. So right click on REPLACE and choose 'edit'.
You'll see something like ''lodedt @NOM_DU_FICHIER_.???'', change that to->lodedt @CRTRAITS.TXT
Then, save it and close it. Then run both files(LODEDT&REPLACE), so CRTRAITS will be reintroduced.
Again, edit REPLACE.bat, and change lodedt @CRTRAITS.TXT->lodedt @Building.TXT
And again the same, run both programs.
And that's all, now you should see the changes you made in the game.
Hope this helps
And if you have any questions, ask them and I'll answer you as best I can.

wow thank you, that was absolutely helpful, exactly what i was looking for. i've already tried it and it worked.
it think 2 phoenixes per week was way too overpowered, i will see what i can do now. maybe, i will strenghten the phoenix and make it 1 phoenix per week, or i'll make them a little weaker or more expensive. i will think first, what would be the most suitable choice.
thanks again for the quick and detailed response

I used to edit the whole game with this method before i had WoG.
You can change the creature names also.
And the names of the artifacts, and make a sword to be held in the left hand, too. (by editing a different txt files)

I'm glad that it helped you
But crtraits&building aren't the unique files when modding.
Take a look at:
ballist.txt(the catapult file, it covers:chances of hitting the wall/towers/etc..., chances of 0 or 1 or 2 of damage, and number of shoots; with and without ballistic mastery).
CrBanks.txt: here you can change the numbers of creatures(but no the creatures), the reward(iirc, you can't add artifacts to a place that is not supposed to give, like an imp cache).
HCTRAITS.txt: Here you can change some heroes parts, like starting primary skills, chances of getting that at leveling, chances to learn secondary skills(a cleric with necromancy), and chances of appearing at taverns).
HOTRAITS.txt: Here you can change the numbers of starting units of each single hero, so Craj Hack could start with 500-1000 goblins, and ther rest of barbarians with 1
movement.txt: Here you can change the movement at ground(1st column)(depends of hero creatures speed), the movement at sea, and artifact bonus.
SPTRAITS.txt: A must at balacing, you can change: spell level, the magic school that belongs to(level 1 air implosion is funny), cost(depending of magic mastery), damage per spell power point, damage base(again depends of magic mastery), and chances of appear at each castle.
Walls.txt: Here you can only change the life of castle's structures which are hit during a siege. iirc, the max hit points are 4, so I'd avoid a higher number.
That are the most important files when modding, hope it helps you(and anyone) to reach a more balanced game

You forgot
ARTRAITS.TXT -You can edit the names of the artifacts, and the slots of the artifacts (sword -left hand), if you're a mapmaker, you can make some good quests .

well, really thank you, storm-giant. your editing advices were really helpful, and with my new modifications, the game will be hopefully much more fun to play.
i edited the spells a little bit, especially the ai preferences. i hope that, from now on instead of summoning stupid elementals, ai will look for mass slow/haste/prayer. i was testing a little, and it looks promising so far.
i also made town portal very expensive (80 sp), so i have to plan more carefully, before i go away from a town, leaving it defenseless. it also keeps me from teleporting from town to town, collecting creatures for my army. i also made fly and dimension door expensive.
i am also considering to strenghten the city walls, because i really like seeing small armies resisting against bigger ones. my real concern is, that ai is not so clever and doesn't want to stay behind the walls while defending against my siege. so maybe stronger walls will make the game easier for me, which i don't want to see of course.

I've done editing for test purposes. And I played WOG for about a year. But I like to play regular H3 the way the developers meant it to be played. It's a darn good game just the way it is.

It's unfortunate that lots of the files are hard-coded, and you need to change the exe to modify them.
Hence, for example crtraits is simply editable and results in the way, how you want it to be, but sstraits, for example, does not...

We are two to think that. But certainly HoMM was never played in any tournament the way the developers meant to. Even less today.

I know its a little late, but I'm trying to translate heroes 3 to my native language and made some progress.
But it seems that every time i edit the arraytxt file, like the explanation for attack skill, the position shift 2 places. what i mean is the expalantion for attack skill in the heroes screen now replaced the explanation for Power Skill.
is there something wrong.... I was careful enough to just change the 'bonus' word with 'bonu'. And put the file back into the bitmap.lod.
thanks for reply.

You may have deleted some tabulation marks. Make sure you're using right tools, such as TextEdit or Notepad++.

is it possibly to use these files to change certain heroes starting traits? for example: i want to remove mysticism from thant and give him earth magic as a starter instead, is this possible? how do i do it?
is it possible to change the stats boost some heroes give to a creature? for example: could i boost fafner so that his nagas are faster/stronger/more attack/def/ hp? or could i boost yog so that his cyclopses do more dmg or dont suffer the range penalty (as if they had the golden bow)?
is it possible to change the tax collectors so that they earn an amount dependent on their level, say for example +$100 per level of hero?
basically i want to edit almost every hero in the game to make them ALL worth getting, so that the game is 100% winnable with ANY hero.
also i recall reading on this website that you can edit the random map generator to produce different types of maps (in terms of crazy things spawned), would it be possible to say give every kingdom on the map a unique dragon dwelling? ie give each player either fairy dragons or rust dragons or crystal dragons or whatever and say 1 utopia each? is this sort of customization possible?
is it also possible to change the number of spells given in each level of the mageguild for certain towns. i want to make the fortress give:
5 level 1/2 spells at mage guild level 1
3 level 3/4 spells at mage guild level 2
1 level 5 spell at mage guild level 3
i would also like to edit the costs of each upgrade to include all of them, buying a lvl 1 will still be 2000gp 10wood 10 ore but the other upgrades will cost what the accumulations of what upgrading would cost.
thanks in advance, i looked for topics on each of these questions but the search is useless on this website and it wont allow me to make my own thread. if anyone has answers to any of these questions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

not possible with text files. To change something like this, you will need to study ERM scripts (see WOG sub-forum or use Google search).

already done in homm3 WT version.

read about homm3 TE or homm3 WT versions

That sounds a comprehensive explanation, but i ran into a problem... i dont knmow what happened, i downloaded the three files and extracted them AFTER having a backup of Data folder. i dont think i was actually able to 'run' those LODEDT and REPLACE, as all i saw was a box opening for a split second and thats all... also, i have a CRTRAIT0.TXT file, not CRTRAITS.TXT as u say... What happened was i basically changed black dragon stats and cost to look like a more powerful level 7,5 crit, all other lvl 6 crits to below 100 hps, then i saved... and when i tried opening the WoG Editor, some error message appeared (that windows white box message saying it was trying to fix or whatever).
Did that all in the Data folder (later i replaced with the original backup folder).
Basically, what I wanted was the idea that the great WoG folks made for the Rampart town (i.e, changed the lvl 7 crit) but for Dungeon, coz i think Black Dragon should be the real scraiest lvl 7 crit.
?
EDIT: OK , after some digging, me founds out this walk-sru:
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=32519&pagenumber=4
the critical difference here is the ZCRTAITS.TXT, with Z!
After doing that little difference, it is working fine
Now... I guess somewhere in those files I can edit "creature growth" WITH castle / external building, yesn't? Coz me Black Dragon got really powerful (again, I liked very much the rampart switch allowed by the WoG team).
Any hintz?
Many thanx - p
