superhero cities
I am in the process of writing a comic book, or creating a comic book mythos. the basic set up is a about a 6thform college for superheroes in contemporary britian, containing all manner of students, from a boy who simply has smoke coming out of his eyes, to the anti-christ, and they're daily experience of the hatred against superheroes, as well as tackling with all the problems of that age, from pregnancy to relationships, expulsion, sexuality, coursework and so on.
However, that's not what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is the broader Mythos of the world. superheroes in this story are all penned into cities by the government after WW2 in order to keep them under control, which they must spend some money on in order to maintain. What I want to know is that are these city ideas good and would they be possible. I will also put what cities these are based on/ where they will be located in this mythos as well.
Britain- based on liverpool/ manchester- britain’s city of supes is a fairly rundown place to be. Dilapidated, run down, most of the buildings have quick “Fix’em up” jobs done. this is because the supes are not a popular group, and no government wants to give them a particularly large sum of money to maintain, so it's been slowly whittling away at the fund, so as not to be associated with them. Divided up into districts, based on origin and power, with districts like the mother ship (for housing aliens), the Hives (for housing the insect hybrids) and so on. It’s actually not a bad place, there is plenty of community spirit, with all the citizens banding together to sort it all out. The college is a little way out of the city, on the outskirts. The kids who live on the outskirst (the normal ones) often take bets and get on the buses to college, as well as freely beat up the students.
America- based on LA- if britain’s is bad, america’s is much worse. The city is a crime infested hell hole, with the rich living in a hugely wealthy series of estates, whilst gang violence controls the centre (and gang violence only get’s worse when the gang members have laserbeam eyes). So little is put in to the city by the government, that this happens, small amounts of police and schooling, who have slashed funding again and again to fund 'nam, first gulf, balkans and various wars (more popular than superheroes). Some of the more famous groups, who live in these estates with millions, have often been exposed to be involved in illegal activities, like the Z-men (yeah, guess who these guys are based on) actually being a pedophile ring. the only way to go up in this city is either through crime or being sponsored by some of the rich families to be the families servant/token group memmber.
Russia- the Russian city is organised into districts, like britian, only it’s related to work and what they do for a living. The city is famous for handing out to Russian organisations meta-humans as employees to help deal with harsh environments or to fix problems etc etc. The superpowered workforce has helped Russia become an economic giant. However, all the districts are very disconnected, almost no interaction between it. It doesn’t feel like a city, just a series of disconnected towns all together. also, whilst russia has become richer, the city has stayed the same since the 50's when it was built, even in 2009.
China- china’s city seems to be the best out of all of them...seems to. Clean road, everyones employed, everyone lives in nice houses, they have vechiles, it all seems very pleasant. It’s actually run by a tryant superhero group called the four exemplars, the most powerful being star dragon. The group even have a thought police.
