Recruiting Heroes
We have all seen the new hero selection screenshots... now, we will be able to choose from ten or so Heroes... but something is not quite right... in Heroes 3 (and propably in Heroes 4) you could hire the same two heroes from all your taverns... wouldn't it be more logical, if each tavern had it's own heroes? ...and in case of a fleeing hero, he/she should go to the nearest (allied?) tavern...

This time around, heroes do not flee at all. Remember the prison system? They either die (being able be resurrected from the spot they were buried) or be taken to prison, they never flee and are always loyal to your cause.
In taverns, you can now choose the magic school of the hero to be recruited, the type of the hero (mage/combat), the gender of the hero and the portrait and the name of the hero. Also there's the barbarian to be recruited, but I don't know if it is only available in stronghold (earlier was said that any town could hire one, but in the beta screenshots only the stronghold has it available).
So now you can theoretically recruit any hero from any tavern. Also remember, that hero specialities are gone.

I know all that
ok, maybe I forgot the fleeing part...
anyway, what I'm trying to say is that each tavern (for example take two Preserve tavern) should offer different heroes... I mean, they can't be in two places at the same time... and yes, without the specialties, it makes no difference who you choose, but what class you choose...

In heroes 3, the heroes start different and end up the same, or nearly so.
In heroes 4, the heroes start the same, or nearly so, and end up different.
It seems to me almost like it doesn't matter which hero you hire, your choices are based on the town, or maybe your starting town.

Not true, retreats and surrenders are still an option. But I don't know how they'll work - does your hero/army move to the nearest town, like a caravan does, without interfering anywhere on the map?

fleeing != retreating/surrendering. It's the thing that happened in heroes 3 when you lost a battle.
Lith-Maethor:
I like this system, as it let's you more freely customize the look and feel of your hero. As you might know, you can't recruit all hero classes from each town. For example in the Order town you can recruit Order, Death and Life type heroes, as they are the schools of magic that order has something to do with.

How does the resurrection and prison system work? Can an allied hero ressurect the dead hero but only with the ressurect spell? And with the prison is there any contact with the prisoner. And is the only way to get him back by taking the castle?
Help me out here!

I have a feeling there are no longer any premade heroes anymore like in the first 3 Heroes games (Sandro, Gem, Alamar, etc..) but you have to totally create your own heroes including name. The only thing that's made for you is the portraits. This sucks. I'd rather have heroes designed by NWC (with their small biography too) than selecting gender, magic, skills, and whatnot alone.

I liked those hero stats. Sometimes i think that nwc are the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked! (ive always wanted to say that)
Stats are more entertaining than just a portrait. People want to know where these heroes come from (and where they didn't).

Hero's Biographies: In the screenshots you can clearly see that the heroes have Bio, so it ain't gone. I bet that there will be couples of heroes (male/female) that have exactly the same abilities and stats.
The thread's idea: That's a good idea, Lith. Much more logical and relistic. I can't understand how can the same hero be in two taverns at the same time even if they are on diffrent edges of an XL map.
Ressurecting: I think it'll be with a spell or a potion. Maybe in the town too.
Prison: Yes, the only way to get you hero out of it is to conquer the town.

Let's calm down here, folks.
Jenova, here's a treat for you: The heroes do come with a bio. For example in one of the shots there's a bio about a lord which explains how did he come up with the nobility skill etc. There are also some old heroes who have come trough the portal to Axioth. You only get to more specificially choose the hero you want to hire. For what I believe, there are premade names for the heroes, but you get to change them if you wish (they might have removed this though, this info is from the video interview six months ago)

Changing gender and name? Sounds like Warlords to me. You was able to change the name in Heroes 3 Map Editor too.
Casting system really reminds me of Magic the Gathering. I hope they have taken as much spells as possible out of it.
Graphics are outstanding. I really like the new look of Heroes (especially the adventure map looks great) albeit some creatures (like Ogre Magi) could look better. Graphics seem to be a mixture of Heroes 2 and Heroes3. Heroes 4 looks more like roleplaying and has a book like appearance in all its colourfulness.
There are lots of innovative ideas. Overall, Im really pleased with Heroes 4. But you can't know whether the game is good or not without playing it first.

Yeah the magic system was quite obviously stolen from magic the gathering. Not that this is a bad thing though, they had a quite interesting and balanced magic system, and it translates well to RPGs and strategy games. It also has alot of flavor to it. You can see alot of spells from Magic in the game too, like the white wards, and the blue fly spells, and things like that.

You get to change their gender (and probably even name) but wouldn't this make their Bio no longer match them? Or does it generate the Bio on the fly depending on the settings of the hero you selected? For example, if I chose a male necromancer will he have "Sandro's" bio? Or will I choose a hero named Sandro and then change him to a female, change his name to Sandrina and he will still have Sandro's bio?

About the named heroes that have already been discovered, they are probably campaign specific (Lord Haart, Catherine, etc..) and few in number. Every other hero will probably be custom made, which is understandable I suppose since there will be so many hero types that they can't possibly provide enough designs for every class.
