Good luck in the harsh world of Heroes of Might and Magic modding. You'll need it

Oh, Limes were enough, of cause. So i am guilty in what Garret D Razor draw? Or in creatures i took from creature vaults?
And it says man, whose mod practically entirely consists from 3DO graphics taken without permissions

It was preventive attack:-)

Did you succeded in contacting Maestro?

PS I made myself Drow town with Maestro creatures and creatures from other places already. But my works don't liked here, so i will not post it or any screenshots.
First 3 levels are Maestro's, that go spiders, then dark elf priests, spider matriarch and Horrors.

You are guilty because you are not able to differentiate what fits in the game nicely and what looks like crap there. So good luck

As for The Succession Wars Mod, I don't even steal anything, I revive the legacy of the prequel of the same game, to which the mod is dedicated. (not even mentioning that 3DO is a publisher, not developer loool)

Stop being a bad troll, you lose my esteem

As for the Drow concepts, Maestro sent me some.

And even this lol:

So now you are some cultorologist and stylist?
I still need answer about sizes of Lords of magic units.
If they not fit to other Homm units, it's decided easily - HMM3 units just turned out, and only lords of magic units are used.

They are almost similar to H3 units in size, but still they need a proper color solution (implemented by changing the battlefield background to a more suitable one, at least). Not telling that they are shown in isometry.

I just see what's wrong in the picture, that's my some kind of specialty in pixel art as well. Simply ripping the sprites without checking if they ever fit is not the proper solution for a high-quality work.

Unfortunately, not so many new units created by fans for HMMIII really fit to the game.

@ orzie: cool concepts. i particularly like the first spider and the goth chick. i always wondered if someone was going to finish that 2nd spider, it looks like maestro was working on it.

@ macron: yes, i did hear back from maestro. he is currently trying to find the files i contacted him about.

Yeah, Maestro is really skilled in making goth chicks. And other chicks too, hehe.

So, I hope when MM8,5 will be out everyone will see it. For now, only the content on sites which I uploaded can show.

I'm actually terrified with the fact that nowadays anyone can claim that they "made Drow town" or "made Forge town" even though they actually made no effort whatsoever. What's even worse is that it's not only Macron's lack of skills and some kind of "inferiority complex" or whatever - on AC we have similar problems with some users. Good thing there are people who criticize that though.

BTW, if someone mentioned it - as one of the authors, I want to apologise everyone for low quality of Grove town. We know it sucks, but we were young and stupid. Now I know the only good thing about this town was that there was nothing else by that time.

I wouldn't say it completely sucks, if we are talking about this one.

Actually its buildings are not very very bad, they don't fit exactly, but the color solution is almost there.

I can also see the spider sorceress which is somehow related to this thread, lol.

@Hobbit: But modding can't start with AAA quality work. While I didn't like Grove town much, I always thought it was a step in the right direction, and an incentive for other people to create new towns (but with quality, not like in the way Macron does!).

You have the opportunity to show a better work with the (polish) Forge town, right?

Lol.
Don't want - don't eat. Nothing else.
It's not your problem with users, it's problem with you.
You are not only working on your mods, you try to dictate what to do others. It's not a critisizm or proposal what to correct. It's total denial. I think there was something that broke you in life.
Or it's pure jealousy. You worked hard to study 3d etc, and in result some beginning modders release more, than you released in whole life.
And people play in it, not wait for some future towns maybe released by some great professionals somewhere in time. I also don't want to wait. As my DF2 forum participation showed then 99% "projects" there ended with fiasco.

I don't understand why you are sorry for Grove. It's a good town, and it's not only your work. If you are sorry for your work, why you work on modding at all? There are some people who critisize "your" Forge. You will be sorry for Forge later? It's some complex of guilt, like you deny the fact, that there nothing ideal in real world.

Nevermind, i just waste time trying to translate your my point of view.

If you don't like works of some AC users and try to obstruct them, can you welcome them to contact me through PM here or give them my email?
We then will not bother your high taste with our low quality snows. Maybe we'll exchange something between us only.

I second it. I'm still truly ashamed that I was so stupid to make such an atrocity. I wonder how hard will I have to work to correct my past mistakes.

Orzie said:

It does suck. Town screen can be acceptable, yes, but units are snow from several years back. Not even talking about plot for this, that would be too much.
It's like putting 3 years old kid's drawings in serious art gallery.

Macron1 said:

We're not sorry for work, we're sorry for mistakes we've made. As authors we can say whether we're displeased with our old works, yes?

Macron1 said:

And we're not blind to the criticism, we know that listening to what others have to say we can improve our work and ourselves. Even if fans didn't point out some faux pas, team would realize them sooner or later and try to correct them the best we can. If not, then you'd have a snowy "forge" with mix of part-this-part-that-of-original-creatures units, rips from other games, some poorly made models and a beholder in flying saucers. And it all having more in common with Warhammer 40000 than H3. If you'd be satisfied with this, then god save the queen Catherine...

Macron1 said:
You will be sorry for Forge later?

Who knows? I can't rule it out for sure. There is a great difference though. Grove was just an experiment. Not only the first serious mod I worked on. It was the first mod I have ever worked on at all, as far as my memory serves me well. I had no skills, no knowledge, no intuition I have now. While Grove was more like pracice and gaining experience for me, in Forge I can employ methods and schematics I believe are much closer to how H3 was made.

Macron1 said:
Grove. It's a good town, and it's not only your work.
We're aware of that. We were young and stupid, as Hobbit said. We've made some unfortunate decisions, like using found assets without even realizing that we should contact ask their authors for permission. Not only that. For a long time at least our team leader and I weren't aware that this whole town originates from Warcraft. As far as I'm concerned, that town even led to some sort of feud.

Storm-Giant said:
But modding can't start with AAA quality work.
Grove is a shameless example of that. But when you are modding, you need to realize some things. Works get better over time and criticism helps you to catch what needs correction. If you don't recive any critique and you have not even a tiny bit of self criticism, you keep creating poorly made mods because you don't have any impulse, urge or pressure to get better at what you're doing.

Storm-Giant said:

Maybe it was some impulse, showing people that making a town is not impossible. But in retrospective I'm not sure if it was worth it. HotA would prove the same thing anyway, in more professional manner.

Storm-Giant said:

This is what I'm hoping for.

EDIT

Macron1 said:
I done them for myself and i am playing them by myself.

So if you've made them for yourself and you are aware that only you'd enjoy playing them, why are you bothering to tell everyone else, on a public forum (which is a place of discussion and critic) about this?

Macron1 said:

Let's say you're digging up coal. And I'm mining diamonds. You can make much more coal in few days than I can find diamonds in few years. But somehow I fail to see where am I supposed to be jealous.

Macron1 said:

And they play it few days and they abandon it because they sated their curiosity or just leave them be.
I wonder which is worse. Be disappointed because thing I wanted wasn't released (as soon as I wanted) or be disappointed because this thing turned out to be a piece of snow?

Because i was said my work is useless. I said that if only i am playing in it, than it's not useless. Because work with results cannot be useless by definition.
What's more, when i posted some work-in progress screens, i was attacked by my haters, so i no longer post screenshots. It's what people here wished. So not I to blame for not sharing work (than not yet done 100%).
