Nightshifts
Hey
Not sure where to put this thread?
But..
Do you think that nightshifts can throw you emotional off balance - turn happy to sad ?
I am working at nights at current time and these past months I have been feeling more and more unhappy.. do you think this is the nightshifts or should I find another source?

It could. You get vitamine D from sunlight. A deficiency in D can cause depression and fatigue. Night shifts: you may not get enough sun, especially in your country.

I know it's all relative, but you live on the roof of the world where you live for several weeks without any sunshine at all. You can't claim everything below you is sunny

As somebody with a buildt inn snowed up sleeping routine: It might be that your body is saying that it does not like being up during the nights.
I would personally do a lot of toil and trouble to acquire such a golden gift of a job.

Do you have a stable rhytm?
So do you keep up the nightshift rhytm during weekends and other free days too?
Do you sleep enough and do you sleep well?
Are you eating and drinking enough?

@Dagoth
I personally dont believe in the sunlight thing, I get just as much sunlight as I always do And I eat vitamines everyday.

I have nothing stable at the weekends, so far I have been to a lot of parties and social events in the weekends, both at nights and day, but I try to turn it around to day time because I need to be social with fx my GF and family.
I sleep more than enough, I actully sleep more then what I would normally do. and yes, I sleep pretty good
I eat Breakfast, VERY LITTLE when I get up, not hungry there, I eat dinner and perhaps an evening snack and then we get food at work of course around 02.00 .- so I eat around the same, but I think I eat a little More - bigger meals - and yes I drink plenty, often 1 bottle at work and two-three glasses of water when I eat in the middle of the night, and plenty when I am off work

It varies from person to person, but having a shifty, unstable sleep schedule will somewhat **** anybody up (most college kids torture themselves without realizing/acknowledging it). Just simply working during the night shouldn't mess you up, but if you're a natural lover of daylight and the hustle and bustle that comes with it, then it could make you sad. I worked nightshift at a hotel during the summer of my junior year of college and I didn't really mind it. I just did my job and then kicked back and dug into reading material during the slow hours.

Has your social time declined?
Quote: I sleep more than enough, I actully sleep more then what I would normally do. and yes, I sleep pretty good
Sleeping more than you normally do is actually a sign of not sleeping well.

Eating more is another sign that you're not resting as good.
Light does effect the human body in terms of depression too and sunlight is heaps of times stronger than artificial lightning.
I'm a finn. We get these dark times at winter and everyone get's more down than they are at summer. So it does effect too.
I'm quessing either because your rhytm isn't stable enough so you don't rest that well or your social time has diminished.

I like it more when there are more people around and I have a more social enviorment .
I am sleeping around 7-8 hours a day, which is normal, but I feel like it is a long time..
Maybe nighttime isnt my time?

I don't see the relation between unhappiness and what you are all talking about
what makes you feel unhappy? probably not night shifts nor food nor sleep but only you.
then, what do you think is disatisfying you? you don't like working at night? you don't like the job?
Quote: I like it more when there are more people around and I have a more social enviorment .
maybe that's it, the work atmosphere isn't good? in factories the people seem like robots, it's really depressing. and in the worst case there is an overseer telling you exactly how to work so that you can't do it your own way.
you might want to read Christophe Dejours for example, about psychological illness due to work (well, actually, they are always due to you, but for most people, it seems easier to just change work than to work on themselves. of course, that doesn't mean you should train your mind to bear unbearable work conditions, you shouldn't have to make an effort to accept what is unacceptable)

No, nightshifts are not making you depressed. As Fauch said, it's only you. I work night shifts and I have been for years, as does other members of my family and I'm not depressed because of it and neither are they. For me, no matter how much or little I sleep (it's usually very little), it doesn't really affect me. It may vary from person to person but sleep doesn't make me depressed. Not getting out enough doesn't make me depressed. It's just different for different people I think. So no matter what people say, like Joonas or DG or whatever, I think it is to do with you and not outside effects.

morbid? that is to say?
maybe, inconsciously, you are imitating them?
there's something you can do to bring more life, or are those guys completely dead, or is there an overseer ready to blame you as soon as you try something?
becoming as a machine is just a process to protect yourself psychologically. if I remember well what Christophe Dejours says. let's consider you don't like your job. it is boring and meaningless. at 1st, you try to think about something else while working, but since you have to execute those tasks, you are constantly reminded of that work, you can't evade and you are in a psychological conflict, you want to escape from work, but you have to work.
understanding that trying to flee creates psychological pain, people decide to not think anymore, and to achieve that, they become zealous about their work, trying to get more and more efficient so that they don't have the time to think anymore, and that way, they turn themselves into machines.
note that pressures for results are of course another reason why people become super zealous. in all case, it's due to fear.
also note, that you may not be able to awaken them. if they reached a state that they consider is satisfying (even if they are probably wrong) they will cling to it, oppose resistance to what you propose and possibly try to convert you so that you aren't a threat to their psychological security anymore.

They just work because they need a job, you know?
They complain about everything and everyone - I think they hate their job, most of them, but they need their job -
but it is going better, I am just ignoring their complaints
Atleast I got two guys I can communicate with - one who plays WoW and one who is around my age, but he is going to be on dayshifts again soon :/
