Five Families (IC)

flavor

20th March 1925 Long Island Beach. The New York estate of Stefano Badami, Don of the DeCavalcante family in New Jersey. The heads of the five families are gathered to discuss their involvement in illegal bootlegging. Charles Luciano, Joseph Bonanno, Salvatore D'Aquila of Gambino, Joe Profaci of Colombo and Gaetano Reina of Lucchese. The tension between these five family Dons is extremely high. Past grudges, bad blood and bitternes from the last war has left them with wounds not easily healed Nevertheless ended the meeting peacefully and with everyone in agreement. When all of a sudden just as they were leaving, a bomb goes off and a car explodes near the front gate. Several men are killed and wounded, amongst them the Consiglieris to the Lucchese and Gambino families. Suspicion emmidietly falls upon the other families and everyone tries to put the blame on the others. Tension rises when finally the enraged Dons of the Lucchese and gambino families leaves swearing revenge, triggering what could be the start of a new war.

Suddenly several lights are seen in the distance coming towards them. Fast, too fast! A group of cars racing forward before splitting up into two groups. Gunshots are fired as the cars pass by the trucks on both sides. The convoy stops and several men jumps off only to be shot down. Molotovs are thrown from the cars setting the trucks on fire.

25th March 10:00 a.m. Mott st. Little Italy, Manhatten. Salvatore Giovanni sits at a cafè eating breakfast while reading the newspaper. The warehouse fire and slaughter is the main news. There's quite a ruckus around him too. Between 20 to 30 mafiosos are gathered and it seems that tonights assaults in New Jersey and New York city is a hot topic. Salvatore sighs. "really now what could the Caporegime be thinking. Assembling all these Associates and Soldatos in one place. It's like asking to be hit", he grumbles to himself while studying the men around him. Most of the are young guns, barely over 25.
-Hey Sal. How's it going? A bearded man sits down on the other side of the table. Heard about what happened in Hell's Kitchen? Terrible bisnuess.
-Good morning Ton. Yeah i heard. 7 men shot down with at least two houndred bullets. what a mess. Sal put away the newspaper and looked straight at the other man. How about you then, you ok? You look tired.
-I'm fine thank you. Just been a long night. Ton takes fort a lighter and a pack of sigarretes. Want some? No, fine then. Been awake all night trying to clean up the mess in New Jersey. Man I'm beat. By the way, do you know what this is all about? He gestured around the room.
-No don't have a clue. Sal sighs again. Just know this is ridiculous. Gathering all this force at on time and place. If a bomb goes off now Little Italy will be almost defenseless. He laughed bitterly.
-I see what you mean. Ton nodded and smiled sarcasticaly. Here comes the boss. Looks like we'll finally get our answers.

Vechiaslav was sitting in his cab, and smoked a cigarette. For him, the day was boring and dull. Newspapers were writing about the chaos in the city. Still, it couldn't reach the wave of chaos that walked through his homeland. Being a son of a wealthy landlord had put him in danger of being killed by the bolshevic supporters. Barely he fled from his pursuers, to Italy, homeland of his mother, who had died when he was young. From there, with other fear driven people, he fled to America, "the land of unlimited opportunities" as they called it. When arrived Slava faced the cold reality. He got a job as a taxi driver, which was, infact the best he could get at the time.
Suddenly, two men in trenchcoats ran away from a nearby building, shooting at something. The duo sat in Slava's car. The people chasing them sat into a nearby vehicle.
- Quickly man, lose them!- one of them shouted to Slava. They didn't needed to tell him twice.

25th March, 10:12 AM, Wild Bill's Gunshop, Staten Island.
Harrold Godwin was tapping his fingers impatiently on the counter of the shop. It was never a good thing to Have to come to "Wild" Bill Hanson's shop, it always ment that something was wrong either with business or one of his many firearms. However Harrold usually had little choice, as Hanson was the only one in an 80 mile radius who could effectively repair German guns, of which Harrold owned many. Finally Bill came back.
"Have you fixed it ?," Harrold asked while Bill put the Luger on the counter.
"I have," Bill replied in his typical southern accent, "ya had a bum-bullet stuck in the barrel. 'Twas a real job to get it out."
"I'm just glad you fixed it, I don't like to have to carry a revolver around." Harrold put the Colt Revolver on the counter. "Still, thanks for the loaner," Harrold said while he put the Luger in his duster's holster. "How are my pocketgun and rifle coming along ?"
"I'm still waitin' for the parts of the Dreyse, and you done busted the stock of your Mauser. So those are gonna take a few more days now." Harrold shivered slightly at the way Bill pronounced the names. "That'll be 75 bucks, Harry."
"I'll detract that from your debt," Harrold replied,"which still leaves you $750." Harrold liked having Bill in debt and Bill's gambling ment that he stayed in debt.
"Ya know I'm good for it, Harry."
"You just keep fixing my guns and getting me my ammo and we'll talk about it later."
Harrold turned and left buttoning up his duster, he had a meeting to go to. And with these people you do not want to be late.

