It's the most cliché faction in the game, so tired of it. The options for "reinvention" are limited, other than bringing the Mummy back or do undead "other creatures" like Bone Dragon, it's a dead end. Merging with Inferno was cool, the comeback in HOMMV was disappointing, not only they didn't even add anything to the campaign storyline, it was stupid to make a creature that's "death itself" but put it below the Bone Dragon. Maybe they can take inspiration from Blizzard, who managed to make the undead faction interesting.

@danny: no it ain't - Castle/Haven is even more cliché, less changed, etc. Also, it's just fitting. AND I hated the HIV death! didn't found it so fitting, allthough the general idea of merging with inferno ain't bad, but - as complete HIV - very poorly realized. That's just my humble opinion, but I want necropolis to be kept somehow. It just belongs to HoMM...

thanks.
Here, considering that some don't want necropolis to come again, compeltely, here some merging options:
Necropolis + Inferno: Underworld:
1 Imp > Vermin/Familiar
2 Zombie > Ghoul/Rotten Zombie
3 Lost Soul > Ghost/Tortured Soul
4 Hell Hound > Cerberus/Ghostly Hound
5 Black Priest > Heretic/Lich
6 Black Rider > Black Knight/Hell Knight
7 Greater Demon > Archdemon/Fallen Angel
Place of Hell Hound & Lost Soul could be changed.
You see that for most units I tried to make one upgrade more undead and one more demonic. I think, this merging of inferno & necropolis could be better than the H4 one^^
Necropolis + Mages: Greed for Power&Knowledge:
Necromancy, at last, is just a form of magic. What if the magi wouldn't ban it, but greet the Necromancers as powerful mages? ...the society of both could change drastically!
1 Skeleton Worker > Skeleton Warrior/Skeleton Builder
2 Gargoyle > Bone Gargoyle/Obsidian Gargoyle
3 Stone Golem > Flesh Golem/Iron Golem
4 Mage > Lich/Archmage
5 Djin > Wraith/Djin Sultan
6 Arcane Knight > Deathknight/Winged Knight
7 Giant > Giant Cadavre/Titan
Again, the upgrade CAN get it undead - or not, just as you wish. Only exception the skeleton worker -didn't want ANY gremlin skeletons
Necropolis + Stronghold: Death & Destruction:
It seems unlikely, but what if the necromancers confess the Barbarians to work together and bring destruction and death on earth ... the barbarians kill and the necromancers raise, ain't that a pretty combination?
1 Goblin > Goblin Marauder/Ghoul
2 Orc Warrior > Berserker/Undead Orc
3 Wolf zombie > Zombie Rider/Werewolf
4 Vampire > Orc Vampire/Vampire Prince
5 Shaman > Firebringer/Lich
6 Ogre > Two-headed Ogre/Ogre Skeleton
7 Cyclops > Furious Cyclops/Blood Giant

Have to say I disagree with most of this, it's no more cliché than the Christian Haven and it has a ton of options for revision (I've got 2 or 3 new creatures in my thread). Also, merging it with Inferno was a terrible idea, you'd probably have got better results with merging Fortress (Sylvan) and Tower (Academy).
Oh and Jiriki, merging factions doesn't work, you just end up with even more of a hodge-podge than are the normal factions.
Oh, and a few creatures you might want to consider:
Ghoul
Bone Serpent (big snake made from the ribs/ribcages of killed enemies)
Mounds (basically just piles of bones or lumps of flesh that can shamble about, but do damage all around)
Zombies (not new, but you could try making them look as though they 'haven't' come straight out of a zombie-apocalypse movie)
Headless (undead without heads, honestly, why would they need them, they mostly have neither eyes nor brains)
Mixes (basically chopping and changing, make a creature any shape you want)
Animals
Aviforms (look like birds, but bigger because they're made from bigger animals)
And that's only sticking with the current Necro. style, if you go for a different Necro. style there's no reason you can't have even more different creatures.

Okay, no, merging isn't bad, but simply swapping creatures is, because Necro is as much a faction as any other, so it'd look as weird as trying to swap, say Sylvan and Academy creatures, because they have totally different backgrounds.

