I want to reclaim the word "comrade"
There's no reason for it to only have a Communist meaning these days. It should mean something in between "acquaintance" and "friend".

Here we use it with ironical meaning in two ways:
1. When we want to say that some is an old commie, but after 1989 he claim to have nothing with the old regime. Also for someone who's ancestors were commies, and now he is part of the so called "red aristocracy". Rich guys that are rich, because their grandfathers were killers;
2. Ironicaly for someone thats not a friend of you, but he have to do something friendly to you, because have the obligation to, not because he likes to;
So, yes, the regime twisted the true meaning of this good word, that can be used in much better ways...

well actually (at least in Romania) the term which we used during the comunism was "tovaras" while "camarad" was during the rule of the "legionari"

I've played too much Red Alert when I was a kid, I can't say comrade without a russian accent... it's impossible.

It's a cool-sounding word, but honestly, I'll never be able to not think of communism when I use it. Too many movies, too many video games.

in Sweden, atleats for me, it's used as a replace word for friend.