-Listen up gentlemen! the Capo's loud voice echoed through the room catching everyone's attention. As you probably heard there was quite the commotion last night. A hit in Hell's Kitchen, an attack in New Jersey, and all over New York City there's been several similar incidents. He paused just to take a look at the men's faces. I've been attending a meeting with Don Luciano, the Consigliere, the Sotto Capo and the rest of the Caporegimes and we think this is the threats from either Don Gambino or Don Lucchese or maybe even both, put into action.

This definetly caused a lot of disturbance amongst the men. Small talks and whispers over who and why spread quickly through the room. Sal swallowed there he sat and used a handkerchief to clean off the sweat in his face. Over the table Ton looked pale and choked a curse. This was bad really bad. Worst case senario, a new mafia war. Nobody wanted that, not after the Castellammarese war. Best case senario, one of the families was trying to drive out the other four and would ultimately be destroyed. Both cases meant a lot of blood was gonna be shed.

-Thats way. The Cap continued. We have decided to prepare ourselves for the worst. In other words, rearmament! Every man will be given two handguns that will carry at all times. Also later on you will be give Luparas and Tommy Guns as soon as they arrive. Martial Law has been declared. Meaning that from now on it is forbidden to walk around alone. You will be walking in either pairs or larger groups. You will also be supplied with apartments which you will share with 5 other people. Movements during the night after 3:00 a.m. are forbidden , unless you're told otherwise. No one is allowed to take action on their own! Absolutely no one, Capiche?! Good. Now come and collect your weapons and apartment adressess and begone.

The meeting took place in a small Irish pub, "The Shamrock" it was unimaginatively named. It was one of Harrold's favorite bars and he frequently conducted business there. The owner, Mike Mulrooney, knew enough of Harrold to know not to ask any questions when he was with people and usually kept a booth in the back of the pub free just for these occasions. Harrold and Mike were on good terms and got along well. As with many bars, pubs and taverns, the Shamrock was offically dry. But regulars knew Mike had alcohol and would serve it for the right price and with discretion. Most of it was homebrewed stout, but he had a small supply of Irish whiskey. Most of which he got through Harrold.
When Harrold sat down in his regular booth, Mike aproached him.
"Can I get ye anythin, lad. Your regular?" Mike asked.
"Mike, it's still morning, just coffee. Besides I'm expecting some people in a couple of minutes," Harrold replied slightly annoyed.
"How'd ye like yer coffee?" Mike inquired as he put an ashtray on the table.
"Strong and black, no sugar or cream this time. Also to them you're a legal bar, so no sidebusiness."
"I'll tell the bookie to shut his trap then."
"You do that."
Harrold lit a cigar and waited for Mike to return with his coffee. He unbuttoned his duster, making sure his Luger and snubnose loaner weren't visible. He had made sure that both were loaded and ready to fire at notice. But he would prefer not to use them, it was usually bad for business. Taking a puff from his cigar and taking of his slouch hat, Harrold relaxed a little, it was never good to appear nervous to mobsters. He was about to meet with one of the Capo's of the Gambino family. He wasn't sure anymore what his name was and with the hostilities of late, it could be that somebody else would meet with him anyway.
Mike returned with the coffee.
"Who are ye meetin, Harry?"
"Keep out of this, Mike. Just serve the drinks and don't speak unless spoken to. I'd hate to see my favorite pub get in to something it can't handle."
Mike left. The minute he had returned to the counter, two men in suits walked in.
Showtime.

Paradise Hotel Little Italy

The air was heavy and silence filled the room. Around a table 3 men played a game of poker while another layed lazy on the couch. Ton stood by the window and looked down on the street. Sal sat beside him on a chair cleaning the two Colts he had been given.
The situation was tense and the 4 other men was seemingly nervous. Sal didn't blame them. After all they were just kids barely in their 20's. They hadn't any real experience and all of a sudden an upcoming war was brewing. Sal didn't like it either, but a man got to do what a man got to do. If they were ordered to kill then they just had to obliege.
-Say Sal?Ton asked quetly while turning away form the window. Want to go for a walk, to get some fresh air?. The air in here are allready used up and I need a drink and a smoke. Sal just nodded and stood up and placing the Colts around the waist, before heading towards the door with Ton right behind him.
-We're going out for a bit. You youngsters keep the fort and try not to smash it Ok?! Sal said jokingly and Ton and the others just smiled at th remark. We'll be back in around 30minutes, well see you later.

