HoMM-Chess-Idea
Okay, not even sure wether this should be in the altar...one of us here (sorry, I really forgot who) had compared HoMM battle to chess. I just thought: Why not make a Chess-HoMM-Merging.
Basically, you have a normal chess field and rules. But instead of having the same troops, each player chooses their faction. Each faction has their own troops, with different movement patterns and abilities.
There can also be obstacles used, which are placed by throwing one d6 and one d8 for each of them. Obstacles can't be crossed except by moves which "jump".
The figures here are stated like this:
Tier 1 are the chess peasants
Tier 2 are the Knights
Tier 3 are the Bishops
Tier 4 are the Castles/Rooks
Tier 5 is the "Queen"
The Hero is the "King".
Usually, the starting set-up is the same as in chess, here^^
Often-used abilities:
Range-attack: The figure CAN attack a square without moving on it. RA-pattern often differs from the creatures move pattern.
So here we go for the factions:
Castle/Haven:
A classic in HoMM. The lineup is quite obvious:
Tier 1: Peasant - moves and attacks like the Chess peasant. No other abilities.
Tier 2: Bowman - moves like the Chess peasant. Can range-attack like the Bishop.
Tier 3: Griffin - Moves and Attacks like a Knight. Can also attack diagonally within 2 squares range.
Tier 4: Champion - Moves like a Rook.
Tier 5: Angel - Moves like a Bishop, but flying. Can, once in a battle, ressurrect a single piece up to Tier 4 on a square next to it.
Hero: Knight
Necropolis:
Another classic in HoMM:
Tier 1: Zombie - Moves and attacks like a king. When a zombie is killed, the piece which killed it cannot attack next turn.
Tier 2: Skeleton - Moves up to three squares forward, attacks the squares next to that.
Tier 3: Vampire - Moves like a Bishop. when a vampire destroys a piece Tier 2 or higher, you may place a Zombie-Piece on the position from which the vampire started.
Tier 4: Deathknight - Moves and Attacks like a Rook.
Tier 5: Ghost Dragon - Moves and attacks like a Queen, but flying. Enemies can't move on the squares directly next to a bone dragon.
Hero: Necromancer
Rampart:
The good old Nature Faction^^
Tier 1: ?
Tier 2: ?
Tier 3: ?
Tier 4: Ranger - Moves and attacks like a Knight. Can range-attack like a Bishop.
Tier 5: Phoenix - Moves and attacks in all lines(=queen), but only in the range of 4 squares. Can recover from death one time.
Hero: Druid
Stronghold:
Barbarians
Tier 1: Goblin - Moves and attacks up to two steps forward. Can move backwards up to 2 steps.
Tier 2: Wolf Rider - Moves and attacks like Knight.
Tier 3: Ogre Mage - Moves and attack like a queen, but in a range of 2 squares. As long as you have at least one Ogre Mage, Goblins can also attack like peasants.
Tier 4: Roc - Moves like a Bishop, but Flying.
Tier 5: Behemoth - Moves like a Rook. When it attacks, the pieces left & right of the target square are destroyed, too.
Hero: Barbarian
Dungeon:
Hooray for Monsters!
Tier 1: ?
Tier 2: Harpy - Moves and range-attacks like a knight.
Tier 3: ? - Moves like a Bishop.
Tier 4: Minotaur - Moves like a Rook, attacks like a Bishop.
Tier 5: Dragon - Moves like a Queen, but flying. Attacks like a rook, but destroys pieces up to Tier 4 which stand directly behind the target, in attack line, too.
Hero: Druid
Academy:
Tier 1: Golem - Moves 1 forward. Attacks in all four directions (not diagonally!), but only 1 square.
Tier 2: Gargoyle - Makes leaps of 3 in 1 direction, then 1 to the left or right (like a knight makes 2 and 1).
Tier 3: Mage -Moves like a Peasant, Range-Attacks like Rook.
Tier 4: Djin - Moves and attacks in up to 2 directly-following Knight-Leaps. Attack ends its turn!!!
Tier 5: Titan - moves like a King. Range-Attacks like a Queen.
Hero: Wizard

So to be able to plan my game ahead I'd have to memorize the specific movement and attack system of every single troop in every army?
Complicated...!

Urgh, no thanks, Chess moves belong in Chess, not in HoMM/MM:H.

The appeal in chess is its well defined moves/rules developed in centuries after centuries and perfectly equal armies. Doubt the same could be accomplished in heroes.

Already done and 100% similar to chess moves (less squares unfortunatelly). 300 spartans scenario for WoG.
I guess it could be done also to work with 64 squares but I doubt anyone would be interested to play chess on Heroes, except special fun features.

BAH noone here likes complexity as I does...moves would be stated on a tablet which comes twice for each faction with the game. You can read it and see yours and your enemies' move options.
...it should by no means replace chess or heroes but be just a variant to play when you want.
...didn't know something like thsi exists - yet I thought more about a board game adaption than a pc one...

This could make a nice minigame on Heroes, but I wouldn't make it the main battle system.

arh you people get me so wrong...
This is not meant for being in heroes, but as a game OF ITS OWN!!! Board or pc, don't matter. But it would and could replace neither chess nor homm!

I agree with Drakon, it could make a cool board game! But I personaly wouldn't buy it if it was a video game.

as a video game, it would be easier since it could always easily SHOW you the walking patterns.
As a boardgame...it's not easy to make Make some pieces (maybe of wood, or board), mark them by, f.e. printing Heroes Creature Pics & putting them on the pieces, make some obstacle markers, too, and off you go.
