well... not an expert at this (especially on multiplayer - no experience) but i think that Dark is way better... my points are:
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd level spells of each school are kinda opposited as already said, so they're out of the debate.
- 4th and 5th level spells... well, i may say that in these Dark rules, with Frenzy, Blindness and Puppet master... all of them are killing spells! of course, the opponent may cast a Cleansing spell or a Magical immunity spell... but this will happen on his turn, so if you target carefully you can use it on a stack that acts before the enemy hero (well, except Puppet Master, which lowers initiative, but again...)
Lastly, i think that a GREAT combination is Light Magic AND Dark Magic, together with the Sorcery skill: you buff your creatures and debuff the opponents fast ...and bingo!
But as for single school superiority, i am up to Dark, though it depends on the function you play and against who i guess

Actually dark while pretty good it is not all that supreme. Frenzy for instance takes good timing to avoid important close enemy units getting away from the targeted stack, frenzied unit may be teleported or stunned and so on. Blind is probably the easiest curse to dispel, all it takes is a simple spike rocks from hero or a spellcaster unit like druids. Only puppet is a killer, especially with high spellpower. But for a low spellpower faction like inferno, puppet will decrease enemy initiative too much giving time to dispel and the targeted creature won't get many turns. If enemy slows the unit he'll be even safer from it.
Either way dark is mostly about timing, if opponent manages to play right after you with the right counters or he has high resistance you can end up in big trouble. If you play second however..

hmmm... i guess Master Elvin is right about the timing thing and Dark magic... but then, that's what Sorcery is for, right?
But then, everything is about timing, right? it's a strategy game after all! Though i may say that another type of magic that might be extremely difficult without a proper counter would be Summoning, mainly due to phantom forces and Summon Phoenix spells (but that's another story/thread then).
Also, i read somewhere another pro: mass slow actually works like Haste for your creatures... AND your Hero as well, which is somehow kinda true, if you neglect the opponent hero.

Personally, I prefer Dark Magic as a whole, but I must admit that having Mass Divine Strength and Mass Endurance is a pretty powerful combo for the light side, ESPECIALLY with high levels of spellpower! **..nods wisely..**

You got it wrong Varsuvius, it's summoning that HAS to get the right timing to be effective. Both phantom and phoenix have plenty of counters.
Sorcery doesn't necessarily help with timing, it can break it. Mass spells may not be affected but if you do play second(clear advantage) and you cast a puppet then you'll play just before the enemy hero in the next turn - giving him a chance to counter whatever you cast.

Hi Elvin,
I seem to always be strongest with a Light&Summon combo. But then I am not in the big leagues But I think I can say with certainty;it is 'speed' that rules out of the gate. I fought a maxed-out barbarian ( from a fine fan-map) that alsolutely blistered across the battlefield, It felt like I was two to three turns behind. Like you said, not much chance for summoning anything Most of the time though, too often, I am able to heal damaged stacks as I go, but would I be correct in guessing that everything changes when getting away from A.I. battles and going against our peers?
I can't do the on-line thing but prefer the hotseat, so my quality of opponent is limited and best with a long-lasting custom-map.
Just curious, but what magic school used by a human has given you the most serious challenge?