Luigi's Ristorante was a small and quiet place. A family resturant where everybody minded their own business and nobody asked unnecessary questions. Sal and Ton sat in a corner booth placed in the back. There they enjoyed Lasagne, salad, white bread and red vine from Sicily.
While they dined the talked about the recent events but also past events. Sal and Ton or Tony Morrinelli as his full name was, had known each other since Sal emmigrated from Italy. He was the age as Sal and about 1.70/1.80 tall and weight roughly 60/70 Kg. Tall and muscular with a beard just around his mouth and lips. Like with Sal he had joined up with Luciano five years before the last war ended and was now a trusted associate of the Genovese family.
Just as they had finished their meal and was about to order some apple cake and coffe another man entered the resturant and approached their table. A man they knew all to well and who never brought anything but troubles with him. A soldato named Roca Castella.
-Sal, Ton. Get up we got orders! Let's go pick up your roomates and get going. Both Sal and Ton sighed as the stood up and followed Roca outside to two waiting cars.

The Shamrock (Irish Pub)

The Suits made their way to the counter. Harrold could not recognise them from this distance. Mike was visibly nervous and seemed to recognise them. After a very brief conversation, he pointed the Suits to Harrold's booth. As they came towards him, Harrold recognised one of the two. He was Giuseppe D'Aquila, better know as "Silent Joey", a cousin of Salvatore D'Aquila. He wasn't the man he was supposed to meet, but Harrold was not about to make a big point of that. Rubbing these men the wrong way was a very bad idea. The other man Harrold did not recognise, but judging by his stature and rather absent look, he was probably just one of Joey's goons who was brought along for protection. Joey sat down in Harrold booth, the goon didn't and stood a bit away, making sure they weren't bothered.
"Mr Godwin, I s'pose you weren't expecting me. I'm sorry, but we've made a little change in plans," Joey began.
"I don't mind, these things happen." Harrold replied.
"I'm sure you've heard about the things that happend last day. Suffice it to say we aint done it and further we aint happy bout it. But for the moment it doesn't concern you, I'm here to make you an offer."
"I'm listening"
"How do you think about that incident in Hell's Kitchen?" Joey asked.
"I thought that that were men of the Genovese Family," Harrold replied, more than a little surprised.
"They are, but I'm talking about style here."
"Hmm, it gets the job done. But if you ask me it's a waste. Why used 200 bullets to kill 7 guys, when 7 will do the job just as wel."
"I was hoping you'd say that. Now here is the deal, we want you to do a hit on this guy. He aint of any of the 5 families, but he's been a thorn in our side for a while now."
"Who is it, when and how do you want it done?" Harrold asked.
"First of all, I want no guns, they are to loud for this job. I want his wife to wake up next to him with his throat slit. I know that to do this quiet like, you're gonna need some time. So if you're gonna do this, Barry here will come to your warehouse tomorrow with the info on this guy, when he leaves you got exactly 5 days to do this."
Harrold mulled about it for a while and finally asked:"Suppose I do this, how will this benefit me?"
"You're a resourcefull guy, if you do this for us we're gonna let you in on some of our business. First of all, you're gonna enjoy the protection of the Gambino family and you're warehouse will be guarded by our men. Second you'll be free to run your business as you're doing now, with us taking a small cut. Third we may ask you to go collect some things for us, but you get to keep an equall cut from that. Lastly, you get to ask us for things. Anything you can think of, we can talk about it."
This sounded to good to be true and it probably was. The only thing was that he would be watched by the Gambino all the time and if he would become trouble to them; they could have him taken care of. But it would be a good opertunity to expand his practices.
"Have Barry be there at 9:30 am," Harrold finally replied.
"You're a smart man, Harry. You aint gonna regret this. But know that if you mess this up, we'll know were to find you." Joey said and he got up from the booth. Harrold knew this well, but he was confident in his abilities.
"Don't worry, I won't mess this up. I've done this kind of thing before."
Joey and his goon left, without paying much atention to anyone in the pub. When they were gone for a bit, Mike returned to Harrold.
"I hope ye know what ye're gettin yerself into lad," Mike said.
"Don't you worry about that, rather get me some Ham and Eggs, I've worked up an apitite." Harrold replied. Mike left again and Harrold dug his pocketwatch out his pocket. '12:00, not a bad morning's worth' he thought to himself.

