haven early:

here are a few things i find work very well with haven early on, and can also be extended into longer  games.
Between vittorio and Dougal, i actually find dougal the better creeping hero... 2 main reasons... first of all, he can potentially get flaming arrows by level 3, and second of all, archers are the main unit in terms of creeping damage, and dougal archers + archery skill helps in this regard.

In fact i've even been able to creep lots of white bear riders on DAY 1 on some maps, with only a few peasant losses

generally i would go for light magic, war machines, logs (always essential), attack- for flaming arrows, leadership or something like that... what's really great about flaming arrows early on is not the -50% def perk, but the +50 dmg perk. obviously this tactic looses effectiveness as the game drags on... but quick creeping with a powerful dougal can lead to a quick accumulation of resources which can lead you to a much better army. In any case dougal will be able to level up quite quickly since he will be constantly fighting and he would not have to stop by the castle to get army/spells.

Ive tried dougal on maps like genesis, which is definately a "long game" map... i think i skipped on war machines in order to get something else, but the archers still got the job done war machines just makes it much easier, especially if you're just starting to play again. WOW this was much longer than i originally intended. Sorry about that XD i hope this helps you a little bit in terms of playing haven

Hmm, I've tried a few more games with AI. I'd say I'll agree with most of the tips here. Could survive early game; but I always get overwhelmed in big maps. The AI will somehow have an army twice of mine sometime in month 2 or 3. I think I attack too slowly.

Also, it seems the ToH maps are slightly easier than the ubi maps. Easier in the sense of creeping and higher starting town levels.
