reworked race-faction systems
Before I begin, some warnings/guidelines:
1) This is done solely for fun and amusement. Thus any wining, complaints that it is stupid, I don't like it, too complex, too many creatures, etc, will be completely ignored and disregarded.
2) If you want to compare this to something you thought up, that's great, you are more than welcome. Self-promotion without any direct link to the topic at hand will be treated in the same lieu as the above.
If at all possible I'll ask moderators to remove posts that fall short of those 2 simple guidelines, if not, well, it costs me nothing to continue ignoring their existence.
This idea is not set in any specific setting, it just occurred to me that it might be fun to group together factions who have some racial/thematic similarities together into one nation, and then it went from there. It is still very much a work in progress, and I invite any enthusiast to join in on the fun.
The underlying idea is that we have nations as some sort of greater factions for relations with each other, each nation consisting of three (numbers can change) old school factions.
So for hero specific skills we have one national/racial and one faction specific. From there we can have hero that leads troops not of his/hers/its own specific faction incur minor penalties if the troops are members of the same nation, and major if they are members of the other nations. I envision racial skills as something similar to the racials of heroes v, while faction specific as a kind of hero specialisations.
That's actually all I've come with for mechanics so far, but I'm eager to see what others can make out of the basic idea.
As for the nations I have 3 mostly complete and one a bit over 2/3 done. Note that it is still in early stages and changes are very likely.
I've cut the tier numbers to 6 to simplify. Also, I'm giving only base creatures without any details right now since my allotted net time is a bit short.
Human league, or simply the league, and consists of standard militaristic castle with knight hero, economy based Burg, whose hero is yet to be thought out, and the Wizard's Magic guild.
Castle units are:
T1 - Yeomen - renamed peasants (infantry)
T2 - Archer - no need to explain (ranged)
T3 - Squire - ditto to the above (infantry)
T4 - Gryphon - if it ain't broken don try to fix (flyer)
T5 - Priest/Monk - ditto (caster)
T6 - Cavalier/Champion - ditto (mounted)
Burg:
T1 - Gargoyle - Stone constructs lurking on burg rooftops (flyer)
T2 - Militia - Your basic spear-wielding city guardsmen (infantry)
T3 - Crossbowman - Guardsmen armed with powerful ranged weapons (ranged)
T4 - Patrolman - lightly armed and armoured mounted city guard (mounted)
T5 - Assassin - Highly trained operatives equipped with means of teleportation (teleporter)
T6 - Balista - The marvel of craft ingenuity (ranged)
(sidenote: warmachine catapult becomes trebuchet, and a much smaller catapult replaces balista)
Guild:
T1 - Apprentice - young and inexperienced student mages (caster)
T2 - Gremlin - small ugly saboteurs that fly around on improbable hand-choppers (flyer)
(sidenote: Decided to change gremlins to flyers in homage to their airforce origins)
T3 - Golem - standard (infantry)
T4 - Magi - standard (caster)
T5 - Djin - Standard (flyer/support)
T6 - Colossi - Standard (infantry/ranged)
Next come the Wildlands Which is a nation without any real unity, where might makes right and ruthlessness is a hallmark of any true leader. Wildlands are populated by traditional greenskins, beastmen and the monsters they control. They are separated into magic oriented warlocks, mighty barbarians and insidious beastmasters.
(sidenote - any humans, elves and other here are slaves, minotaurs, lizardmen and orcs are hero races, with occasional centaur)
Warlock dungeon:
T1 - Goblin - Check your Irish myths people, goblins are sly tricksters (ranged)
T2 - Coatl - Winged snake, with name a simpliefied derivate of aztec serpent gods (flyer)
T3 - Witch/Mystic - you get the picture (caster)
T4 - ?
T5 - Gorgon - True, greek version; think medusa (mounted/ranged)
T6 - Dragon - you didn't think I'd have anything else here, didja?
Barbarian Fortress:
T1 - Harpy - standard (flyer)
T2 - Wolfrider - need I explain? (mounted)
T3 - Centaur - same as heroes v (ranged)
T4 - Brute - Hulking warrior dragging a very big weapon (infantry)
T5 - Roc - Giantic bird (flyer)
T6 - Cyclops - standard (ranged)
Beastmaster Rampart:
T1 - Basilisk/cockatrice - mounted lizard/bird with paralysing gaze (flyer)
T2 - Slavedriver - Whip wielder (infantry)
T3 - Trapper - Bow wielder who plants traps on battlefield (ranged)
T4 - Troll - hulking mindless beast of vaguely hominid shape with fantastic regenrative capabilities (infantry)
T5 - Wyvern - standard (flyer)
T6 - Hydra - standard (mounted)
Then we have your average union of evil with deamons, undead and lovecraftian creatures of abyss
Necropolis:
T1 - Skeleton - standard (infantry/ranged)
T2 - Zombie - ditto (infantry)
T3 - Ghost - ditto (flyer)
T4 - Vampire - ditto (infantry/flyer)
T5 - Litch - ditto (caster)
T6 - Deathknight (mounted)
Inferno:
T1 - Imp - Standard (flyer)
T2 - Hellhound - ditto (mounted)
T3 - Sucubi - ditto (ranged)
T4 - Nightmare - standard with the tweak that they can run on air (flyer)
T5 - Pit Fiend - ditto (caster)
T6 - Abadon - renamed devil (teleporter)
?:
T1 - Creeper - Disgusting mass of tentacles, claws and teeth (infantry)
T2 - Beholder/Evil eye - no need to explain (ranged/caster)
T3 - ?
T4 - Doppelgänger - insidious shapeshifter with no true shape of it's own (flyer)
T5 - Allu - explanatory wiki link (caster)
T6 - ?
And finally we come to the Elvencourt (no need to specify the race )
It consist of The Sylvan (wood elves), Stelar (stargazing high elves) and a third I haven't thought of yet, probably Solar
Sylvan (Ranger):
T1 - Pixie - standard (flyer)
T2 - Wolf - no need to explain (mounted)
T3 - Hunter - standard (ranged)
T4 - Pegasi - do I really need to explain? (flyer)
T5 - Druid - standard (caster)
T6 - Treant - standard (infantry)
Stelar (Sage):
T1 - Wisp - sentient energy beings living in symbiosis with elves (caster)
T2 - Alicanto - explanatory wiki link (flyer)
T3 - Sorcerer/Enchanter - basicaly elven mage (caster)
T4 - Werewolf - Not cursed beasts, but elves using the mystical powers of the moon to transform (mounted)
T5 - Unicorn - Standard with the ability to teleport (teleporter)
T6 - ? - caster would be preferable
Solar?:
T1 - ?
T2 - Bladedancer - Standard (infantry)
T3 - ?
T4 - ?
T5 - ?
T6 - Phoenix - standard (flyer)
I'll be back with more as soon as I get more time on the internet. Thanks in advance to any interested parties.

