Place in your main H3 folder where map editor is. Run patch, replace one of default sizes with new one. It should allow you to create new maps of that size.
Not sure about editing and RMG though.
Does not work on 64-bit systems
BTW, this is the map you sent last night:
Hi, I tried the instructions you gave, but it won't make any larger maps than it usually does. I copied the file to my main homm3 folder, ran patch selected any of the map sizes in this case 144/144 scrolled all the way down to 9000 clicked the button, closed it. Ran that file that gets created after you close the program, tried map editor but nothing. I am using original homm3 complete and windows xp 32bit. I've also tried other sizes like under 1k, but nothing either.

Ok here is how I did it :
patchmaps.exe targets H3wmaped.exe NOT h3maped.exe
1. make a two backup copies of H3wmaped.exe & h3maped.exe and put them into a new map
2. place patchmaps in the H3 directory. run it...
for 36/36 -> select 144, press the button
for 72/72 -> select 180, press the button
for 108/108 -> select 216, press the button
for 144/144 -> select 252, press the button
3. now rename H3wmaped.exe to H3wmaped XXL.exe (or whatever ),put aside with the orginal backup mapeditors.
4. rename h3maped.exe to H3wmaped.exe so you can target that aswell
patch the four set the same as above
5. now rename this H3wmaped.exe into h3maped.exe XXL (or whatever ),put aside with the orginal backup mapeditors.
6. move all these into the h3 directory. Voila you now have 2 XXL editors one for SoD-editor one for WOG-editor

Okay you said make two backup copies of h3wmaped.exe, but I haven't even got those files unless I first use the executable patchmaps. What do you mean by put them in a new map?
Edit: Okay, I've tried to follow those instructions as well as possible, but nothing, still creates only max size of 144/144 no matter what I do. Would it be possible for you to send me, the patched map editor through rapidhsare or something for shadow of death, no need for wog.

Yes, it works, you are a genius my friend. Hey by the way can it get any larger than 252? Man I'd love to play a 500+ size map woohoo.

Aaah that's good, but it only works with WOG? Damn! In an rmg template what's the hardest setting you can put for guardian monsters that guard artifacts, resources etc? Right now it's at strong.

What do you mean by that?
Didn't you read the manual or wiki ?
It says it right in your opening post:
'You need to install WoG before running VCMI.'
By the way, if somehow that post is outdated and it is able to run without WOG, how would I go about having the random map generator make bigger than 252 map size?

To make things clear, it needs WoG files, but ignores the game itself. No one forces you to play WoG of course.
As to big maps.. patchmaps.exe should allow you to create up to 9000x map, but I didn't try it really.

Okay that's good news, okay I get it that the patchmaps can create upto 9000x maps but can those kinda maps actually be played? It doesn't even have to be that big, maybe half of that or even less?
Man if that would work that'd be great, all I'd need is brother Fester to help me out haha .

I noticed that the density settings follow map size. So your first wood mine will be now at one week travel. Same for other dwellings.

Hey guys, I know I'm asking for alot here, but have any of you got some rmgs for 252 by 252 by 2 maps. Looking at preferably whole upper and lower ground, and pretty much difficult monsters guarding resources/artifacts etc. I heard alexspl had some on his main site but he closed it down .
Thanks again.

Will not use a fan made "patch" resulted from some weird manipulation. It is not only about creating big maps, but also give to the people playing them a fast and proper install. Rename, move, install, rename again, few people will get the pattern. Now that it works, maybe you release a tested and stable version, if it is not too much to ask?
And map will be started asap

Map = 252 x 252, 8 players
month 1, week 3, day 6
"Runtime Error!
%heroes3path%\h3wog XXL.exe
abnormal program termination"
okclick drops the program
Constant upon ending turn
These seems to popup a little now and then between month 1 to 3.
Saving and loading works so thats a +
Will experiment further. suspect that some scripts might not be compatible with big maps
Will keep u update if i find some way to smooth things out