I have no problems with the Skellies in any way whatsoever. Their general weakness is compensated by high numbers, and it should remain that way. Personally, IF skellies are the Tier 1 creature, they should be quick and agile (High speed due to their light weight), but rather harmless in 1vs1 battles (low Hp, Attack and Damage). IF their tier is increased, OR Necromancy is weakened, they should keep their speed, and become offencively oriented to compensate the loss of Mass Necromancy. IMO, they should be tier 2, and not 1, but that's just my opinion.
Zombies/Corpses should be the Tier 1 creatures imo. It just makes more sence. They are lumbering, weak by default, AND plentifull. I mean, which of the two are more common in horror games/Movies? Skeletons or Zombies? Go Figure.
However IF Zombies remain Tier two creatures, their tankiness should be boosted. Abilities like Fierce Retaliation, Unlimited Retaliation, Armored, Taunt (just to name some H5 specials) would all work well on Zombies, even for creatures of the second tier. It would boost their usefullness (as far as they had any, that is). Boosting Damage and Speed (not initiative) could also help.
Ghosts imo should be fast, and have (indirect) bonusses in fights with non-magical creatures. They should either be incorporeal, like in H5, OR Insubstanial, like in H4. Either one will work. Upgrades can get some Magic Counters (like the Spectre's Mana Drain Ability in H5). Their hit points and defence skills should be low, otherwise their insubtanciality/Incorporealness becomes broken. Speed and Attack should be high, Initiative and Damage moderate

Go for the Necro/Academy then, the other two don't feel right (Orcs don't feel magical to me, and I can't imagine Necro. and Inferno being the best of friends, more like barely tolerated enemies, ie, Hitler and Stalin).

...these are all just propositions, anyway. It seemed to me that lizard wanted to gather ideas, and I gave some
another one:
Undead Elves - the Crypt:
1 Walking Dead > Elf Zombie/Zombie Warrior
2 Centaur Cadavre > Skeletal Centaur/Nefarious Centaur
3 Elven Skeleton > Skeleton Hunter/Boneblade
4 ?
5 Dead Tree > Decayed Oak/Bare-Branched Tree

I agree with Lexxan,Zombies are weak, slow and use just hands or small weapons. In necropolis must be more skeletons, like skeleton arche, warrior, knight, lich etc.

No, they just need to get rid of the idea that zombies have to be the slow lurching things out of zombie-apocalypse movies. Once they realise that zombies can move at a decent speed they can do soo much more with them. They can even have levels of zombiefication, ie, at low levels they're mindless rotting corpses, put a bit more magic in and you can stop them rotting and set them to more complex tasks like shooting a crossbow, and at high levels you can have them self-heal.

Skeletons are better, the bones are stronger like iron, but they can are brittle, even this they can resist to cuts(the best way is to use a hammer ).Who need zombies, skeletons are future of the necropolis! There are soo many possible skeletons:
1.Skeleton Archer
2.Skeleton Warrior
3.Skeleton Mage
4.Skeleton Rider
5.Grim Reaper(well it's a skeleton )
6.Lich
and even more!!!
P.S:I will make tommorow artowirk of future Necropolis(if interent company who I'm register didn't fail,it must have to pay 25.000lei,around 7000euro)

Oh sure, they can be tough (as if a zombie can't), but they have practically no muscle, so they're only going to be able to tap at you, unlike a zombie who'll be able to put a sword through you, pommel first. BTW, Lichs are skeleton mages, so you only have 4 creatures (Grim Reaper doesn't count either, he's an anthropomorphic personification, not a corporeal being).

No muscle, yes, but they're animated by magic so can make some damage.Zombies stink, full with files, with muscles who are eating by worms(yucks) who need them, skeletons are white and clean(well,by worms, but they leave the skeleton),they're perfect(yes, that's was a joke,if computers will have smell,I didn't want them, zombies)

I can't find the actual file where I'm keeping my fantasy version of H6, but my Ideal Necropolis will be looking like this
Tier 1: Zombie/Gargoyle
Tier 2: Ghost/Ghoul
Tier 3: Skeleton/Revenant
Tier 4: Mummy/Wraith
Tier 5: Lich/Acolyte
Tier 6: Death Knight/Vampire
Tier 7: Bone Dragon/Grim Reaper
(note: each player chooses between one base creature (EG Gargoyles and Zombies are mutually exclusiive), each of which has one default upgrade and an alternative one.)
