Heroes II Gold not launching...
I just bought Gold last night, but I can't get it to do anything. Like, there isn't even an error message. I've watched it in Process Explorer; I see HEROES2W.EXE (or EDITOR2W.EXE if I try the map editor) in the list, but after a few seconds it just disappears. Sometimes it's accompanied by Dr. Watson.
Running Windows XP SP3. I've tried all the compatibility mode options and none of them work. Anyone know what this is or how to fix it?

I dont like to modify my S.O. everytime i find incompatibility as Windows is the king of it. So, if i were you i would install VirtualBox and create a virtual machine with the properties recommended by the game. If you want to but dont know how then ask me. Else i dont care.

Funny thing - on a whim (I was bored), I popped my Might and Magic VII disc in, and the same thing happened to me. I tried opening up the disc in explorer and selecting the SETUP and AUTORUN files, and the computer just sits there. They are listed in the task manager, but nothing happens. Can't even install the game.
I searched online and found a few mentions of the same problem, but no fixes.
EDIT: But it works fine on my other computer running exactly the same operating system. Go figure.

Physical copy or downloaded from Good old Games?
DrWatson is a debugger program built into Windows. Anyway, try running msconfig and removing any programs you don't think you need starting up when the computer does to avoid any memory conflicts. You can also go to the services tab and select "hide all microsoft services" and remove some of the ones left in there too. Just be a bit more careful on the services side of things.

I'd the same problem. The patch available of Flamestryke's home page solved my problem (windows xp user).

How do you install a patch before installing the game?

I downloaded it, but not from gog.com. After they screwed up H1, I don't trust them anymore. The site I downloaded from is honest, and other games I've gotten from them work.

Oh I thought it was after installation the game didn't run, my bad.
Then I've no solutions at the moment, sorry.
Edit: Though I'd guess using deamontools could be the solution, mounting an imaginary disk, but I don't have much knowledge about it, and not quite certain.

Unfortunately, no. I basically put the disc in, the notice comes up asking me if I want to run the autorun.exe file, I say yes, and then nothing happens. Under task-manager, the autorun file is listed under active processes, but nothing happens. The same thing happens if I access the file manually. Bizarre thing is that it works fine in my other laptop.. but that's not the one I wanted to install the game on.

Okay, progress has been made... my computer had a stop error and restarted, and now it gets a little farther. The editor works completely now, but the main game brings up a window that stays black, as if the game was loading perpetually. Anyone know how to fix this?

Solution:
Try installing under Safe Mode. This worked for me for Might and Magic VII. Maybe it will solve your H2 gold problem as well.

Finally got around to restarting, so I tried this, and... it actually made it worse. The editor is broken again. e_e

I'm using Windows XP SP3 and had no problem with the install. I just made sure that my compatibility was sufficient for the game was all. Runs great. You must have a pirated version or something. I have 2 versions of HoMM2, both NWC/3DO versions and both installed without a hitch. Running full screen mode too.

You could also try using DOSbox or some other DOS emulator I think. That's how I play Heroes 2 on Vista.

DOSBox is exactly the reason I opted not to buy H2 from GOG.com. Totally out of the question.

Well, you better find some way of getting your HoMM2 to work. I'm launching the HoMM2 Map Archive......something like 650 maps or so.
