I love tower music, it's so epic. Part of the greatness of it is the backdrop. The icy backdrop goes well with the type of music played.

I agree with you, Napman. The Tower theme is really epic and has that mysterious vibe into it that seem to be present in the characters of most, if not all, Wizards, although it's nowhere near as epic as the Rampart theme, and that nature background you get while listening to it's just icing on top of the cake.

Town music? some of the campaign musics and terrain musics surpass those of the town ones, but nevertheless, some town ones are particularly good =)
1) Tower - I absolutely cannot get over the violins' legatissimo in their appregios in this piece, and the cellos add that last touch of balance with some well placed staccatos... mmmmm
2) Fortress - Exceedingly captivating piece of music in which how the transition between piano/forte is so sudden. The imagery of monsters lurking beneath swamps waiting to strike out and then sink beneath the depths is really well characterised through the slow flute (?) music transforming into a full blown orchestra without warning, but yet in a smooth manner. I like this piece nearly as much as tower!
3) Necropolis - Personally, the gong always evokes an image of spirits of dead being called, and that violin is ready to send chills down your spine. What stands out most, however, is the harpsichord at the end, it's so melancholic! Reminiscent of a person playing in memory of their lost loved one.
4) Rampart - The harp brings a touch of serenity which resonates well with the atmosphere of this town, 'nature'.
5) Stronghold - Very mighty piece of music, although I feel that the HoMMIII main screen music might have done well with this town also.
6) Castle - also fits well with town, the opening is very enlightening, makes you want to slowly raise your head and look up towards the heavens
7/8) Dungeon/Inferno - still good music, just not my most liked pieces =) Inferno seems to be played in FFF, FF, and F nearly all throughout... and dungeon almost the opposite.
Listen to campaign music! Some of them are just amazing, e.g BladePFCampaign ^^

Wow, it looks like you have your share of music expertise. I liked the way how you can tell which instrument is playing on which theme, if you'd ask me, I think it's rocket science. I agree with all your points (especially on the Tower and Rampart themes), except, I may like the Inferno theme a whole lot more than you do, it's actually my favorite theme.

It's good to take note that you can actually switch up the themes in the Game's Mp3 Folder so that the Stronghold's theme plays whenever you're in a Castle town (and maybe vice versa) or whatever tickles your fancy by just altering the data names. Just a friendly reminder.

H3 is the game where most towns have good/great music.
In order of preference:
1) Fortress - the quiet atmosphere presented in the beginning, changing into that more adventurous/dangerous part is touches me;
2) Stornghold - it conveys a feeling of might, combat, sometimes even anger. At times, I prefer this one;
3) Undead - dark and terrifying, suits necro perfectly, and the end is simply magnificent!
4) Rampart - beautiful, peaceful... perfect for a society secluded in far away woods/alps.
5) Conflux is somewhat odd, but has some dark underlying theme as it develops... Like something powerful that beauty hides.
6) Inferno - excellent beginning, but that is it... it gets boring.
7) Dungeon - towards the end it trasnmits a feeling of something wrong, or forgotten, which suits well underground forces... yet it is pretty boring too.
8) Castle - this town never had a decent music (contrary to barbarians, which in all 3 were awesome). This one motivated me into finding new music for some of H3 features.
The terrain music is also great (mainly Dirt, oh God!).
H series always struck me as paying great attention to music as a critical component not only in gaming, but in life. And they've done an amazing job
EDIT: Tower music sounds good to me, but not too special (I'd place it before Inferno or Conflux, thats all). If I am not mistaken, there are some underlyings of mid-eastern music/passages in that song, which I found interesting (never heard much of this style).

The Castle Theme for the HMMII expansion, PoL, sounded pretty nice. It's kind of royal and majestic with a heroic and noble aura/vibe to it, definitely something fitting for Heroes from the Castle alignment.
Luckily, this theme is still included in HIII. If I'm not mistaken, you can hear when it you're on the Score/Results Screen after a Map/Campaign has been completed.
... or rather, a "remixed" version of it.

Yes,I think it's my favourite HoMM theme of them all.I was playing with the Knights in H2 just to listen to it.Which reminds me,Heroes II had some very good music tracks as well.

Nope, for me, Heroes II pretty much had some average to mediocre tracks, it was the PoL extension that completely blew me away. I especially loved the new Sorceress theme (MIDI) and Wizard theme. I actually replaced the Rampart theme in HIII with the Wizard theme and oftentimes, I find myself doing the same (replacing music) to the other HIII towns, just to break the monotony of things.
I'm listening to the Wizard theme now over at Youtube, it's just so serene and peaceful with a hint of mystery and drama at the same time. It's such a moving theme!

Heroes I music is generally good, too. It's simpler and a lot bolder and has far less dramatic twists and vibes and fancy tunes, in my opinion. I think the themes in Heroes I are solid, straight-forward and hard.
However, the alternate Sorceress theme (the Arabian, desert-like theme) found in Heroes II: PoL is immensely horrible.

I had completely forgotten this one... I guess that Necro theme and the Barbarian were so awesome to me, that I could not even remember this beautiful track.
