The hero recruitment screen looks cool! You can see a wheel which shows all the primary magic schools and pick a hero from each. So you can have a choice between more than just two heroes.
http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/screens/0,10865,2840157-6,00.html
It also looks like you can customize the hero you hire.. You might be able to choose a primary skill right off the bat or maybe even change its gender, though I can't be certain..
Another thing, some creature dwellings can't be built if say a Mage guild (or some other building) is already present.. In this shot, a Golem Factory (which produces Gold Golems) isn't buildable because of the mage guild.. Forces some strategic decision making.

Here's something interesting.. A hero stumbled upon a chest, and it was decided that the chest had gold in it. So the hero didn't get the regular option of taking the gold or the experience -- the experience wasn't an available option. Instead he had to choose between keeping the gold or donating it.. I'm not sure what happens when you donate the gold..

You can choose the jender and the picture, but not the skill.

That's the choise of the dwellings you're talking about - Mage and Golem are the same level, above 1st, so you have to choose which one to build.

It's the same as it was. If you'll read what they write you when picking treasure chest in HOMM 3 you'll see it's the same.
These screenshots are very intreresting. A lot of new info... like the spells and the skills info.

It didn't list how much XP you would have got if you donated it..
And the thing with the Mage Guild, I guess it's a bit confusing.. There's Mage Guild and Mage Tower, one of them gives spells the other trains archmages.. I mistook the Mage Guild for the upgradeable building that teaches spells.. My bad.

About donating the Gold... We can't be sure you will get XP in exchange for the gold.
The benefit of donating the Gold could be random, perhaps offering you a Potion, Artifact, Spell or XP. And if you're unlucky perhaps you'll just get a Morale boost for next combat or just replenish 10 Mana points.
A second possibility is that the XP you gain is no longer directed connected to the amount you donated. So you could get 500 XP for donating 2000 Gold, or 1500 XP for donating 1000 Gold.

maybe you bribe the local peasants to do some spying for you?
it's successive screenshots of a beta game, i guess. so, if you look carefully what happens on those screensots after the hero found the chest, and possibly didn't give the local peasantry anything.. the local peasantry attacked. it's one of the most scary screenshots i have seen about homm4, terrible angered peasants attacking with pitchforks and tridents.. so if you don't want the same thing to happen to you, let the local peasants get their rightful share of the gold.

I hope that's not the case.. Then it would be a gamble if you take the XP. Since it might be a good deal or a bad deal, they seem to be encouraging you to take the gold since you at least always know what amount it is. If they were going to randomize the XP, I think they would randomize the gold as well.. I just don't think they would do it the way you're guessing. Come to think of it, now I *really* wanna know what happens when you donate the gold..

There are two ideas I have:
1. When you donate the gold, you get experience. Now, in previous Hereos games, it told you how much experience you got. Now, though, it doesn't; you get a random number between 500 and 2000(or something like that). So, it's sort of a gamble now...take 2000 gold, or get XP, which is more valuable in Heroes IV because of the new class specialization, but if you choose XP, there's the chance that you only get 500, when you could have had 2000 gold.
2. Or, they may have not programmed the XP number in yet.
The mage tower thing means that you can't build a Golem factory if the Mage Tower which produces Mages is already built. I think you mixed that up with the Mage Guild(now called the Institute of Magic, probably for clarity).

"I hope that's not the case.. Then it would be a gamble if you take the XP."
Sure but opening the chest was also a gamble...
There is another reason not to write out what happens if you donate the gold. The army that picks up the chest can consist of only creatures, one hero or multiple heroes. Therefore, the dialogue box cannot write out an XP value to gain, and do note that in the case of a army with only creatures the option of gaining Xp is meaningless.
It's btw an intriguing idea to let the peasantry attack if you don't donate the gold. If the army picking up the gold was a single halfling the peasants would almost certainly win the combat...
Btw... peasants seem to have been improved. Appears that they probably have 10 HP each, which would be more than a Halfling.
Keep the 2000 Gold and gain 120 XP... Sounds good to me. (And if I'm necro I could recruit some Skeletons too.)

If the amount of xp you get is random, it wouldn't be all that bad. It would mostly mean if the chest gave 2000 gold you'd almost always take the gold, and if it gave 1000 gold you'd almost always take the xps (since you might still get 1500 xps form it). And if you need one more then the other you'd probably still take the one you need.

could be another possible answer to the riddle. you donate the gold to peasants who upgrade one level and get some health points, and when you kill them you will get more exp than from unupgraded peasants.
