It is no surprise the Supreme Court will wind up deciding the issue. The US is ruled by the courts, not be elected representatives. The ruling was fairly narrow though, and does nothing to overturn the laws of states that define marriage as between a man and a woman and does not require such states to recognize same sex marriages performed in other states.

The THEORY is that voters elect the presidents, the presidents appoint the Justices; therefore, the voters hold ultimate power in the long run.