-All right listen up! Roca said while stood outside the apartments. Word has it that Guiseppe D'Aquila the cousin to Salvatore D'Aquila is going to attend a meeting with some bloke at some irish pub 12:am. Therefore we're going there to check it out and if it is correct we'll storem the place and smack him up real good. Now go get your bodies and let's get going.
Sal and Ton went up and explained the job to their roomates, who soon after came down with them and walked into the cars. Immidietly the cars rolled towards Staten Iland. Inside Roca and his drivers supplied Sal and the others with lupras and tommy guns. While giving exact instructions on how this was gonna be done.
-Remember, don't fire untill I tell you to! Roca explained. I'll tell you to fire when I'm sure Guiseppe is there. And don't shoot any civillians! That's bad bisuness. And those tommy guns, leave them in the cars when your done.

Staten Island, the Shamrock 11:45 am.

Roca, Sal and Ton in a booth inside the Shamrock watching the frontdoor with luparas under the table. The four youngsters stood outside in the backstreet watching the backdoor. Exactly 11:05 a car stopped outside and two men in suits got out and entered the pub and walked to a booth in the back, while the car drove on.
Roca nodded and and Sal and Ton readiedthemselves. Guiseppe talked to a man allready waiting in the booth. Some kind of Cowboy by the looks of it. As Guiseppe and his Henchman walked outside five minutes Roca called for the bill while both Sal and Ton stood up and walked towards the door.
Flavor
As agreed earlier the driver would signal the other group when Guiseppe entered and left from the other exit that they were guarding.
As they got the signal the four young men rushed from both corners of the pub trying to surround Guiseppe, while Sal and Ton took forth their weapons and accompanied by Roca started firing through the windows.

Slava pushed his Ford A to the limit, as it seemed that the engine will fall apart. The two men were shooting back at the car who chased them. So far the results were pathetic.
- Hold on now!- Slava quickly turned, and evaded a passing truck. The latter's driver stopped, making the chaser's car crash right into the truck.
- Are you insane?- Asked one of Slavas passengers.
- I evaded them haven't I? Where to?
- Little italy, Mott street.

When Harrold was looking at his watch, he heard gunshots. As he looked up he saw several men firing out the windows. One chubby guy in a suit, one taller fellow with a beard and one heavily muscled guy. They had the feeling of gangsters about them. Mike was cowering under Harrold's table.
'Great, just my luck. The guy I meet gets offed when he walks away and you'll see they'll blame me for it.' Harrold thought. Looking at Mike again, Harrold remembered the brawls that occur here often, as most Irish pubs. In a brawl Mike could stand his own, but when a gun was pulled he's a complete chicken. Instinctively his hand had gone to his Luger, but when Harrold noticed he quickly pulled his hand back. By the look of it there were several more outside, so shooting his way out wasn't an option. No, the only way out this situation was to play it cool. Harrold felt that his pulse was up a bit, so he swallowed the last of his coffee, which was cold by now, and lit a new cigar. Lightly kicking Mike, Harrold whispered: "As far as you know, my name is Albert." Mike nodded. Coughing a bit, he fixed to use a German accent and pulled his German ID from the lining of his duster.
Albert Brünwald was one of his aliases, but he had not used it much since the end of the Great War, then again he did not have much business with Germans since then. But this could get badly and if these people knew he was working under the name of Harrold Godwin, it might scrutinise everything he was currently working on.
Looking closer, he still could not recognise the chubby an the tall guys, but the other guy was somewhat familiar. His name was Rocko, or something of the like, and Harrold knew that he was one of the Genovese men. Usually he was used in hits like this, messy ones.
Suddenly there was the screeching of tires and then several more. This was turning into a car chase by the sound of it.
Rocko was swearing loudly and barking orders to the men outside. Things did not work out for them verry well, by the looks of it. Then he turns to the other two. The chubby one was visibly shaken and he was sweating heavily. The tall fellow, didn't look so shaken, but everything about them told Harrold that they did not like this much. Rocko left and two others were heading Harrold's way. Mike was making was way from under the table and rushed into the kitchen.
The two guys were at Harrold's booth and the tall fellow started.
"Would you come with us please?" he asked surprisingly smooth, "We need to talk with you about the man you just met."
"I'm sorry, but I have just order a light lunch. Would ze Herren like to join me, so we can talk here. I know ze owner, so I can get him to make you something to eat as wel." To his surprise he was mixing a Hessian with a Prussian accent, but the two men did not look they noticed anything about.
The tall fellow looked like he wasn't game, but the chubby one was already sitting down and gestureed for the menu.
"What would ze Herren like to talk about?"

