Create your personal Best of CD of your favorite artists
I think this idea deserves its own thread.
The idea is that you create YOUR OWN PERSONAL Best of DOUBLE CD of your favorite musical artists.
To give this a certain form, it should be a DOUBLE CD, that is, 2 CDs, both not longer than 78 minutes playing time. For less productive artists or if you feel like it ONE CD is possible, too.
Of course comparison may make this interesting, and, yes, I realize that this involves work, but I think it's fine, and I also think it makes a lot more sense than dropping a couple of names into it.
No matter what you do, I think I'm going to do this for my favorites when I'm in the mood. Since I had the idea writing about Daavid Bowie and my inability to decide on which of his albums I like best, I will start with my very own personal Best of David Bowie double CD, which I will probably post in a a couple of hours.
I invite people interested in music to follow suit with favorites, this could be a lot of fun.

Right.
David Bowie. A real monster of popular music, an artist of epic proportion.
While his album Let's Dance in 1983 was massively successful, artistically it's the first of a long row of irrelevant albums. 80s were wasted, 90s saw a recovery, with his 21st century recordings Heathen and Reality being good, but largely irrelevant in terms of significance. This is reflected in my Best of which doesn't feature songs from after 1980 except from the Outside album of 1995 which has its moments.
You'll notice that some well known songs are NOT included. That's alright. It's a SUBJECTIVE Best Of. I just don't like Bowie singing German on Heroes. That just sucks.
China Girl - for me - isn't a Bowie Song - that's Iggy Pop, and Iggy is superior. The same is true for Cactus on Heathen. The Pixies are just better performing the song. Lastly, Let's Dance. Yeah, the song is good. But it's a fluke in the long run. On a 3 CD box it was as in as Heroes, but, well ...

Ok, with six songs fróm Aladdin Sane this looks like a clear vote. I suppose Aladdin Sane in 1973 was the perfect artistical statement of Bowie, at least for me.
Station To Station is just awesome, though, while Ziggy Stardust is basically an opera and shines with its artistical tightness. Lastly Scary Monsters features outstanding guitar work by Robert Fripp, highlighting the album as a very special one.
Interestingly enough Low has grown on me the same way as it has on critics. Initially received with very mixed emotions, today Low is considered something like a masterpiece far beyond its time.
And the most underrated Bowie album would be Lodger.

Oh ... I do this on a regular basis for my iPod.  I have made dozens of collections with bands and artists like Michael Jackson, Genesis, Sheryl Crow, R.E.M., Depeche Mode, Dire Straits, Roxette, Muse, Jens Lekman, Alanis Morissette and Abba, to name some.
But it'll probably be rather uninteresting to list them all. But we can make a competition to mix the best collection of songs by a certain artist - but the forum is probably too narrow to have many entries on a specific artist.

I think that poll-like majority lists are pretty useless - in that case you could just take the actual Best of and Greatest Hits compilations. One reason is, that not many people would know all albums of an artist, which means the not so well known songsfrom albums are immediately out of the competetion.
A more interesting kind of competetion would be to make a poll for more specific stuff, for example, which "Double-A-Side" Beatles single is best:
1) We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper
2) Michelle/Girl (Double A-Side Single in Germany)
3) Eleanor Rigby/Yellw Submarine
4) Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever
5) Come Together/Something
Even though I don't think it was a specific Double A-Side
6) Hey Jude/Revolution
might be onsidered as well.

Yes, problem is that the number of (in this case) Beatles aficionados on this board is probably countable on one hand, which makes such sort of discussions rather limited.

Well, for these very SPECIFIC things you wouldn't need to be an afficionado - everyone would know at least a couple of songs and could easily listen to the unknown ones.
So comparing and polling for a handful of songs or two albums or something like that would BE possible, I suppose.

Oh well, back to original topic, to throw something on the table: I made a little correction to a Michael Jackson compilation which I really love - it's called HIStory Rewritten because it's basically the original HIStory album, just with some minor changes.
I think HIStory is one of the greatest compilation albums ever, because it:
- Features an immaculate collection of songs
- Mixes up the running order in a great way, so that songs are not just in chronological order, but newer and older songs are mixed and still the flow is great
- Artwork was amazing
The flaw of the original release was that it had one CD of old material (15 tracks) and one CD of new material (15 tracks). While the idea itself wasn't bad, some of the new material simply didn't stand up to the old stuff - and some truely indispensable songs were left off, because the first CD didn't have room for them (Dirty Diana, Human Nature, Smooth Criminal, In The Closet, etc.). So I made it instead so that the first three "sides" (think LP/MC) consist of old material, and then only the last fourth side has the best of the newer tracks. Sweet!
And yes, he did release material after 1995, but not much of it was really that great. Ok, there were some fantastic songs (Morphine, Speechless), but in the big picture, this for me are the "essentials", and if it had been released like that back in 1995, would have been the ultimate Michael Jackson collection.

LOL, I realize there are TWO polls in it:
1) Decide between the two songs for each of the singles.
2) Bring te Singles into an order ( 1-6 )
So this would be like:
1) Day Tripper

6) Hey Jude
The only one not close is Eleanor Rigby.
And
1) Penny Lane/Stawberry Fields (That's just TOO masterful)

mainly because Yelow Submarine is so lame.
