I really liked the terrain music for H4, but I didn't like the town themes. I enjoy opera, but it just didn't fit well with Heroes for me. I also quited liked the terrain music from H3 and some of the music from H5. Overall I'd say I preferred H3/H4.

That terrain music was my favorite too. That's what I prefer to have on when drawing.
Make a great, er, evening.

Quote: I have enjoyed the music behind HoMM III so much that I made a CD to listen to while I draw.
I can relate
Quote: He made some music that was beautiful and <imo> written to capture the essence of his subject. I think we could all agree that; "Essence Capturing' is hit or miss to individual tastes.
I think you hit the nail on the head here Markkur. The music for these games should all be "essence capturing". In other words, it should be more ambiance than a subject in itself. The music is certainly subject to taste but I understand what you mean.
The music in Heroes III was the most fitting because it didn't stick out from the texture of the game (if that makes sense). I felt Heroes V music, and II to a certain extent, was a bit overbearing/overdramatic for their respective games. Heroes III having a soundtrack that was almost exclusively instrumental helped make it such a success.
The other thing that bothers me is the lack of continuity in music from game to game. There are no themes or motifs that are passed from one game to the next and I think that hurts the Heroes series as a whole. For instance, when you hear the Mario Bros. overworld theme you think Mario. When you hear the Legend of Zelda overworld theme you think Legend of Zelda. There is no such theme for heroes that all the games share such that when you hear it you can say "oh hey that's HOMM".

FOR ALL: Please read the post by Cepheus in the headlines about the music of HoMM.

Thank you for jumping in Yan, or should I say Yanni Have you heard him?

An excellent point. I think overall, it was best achieved in III.

Another very good point Yan. Never really thought about it till now. That idea evidently works, because Peter Jackson's awesome composer, Howard Shore, used it very effectively in 'The Rings'. Every time it was 'crunch time' and the fellowship was in trouble, we heard the 'courage & hope theme' in the background, and as long as not done too much, it added alot to the scene.
Create a great day, Markkur

I like the Stronghold a lot too but didn't you feel it a little 'over the top' for a Barbarian?
I like the Haven's theme too. I like most of the music in HoMM5, what gets to me is that there is not much of it. The same short segments play over and over. The battle-music in 3 had three versions to offer variety. I hope they think that way in 6.
Take care