-We'd like to know about the man you just met. Ton said firmly while looking quite iritated at Sal who read the menu. His name was Guiseppe D'Aquila. His relative Salvatore is an important figure in the Gambinos. We would like to know what the two of you discussed. Dpendeing on the answer, we might need take precautionary measures! He said while loading his two-barreled shotgun and under the table Sal pushed a similar shotgun towards the stranger's stomach.
-Nothing personal mac. Sal Explained. It's just bisuness. I would like some an omelett with bacon and cheese and a cup of coffe! He shouted towards the frightened man in the kitchen. How about you Ton?
-Just some coffe, Sal. Make it a whole pot mister! Ton said while sitting down beside Sal. So how about it, stranger? Care to tell us what bisuness you had with Guiseppe and the Gambinos?! First let's start with your name!

Outside Roca and the rest was busy chasing Guiseppe through the streets of Staten Island. During the whole thing a mad as hell Roca swore and cursed while to give Guiseppe a lot of bullet holes with a tommygun. Wans't exactly the easiest thing to pull off, especially during a car chase but he didn't give a damn. Nor did he care that this high speed car chase with a lot of shooting propably drew a lot of unwanted attention. He was enraged over the fact the Guiseppe got away, and when he was enraged he was both dangerous and deadly!

"My name, meine Herren, is Albert Brünwald. And please put zose guns away, zere is no need for zose zings." Harrold told Ton and Sal, as they called eachother.
Mike came along with a pot of coffee and two more cups. Nervous and shaky he put them down on the table. With a small voice he told that the eggs and the omelet would take five more minutes.
"As far as our conversation went, he did not tell me who he was. He required for my services, but we could not reach an agreement yet. He told me he would contact me later, but I zink that will not happen soon. If your friend gets his hand on him, I zink he will not contact me at all for zat matter."
"You will have to more specific than that Al, nothing personal" Sal said. They still had the guns pointed at Harrold stomach.
They were clearly trying to intimidate Harrold, but they had to do more than point a gun at him to do it.
Taking a long draw of his cigar, Harrold continued."I would razer have you call me Albert, I do not like ze name Al. However I will wait until we have our lunch, I do not like to be disturbed."
Ton was visibly getting more iritated, likely because his intimidation wasn't working and because his friend wasn't improving the situation much by shouting to the kitchen again to hurry up. A little while later, a still nervous Mike came out of the kitchen with two steaming plates and put them on the table.
"Would ye like anything else, gents?" Mike nearly stammered. Ton shook his head and Mike hurried back into the kitchen. Sal put his gun on his lap and dug into his omelet. Harrold also took a few bites from his fyed eggs and started to talk again, though in a softer tone than before.
"Well, meine Herren, I am a former member of ze Preußische Geheimpolizei. I now operate as a hired assasin. Herr Guiseppe, was it? He requested my services, but he would not mention who was ze target. I told him what my price was and he told me he would contact me later. Zat is all we discussed. Is zere anyzing else I can help ze Herren wiz?"
Ton wasn't pleased with the answer one bit, that was clear from the grimace he was making. Sal had gobbeled his omelet down and took his gun in his hands again. Harrold returned to his own meal, but without taking his eyes of the two gents in front of him. Ton whispered something in Sal's ear and stood up from the booth. Ton concealed the gun with his coat and walked to the front of the bar. It was clear that he was looking for the third member of their party. Sal, meanwhile, kept his eyes on Harrold. His meal had calmed him considerably. Harrold had nearly finished his own eggs and reached for his cigar on the ashtray. As soon as Harrold's only bearly moved, Sal's eyes glinted wearily, as if expecting him to reach for a weapon. Harrold could not realy blame him, mobsters like him were either extremely alert or dead.
"Just reaching for my cigar," Harrold said. "Would you like one as wel?" he offered.
Before Sal had a chance to respond to the offer, Ton called him. Sal looked over his shoulder while keeping one eye on Harrold. Ton indicated that Sal should come to him. Ton came to the booth as wel and they met a couple of meters away from Harrold's booth. They started to talked quietly, but kept their eyes on Harrold at all time. Harrold could not hear what they said exactly, but he caught a few bits. "...Rocko's gone..." and "...Care of this ourselves..." told Harrold al he needed to know. The hit had not gone as planned and Ton and Sal had to improvise.

