of course it IS a SEVERELY underfunded game, but I really like the new elements introduced, most of all like creatures can wander around without heroes.

IMO H4 isn't worse or better than the other heroes games. It's just different from the others, having its ups and downs.
For example the magic system is ok in the others, maybe more balanced, but there's a point in the system of H4: haven shouldn't raise dead! (not on its own at least)
And the siege of towns is way better in H4 than in the others IMO. I mean hundreads of nonflying beasts waiting before the gate 'cause the catapult shoots randomly is just stupid.
Once in H5 i defended my town against a 4-5 times bigger army than my own simply by placing my troops so the devil couldn't teleport inside. The towers won the combat for me. Try that in H4 =D

I think it wasn't what most people expected. The average Heroes-player wanted a Heroes 3,5 but this was more like an entirely new game. And it was rushed, it lacked many of the features that had been promised (like the Outpost town) and the alignment system made creating new factions an impossibility, but more importantly; it lacked a working multiplayer function!
That's said... I still think it was the most successful of the games. It's a perfect combination of rpg and strategy, the campaigns are probably the best and deepest of the series, the stories are amasing. (especially if you compare them to the Heroes V-campaigns) And it's quite unique with it's academy and asylum towns and the very interesting environments, it isn't a mainstream fantasy game with humans, elves and dwarves fighting orcs or undead. Sure I would have like one or two more towns and a more logical map editor, but apart from that, it's close to perfect! I say it's at least 8,5 out of 10.

In Bulgaria NOT hating on Homm4 is almost... anti-nationalist.
For some reason out of all my gaming frs (and thats like.. a lot of geeks and nerds and potheads) unaninmously agree on that.
I for one, have tried on several ocasions to get into it and have failed about 3-4 hours in. Each time.
