MMO failures & future

I came across this editorial about why MMOs fail and the future of the genre.  It's worth watching.

That reminds me of the World Domination mode in C&C Tiberian Sun Firestorm, basically an MMO RTS.

There was a world map where the two factions competed against each other. You could choose a contested area of conflict and fight over it with the players of the opposing faction along with different rules. Winning side determined the new over of the area and opened up other areas for conflict. Basically a world war raging front and back between sides. Servers were the usual Europe, US East, US West, etc. Too bad they didn't relaunch the world domination with the First Decade. Would have been interesting if there had been enough players once again.

I'd like to see something similar done by modern means of RTS or maybe rather a few years in the future with better performance. If you could actually throw hundreds of players into a single battle in an RTS that would be amazing.

Woho, finally something besides Zero-Punctation that is worth watching

Well, I think the guy is correct. There is also the chance of something completely unpredictable happen(WoW getting its playerbase is a example, the sheer number was unthinkable!).

And as mentioned over here: RTS genre evolving to MMO level would be fun <3

Well, WoW completly dominates the MMO market today. There is pretty much no competition at all. And since WoW owns that market and it costs so much money and time to make a good MMO, it just isn't worth it making one. The only thing that will kill WoW, is WoW itself or a "WoW 2" which is not likely to happen in a new game but rather in the form of an expansion that changes the game greatly (*cough* cataclysm *cough*)

Actually I understand there already is an RTS MMO in late development or it might already out. I just can't remember the name. It put beginning players in charge of a single squadron and then as they become better they get promoted all the way to field marshalls and get according positions in command. So all the positions from squad leaders to the high command are manned by human players. It was a world war two one. Might be worth checking out.

Wow Joonas. That sounds really awesome! I'd really be interested in the name of such a game.

Hopefully it'll, unlike WoW actually have an opportunity for an ending and development into higher tech wars, or something.
With WoW, the horde vs. alliance is an eternal battle, it's impossible to take on party out.

With a world war 2 game, I'd imagine, it's hopefully possible, if you're say France, to actually conquer Germany, and when Germany is conquered, those troops will then work for France, or something like that. It doesn't have to be like that, but I really would like some kind of development, so there seems to be an achieveable goal (no matter how pointless it is) with the war, which makes the actions taken (going to war) logical.

What?
What would be the point of playing a MMO if it can end? Is it not funnier to have a game you like that gets improved and updated all the time and gets new stuff. I am already tired of the Icecrown Citadel raid in WoW which players have had for over half a year know and Cataclysm seems to come out much later than I expected.

I just actually saw the video and yes, maybe a MMOFPS could be fairly successful but Blizzard are already developing a next-gen MMO which will probably be a MMOFPS since they already have a MMORPG.

My dear Xerox! I did not mean it should end, simply evolve in a way that's logical towards the actions done in game.

Imagine France takes over Germany, just to stay with my example. The producers wants those who now plays for the German Resistance to have a chance (because the game doesn't seem to evolve anymore), so they give them "new discovered technology".

Also, they could make it even better, let there actually be new technology discovered and then both fronts does not only evolve, but when one side looses to much, riots can happen in their own countries and suddenly, Germany can kick out France again.

There are tons of opportunity, I don't want a game to end, I want it to evolve in a logical way suited for the game play. [Though I guess the game is nothing like I'm imagining/drooling over right now].

Nope, it doesn't really evolve in a logical manner towards the sum of actions taken by people. If you attack a horde city as alliance, it doesn't matter how many you're and how high level, you'll eventually loose.

It'd be much cooler if Horde territory would diminish and it'd be like a real land conquering war, in stead of the "oh you dislike eachother, so um, you can fight if you want, on some servers".

The World Dominion Tour of C&C Tiberian Sun Firestorm was exactly that. A real land conquering war. That's part of what I really liked about it. Another side could actually lose.

Of course after that it was resetted.

You fail to adress the grand analyze of the grand speecher, from escapist magazine.
WoW 2 won't become popular, because nobody wants to leave WoW.
Add on that there is the "high cost = MUST NEVER TAKE RISKS ROAR!". Ironically you kind of see the same idiocy over at various comic and manga and series, there is never new stuff because it could fail.
What is bothering me is that the indie games rarely gets "snow done", even if they are revolutionary. There are exceptions(Mount & Blade!), but generally I don't see something getting its braketrough in its niche

Well, in the WotLK expansion a technology known as phasing was implented to several quests. So for instance if you attacked X Scourge base in a quest, it would turn into a Paladin base in the next series of quests. Entire capital cities such as Orgrimmar and the Undercity were changed and phased in quests in WotLK and in a patch, all the Abomination guards in the Undercity were replaced by Orc guards because of the story from the previous quests.
In Cataclysm, Blizzard is going to use even more of this. One of the zones, Hyjal, actually has terrain changes as you quest through the zone. In one quest there is a forest but in the next quest Fire elementals may have incinerated the entire forest.
In Southern Barrens in Cataclysm, you destroy a dwarf fortress in a quest and then it is phased so that it is destroyed with survivors running out of it.

That is why I said that WoW 2 will not be a new stand-alone game but more likely a huge patch coupled with an expansion which would change the game (which Cataclysm is going to do).

Also about the story in WoW being very static, in Cataclysm like half of all faction leaders will be swapped out.
The Tauren gets a new leader, the Orcs a new warchief and the Blood elves lose a leader. On Alliance, the Dwarves get a Council instead of a King and Mal'furion joins Tyrande as the Night elf leader.
Some cities also change a lot. Stormwind will get huuuuuge with a new cemetary and "outdoors" district aswell as losing the Park district. Orgrimmar will be completly remade and reinforced with iron instead of the current stone and wood.

There is actually another MMO than WoW. And it isn't even fantasy. It is far from Warcraft. But what happens when you merge the words Starcraft and Warcraft? You get Starwarscraft.
And Star Wars Craft will be that Star Wars MMO, the Old Republic.

Star Wars: The Old Republic looks pretty cool and I LOVED the trailer and the combat was better than in the movies so I wished it was a movie. It seems to be very focused on the story.

Star Wars: The Old Republic looks cool and I will defintly test it though I think you can only play as human? But that is okay.