Sounds like a subterranean themed nation you got there. Demons, Shapeshifters and Aberration Types.
With your collection of nations, Necropolis, Inferno and ? sound very symbolic of the levels of evil placed in a simple 3-tier structure;
1. Necropolis
2. ?
3. Inferno
I personal think your concept has great potential and brilliance in its conception.

Reasonable suggestion
Burg hero suggestions: General; Lord; Freelancer; I'm not sure how exactly the setting of the Burg is in your mind...

For the Beastmaster, the basilisk is too strong for a Tier One. Swap it out with the trapper guy.

Ok, I have to admit I've totally forgotten about this, until I was notified that warlord had posted on, so for that, thank you wl.
As for your suggestion, sorry, I like where it is right now. I already said that I'm not working in any established setting, so I'm free to interpret creatures however I like
as for updates, well I'm thinking Praetor for burg hero, Heliophant for solar (Helios+hierophant) and Darklord for abyss.
also for abyss:
T3 - Chimera - Abominable creature of chaos made out of pieces of many different animals, including, but not limited to lion, goat, snakes and scorpion (mounted)
T6 - Void worm - Unimaginably old and dangerous denizens of deepest abyss that can bore through the very nature of reality.
That's all for now, I'll try to come back again with more updates soon

All right. The Solar Elves might have some fire elemental or something? Or a burning Treeant?

So make him be something like a Horned Grunt. A one-time suicide squad that does damage before getting killed.

Well, I'd say a big honking flaming bird is a blatant enough creature of fire, so fire elementals would be a bit... redundant. And I'm with bixie on the flaming treant - it just doesn't really make sense to me...
Let's try a different venue - Sylvan are typical wood elves, and stellars are pretty much high elves, so what does that leave for solars? I'm leaning towards something like wild elves, with a dash of religious fanaticism, but it is nothing definite. So maybe something like a pyromancer/sun priest for a caster?

Ok, folks, I've been thinking and decided that for solars, I'll look into Sumerian and Egyptian mythology in search for units, since both nations had very strong sun cults.
Theese are the only two choices I liked so far:
T1 - Scarab/Kherpri (flyer) I certainly hope I don't have to explain that one.
T4 - Scorpman (mounted) explanatory link