A few minutes earlier

As Guiseppe D'Aquila's car exited a street corner at high speed an incoming truck hit the rear of the car making it spin around before hiting a nearby building. Soon afterwards Roca and his men entered the scene and walked out of their cars, moving slowly towards Guiseppe.  Fortunately for Roca Guiseppe and his companions was both shaken and hazy fro the accident, unfortunately the building they crashed into was a well known bar where the Gambino mobsters frequently hanged iut with each others. And this time it was filled with nearly 50 men who all rushed out guns at the ready to save their capo.
The following shoot out cost Roca's life as well as the life three-four of his own men. The Gambino group on the other hand, as a result of Roca and co was armed with tommyguns while the Gambinos only had handguns, lost 10-20 while 10 more was wounded.

Back at the Shamrock

-Roca's dead! Ton said. Shot down with at least 30 bullets. Several others were also killed on both sides. While Guiseppe that lucky snow pulled through unharmed. He cursed silently while holding his shotgun firmly. So now what?
-For the love of...! Sal burst out before lowering his voice. This is so not good. Not only did we fail the hit but we also lost several men and allerted the Gambinos. When this news reaches the street many of the families will turn on us. Sal spoke calmly but inside he was boiling and swearing sileently. Anyways we got to take care of this man first.
Ton nodded silently and the both walked back to the booth. Their faces hardened and their eyes cold, they both placed a firm grip on their weapons. Raising their guns and holding them still they stopped standing in front of mister "Albert".
-Your friend mister Albert is alive and well. Sal said in a low voice. It seems he got lucky and came upon some friends who helped him. Our guys was not so fortunate. That's bad luck, both for us and for you!  He paused for a minute and took and examined Albert closely with his eyes, trying to find out anything useful.
-Now you don't strike us as the ordinary run of the mill hitman mister albert. Your eyes are too sharp, they observe too much! Ton continued where Sal left off. His tone was cold and convivting, like a judge proclaiming death penalty. I would say your a smart guy who knows his way around with a lot of things in the oven, if you know waht i mean?! Now be a smart guy and tell us the real reason why the two of you met. Sal grinned and Ton smiled dangerously with a wicked look in his eyes. Behind them the survivors approched armed and deadly.

'I was right, they're blaming me for this,' Harrold thought to himself. 'Time to drop the act.' Blowing a thick cloud of tabaccosmoke to the ceiling, Harrold looked to both men with an icy stare. He completly ignored the scraped and battered goons behind them.
"Alright gentlemen, you are right, I am no ordinary 'hitman'," he almost spat the last word. His voice had changed tone and he was now speaking in perfect, albeit accentless, English. "I was not lying, when I said that Guiseppe asked me to assasinate someone. Though that was not the pretense of our meeting. I was supposed to meet another capo of the Gambino, some guy called Duvalli, to talk about setting up a smuggling line."
It appeared that Ton and Sal, who were still pointing their guns at Harrold, were slightly brought of ballance by the change, but they made effort not to show it.
"As I said before, Joey did not tell me who he wanted dead, his goon was supposed to give it to me tomorrow." Harrold's tone became curt. "It was supposed to be silent, not messy like this. Now Joey made a bunch of promisses if I did the hit. Like being included in family-business on freelance basis. I don't believe a lick of it, but I thought I could make myself some money while the getting was good. Now, if you gentlemen would like to talk business, put those peashooters away and sit down. If not, then let me through, I have no quarrel with you, but I also have other things to do."

It was another day, and  the war over the booze had started. Of course the war had to start, it was always like that. It was quite amazing in a way, the demand for hired muscle had increased a bit, but the exiting thing was that the Lucchese finally wanted more blood into the family. Due a quite dubious heritage which was a mess, he still qualified for some odd reason.
Of course, he did not know that someone in the Lucchese had scouted him, he was heading towards a cafe to discuss another thug work.
When he arrived at the small charming Italian cafe, the guy was sitting there impatently and zipping on some black coffee, he then raised his head and signalized for me to take a seat. Sitting there 2 at the table he said: "I was beginning to wonder where you had run of off ya know."
I raised my hands a bit and sat down more comfortably while replying: "Well, its not my fault the cabs these days are slow. The entire shootout of the mafia is not making anything better either."
He took the point and replied: "Well, how would you like to do some dirty work? But before that, I'll tell you something good. How would you like to become another arm of the Lucchese? You seem to have some qualities we need."
"And if I refuse?"
"I have not decided yet, but likely we will be far away from your sight. You will never get this chance again."
"Well, I guess I am in then. Whats the job?"

