No, but seriously, most of them are not that bad. Just not as glamorous as they are on TV.

On the 'making of' for some movies, they talk about the hours of makeup needed..and not just for the 'aliens' or such either. So yeah, just about anybody can look good with a professional team of makeup artists and a couple of hours. However, most of them look good before also. But, alas the billboards and such have given people impossible expectations. *shrugs*

It's not only make-up but Photoshop as well. Even in greater degree than the make-up itself

Unfortunately people buy into it, and as they say 'sex sells'. When people stop being sheeple, and wise up..the advertising will change to match.

I remember reading that after the iron curtain fell one of the first things women in eastern europe started doing was buying makeup from the west. Is that really true?

I'm so glad I'm an apathetic, vindictive SOB. Life must suck so hard for the people that covet and chase that fantasy world.
It's not just about making them look good, or using photoshop, but also paying close attention to each clip in a film. A person looks significantly more or less attractive based on the particular time that you take a picture, and their specific facial expression. A crew is meticulous to make sure models/actors always present themselves photogenically.

Actors and Actresses rarely are attractive on their own. But they have photoshop, best stylists available (those guys can do wonders with people), enough cash to fund themselves expensive clothes, operations to remove their defects like hooked noses, finally their photos and shots are taken 8041235126126 times until their position and expressions are perfect.
Which is a big lie in total. I bet that if you took a random girl on the street, gave her awesome clothes, fantastic specialists and finally photoshoped her, she'd look like miss universe. (on a sidenote, miss world/universe/whatever are never really THAT good looking )
I'm much more impressed by "ordinary" girls that can achieve stunning effects on their own, without stylists, photoshop and scalpels.

Loved the Michael Jackson moment.

Not at all. There are lots of celebrities that are ugly despite the makeup. Makeup doesn't change the look that much.
My question:
Who benefits more from makeup - those naturally beautiful or those not beautiful?

It is like the owner of a phone criticizing the Ipad owner.
We are all, from the first minute we wake up in the morning, practicing make-up all the day long. Wash your hair with shampooing, cut your facial hair, using perfumes, choosing your pants color, wash your shoes, all this is at a certain degree make-up. You will never think to go see your boss or your girlfriend right after wake up, without submitting your self to a bunch of very precise patterns (well, speaking about civilized people, not the homo prehistoric ones- sorry William), whose whole goal is to make you look better. And older you become, more you will be using make up, every day, without even noticing it.

Maybe in France with their Sun-King history of perfumed wigs, powdered faces and artifically beautylized, made up language - no offense, you French sissies people.
But that's of course different in other countries like Germany with their stern, Spartan history of Prussian efficiency and their hard, brutal language. Just look at OUR Lady Chancellor: no amount of makeup or photoshopping will conceal the profound unattractivity of her - and did someone ever see her husband? Compare that with "Napoleon" Sarkozy and HIS wife, ex-model, fine looks, beautiful body, eminently presentable... you French people would never have elected such an ugly hag like or Chancellor, for lack of either aesthetics or the decency to cover things up accordingly (although you should have seen her 5 years ago before the style advisors forced her to adopt a new haircut).
Anyway, a celeb is first and foremost that, and no matter the looks. And all this makeup and photoshop business is just part of selling dreams to people. It's ot about real people, but only about their images forthe public.

I visit Germany regularly and spent maybe 1 full year there in all. There is no difference between germans and french when it comes to coquetry, except the chancellor, but I guess it is voluntary. If you prefer to stink, others do not

Well, historically spoken, the French aristocracy preferred to cover up the stench of their bodies and their castles, manors and estates by perfuming things over instead of leaving the waste in outhouses and washing themselvess, so I'd be careful about mentioning "stink" here.
Washing and cleanliness has nothing to do with make-up, perfume, photoshopping and covering things up.

I strongly doubt that. By the way, do they still have this obsession for dessous in France?