Slava brought the two men where they asked to. It appeared that their destination was an italian restaurant of some sort. The two men whispered something between them for a while.
- Dalbajobi blet...- Mumbled Slava while looking at a bullet hole in the windshield.
- Did you said something?
- It was nothing. You owe me 8.75 bucks for the ride.
The two men started whispering again. One of them handed him the money.
- You'd better come with us.
Slava shrugged and went out of the car, following the two men to the restaurant.

Whether they were stunned by the sudden shift of his personage, or because they knew it would cause them more trouble to shoot him, or something else it was not clear. Nonetheless, Ton and Sal started to lower their weapons, albeit very reluctantly. Anger and rage still spoke clearly from their eyes. The young flunkies behind them followed and lowered their weapons as wel. Sal gave a short jerk of his head, indicating the Harrold should leave before they changed their minds. Harrold got up from the booth, grinning wide, and made his way to the exit.
As Harrold passed Ton and Sal, he reverted to his German accent and said:"Well, meine Herren, if you ever want to contact me, tell ze owner." With a darker tone of voice he added."Don't bozer to find me, I will find you." The training in Prussia, once more, proved to be worth the 2 years of his life.
Harrold also saw Ton make a hand signal, but it was not familiar to him. Harrold made a short stop at the bar, to tell Mike that he should put everything on his tab and then he left.
Harrold walked out on the streets and noticed the damage the failed hit caused. He chuckeld lightly and whispered a single word:"Amateurs".
Two blocks later, Harrold noticed that he was being followed. It was not one of the people he had seen in the Pub, but Harrold guessed it was either a Gambino or a Genovese flunkie. It did not realy matter, what mattered was that Harrold lost him. First step of losing a shadow was not to let him know you knew of his presence. Second step was to find a large crowd.
Harrold made his way to the subway, which was always crowded during operating hours. Harrold had figured out how to use the subway without charge during his first week in New York and though the price was only a nickel, every penny saved was one earned. Harrold's girlfriend always joked how he frugal he could be. Harrold got onto the train and during his ride he hopped to several completely random stations. After his fifth station, Harrold was sure he lost his follower. He made his way to a taxistand and got into a taxi. After being driven to the harbor, he had the cabbie drop him of in the vicinity of his warehouse. Harrold paid the cabbie the 10$ he owed and walked to his warehouse, making sure he did not take the shortest route.
After he finally came to his warehouse, he made his way to the office area. There he saw the person he hoped he would.
Behind the desk in the main office sat Steve. Stephen Percy wass Harrold's right hand and one of two people in the world Harrold actually trusted. Harrold had met Steve during his hunting years. Both were part of Lord Tufton's Retinue during his hunting expedition in Africa and South-Asia. Ever since then Steve has been Harrold's friend and assisant. There was one very strong reason why Harrold trusted Steve, it was because Steve was Harrold's Blood Brother. Both owed eachother their lives several times over and Steve has never even showed a sign that he would even consider betraying Harrold and vice-versa. Currently Steve was running the legal cover operation of their shipping-business.
When Harrold entered the office, Steve looked up from his paperwork.
"How was your meal?" Steve asked.
"I've cut my gums on a bonesplinter," Harrold replied. Both were talking in code, they usally did when employees could be listening. The code was never formalised, but Steve and Harrold always knew what the other meant.(Translation of the code: Things have gone wrong)
"Really?"
"Uhuh, the cook was fired, I could have chocked."(We need to take precautionary measures)
"How about the butcher that sold the meat?"(What about our sidebusiness?)
"He's looking for a shaper cleaver now."(We need to move the arsenal)
"Butcher still selling meat to the mayor?"(What about the secret stock?)
"No, he's all sold out, he hasn't got a sausage in stock."(We need to move the secret stock as well, but to a different place)

The meeting was over, the conclusion was there. It was the Lucchese next, and there was something to rampage. There was apparently a booze dealer who was independent in the area, he was stacking a hand more in cash. He was going down, with a boom.
The details was written down in a letter, the means to end it was quite open except that the snow was allowed to be killed.
Well, to leave open ends was always bad. The snow would go 9 feet under, from now on nobody was going to poke the Lucchese and get away with it!
The storage was well within the parameters of the Lucchese control, so nobody would care if it even went boom.... So long the booze was still intact.
Armed with a pistol and a knuckleduster in solid steel, it was blood that was going to be spilled.
The guy was apparently at the storage, he was LIVING at the top floor of the building. And it was not a factory of some sort, just a house that had a oversized cellar.
The taxi rider towards the place was long, and it was a chilly night for the season. Walking the few last blocks over to the place was annoying, there was some cloths that was left home sadly. But the man was apparently living by himself, an odd crone who had an polish sounding name.
I checked the addresses, scouted the building to see if there was more than 1 person there, confirmed 1 person and knocked on the door. After all, it was not that late yet.
A clean cut man came out smelling a tad of cigarettes, he matched the description. He started with "Howdy stra..!" but never get far with that, a quick unarmed fist to his head downed him. I went inside, checked the house, closed the door, carried the man to the 2nd floor and tumbled his shaken limbs down it so it would look like an accident. Then taking his pulse to assure he was dead, he was not. So it was down the stairs a second time. I then phoned the mob and told them that the house was ready for plundering, the man in the other end ended the conversation with: "Good job son, you have made the don a happy man once more."

Stephanie looks out the window of the cab at the city passing by. She has been summoned to have tea with Lucille at her Father's house which always made her nervous. Lucille was a wonderful woman who controlled her domain with a fist of iron but there was no getting around the resentment of the servants that their master's snow was welcomed in his home.
Of course they probably realised that she was only welcome thanks to Lucille, Joe had barely spoken to her except to order her around since her mother died nearly 6 years ago. It had shattered her world and dramatically changed her circumstances the night her mother was gunned down outside their home. She had gone from pampered princess to proprieter and madame of one of her fathers nightclub brothels.
She supposed she should be grateful he hadn't taken away everything and forced her to prostitute herself until she was old enough to claim her inheritance.
The cab draws up outisde a luxurious house, she steps out of the cab and leaves the servant that had opened the door for her to pay the driver. Lucille meets her at the top of the stairs and hugs her close.
"Ah pet you look more beautiful every time I see you, just like your mama. Come into the parlour for we have things to discuss, and decisions to make."
She follows Lucille into the overdecorated room and sits with her at a small table set up with tea and cakes. As Lucille pours the tea Stephanie helps herself to a tea cake with pink frosting and nibbles at the edges of it.
"Lucy what on earth is going on that you had to summon me when you only saw me two days ago?"
Lucille adds sugar to her tea and purses her lips.
"Ah pet, you will not like this news, the familia has once again started to fight for supremacy and vengeance with the others. Men have been gunned down already, and we are expecting the fighting to be savage."
Stephanie shakes her head and looks at Lucille in consternation.
"Lucy why must they do this, do they not have enough power in their own areas? Do they not have enough money? Bah I do not understand men."
Lucille laughs.
"My pet what is to understand, they all wish to be the king bull of the cowherd, all of this is just posturing to prove they are the one who should control all the others. But come now, what I meant to talk to you about is what it means for you. Despite your father's behaviour to you he still loves you and will do anything if you are in danger, and you will be my pet. You have a talent for buisness and have turned his least profitable buisness into a gold mine. Not to mention you are his flesh and blood. The other familia may target you to either hurt his buisness, or to hurt his heart."
She pauses as Stephanie takes this in.
"Now pet whether you like this situation or not you have to live with it, your father he has said that he wishes for you to have a bodygaurd but is he willing to offer you one of his men. Bah! He offers boys with no experience, you can shoot and fight better than most of them. They would be dead before they would have a chance to protect you, or you would be protecting them!"
Stephanie nods her head.
"Lucy if it's all the same I would rather not have bodygaurds, at the club we have men enough to keep me safe, and elsewhere I stand a better chance if I do not stand out. A girl with guards is obviously valuable, a girl in cheap clothes by herself is not worth anyones trouble."
Lucille waves a hand at this.
"Yes pet I agree, but your father has said that you must have something. So I think that we shall give you a car and driver. We have a few taxicabs for getting around anonymously so you shall have sole use of one, and a driver of a cab, no one will think of him as a guard. As it happens my sister's nephew has just arrived from Italy, he may not look like much but he can handle himself in a fight."
Stephanie nods her agreement knowing she will not get away with arguing this point with Lucille. She and Lucille chat about generalities for the rest of the afternoon, then Stephanie makes her way to the garage to meet her new driver.
