I never finished Planescape. I never could figure out why people thought it was so great. I think I got stuck and didn't have enough motivation to get unstuck or read a walkthrough.

One can never play too many Forgotten Realms games, and anything linked to Haer'Deity is epic win by default.
Beside, that floating skull (Morte?), which is voiced by the same person who did Sir Anomen, is already winning me over ^_^

I actually looked it up when I play BG2 last time and was looking at the voice actors. Names like Jim Cummings (Minsc), Grey DeLisle (Viconia, Nalia), Kath Soucie (Aerie, Ellesime), Heidi Shannon (Jaheira, Faldorn) and Rob Paulsen (Anomen) -among many others- come up quite a lot throughout Voice Acting business.
It's scary really, so see all the people voice characters in nearly every game or animated TV Series. Can you imagine Minsc voicing Winnie the Pooh??? (and it's true, that.)

OK, after all the peer pressure I hunted down my disc and installed Planescape.
Now I have to make a character, any suggestions?

The game is very dialogue-heavy. Your wisdom and intelligence scores directly affect how much of the story is revealed to you, so you may like to have those high. Apparently if you play as a pea-brained fighter, it's perfectly conceivable that you finish the game without ever finding out what's going on. From what I know, strength does also affect dialogue options by making you appropriately convincing when threatening various NPCs.
Most combat is avoidable, but not all. Don't let yourself slip into a false sense of security by assuming you can just ignore your party's combat ability. Sure enough, you should have more than enough magic on your or your companions' hands by the time combat becomes inevitable, and resurrection is readily available throughout the game from what I know.

I enjoyed the game once I got over my interface problems. Another problem I had was that my dumb warrior couldn't convince party members to talk to him. I'm sure I missed out on some good stuff. I shouldn't have to play a wizard to get dialogue.
My other gripe was 'plagiarism'. I lost my document in a hard drive wipe but I had shared some with Elvin. There are chunks that obviously come from Planescape board games which I don't really have a problem with. I did have a problem with a 'tale' by the story teller at the inn being copied word for word from a story I had read the previous day in a fantasy story collection. Also, some chunks of text involving crystals are cut and paste from Nine Princes in Amber. When I brought that up on a different forum they said there was an acknowledgment of Zelazny in the manual. I'm not sure that flies.
That aside it was a fun game with good descriptive writing. Did anyone else notice similarities in music tracks to Fallout (one)?

I'd suggest 15-16 wisdom and intelligence, those can be increased later and they do make your experience of the game so much richer. High charisma can really pay off but then you'd have to sacrifice something, I preferred to get high wis/int plus 13 strenth so that I could increase it later and still be a capable fighter.
The final confrontation and Ravel were truly brilliant. So many possible ways to conclude the game, you can simply do it your way.

I'm not far into the game so I can still start over. (just left the mortuary)
I started building a mage with
16 int
17 wis
14 str
10 con
9 dex
9 chr
My first level I put a point into int to bring it to 17.
Next I'll get some points into con, then dex. I'll do the con first so I can start adding up hit points.
Most of the stuff I read says that it's better to have a balance in this game instead of being uber fighter or uber mage. I've also read that thieves aren't really needed in this game since you can get a pc thief early to do all the fun stuff.

Oh yea. I checked prices at Ebay and it looks like Planescape sells for a pretty high price. Maybe I should download the one for 10 bucks and sell my boxed game with manual for $50.

I bought mine last year in a box set with the full Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale sagas as well as some Lionheart thing for a grand total of 60zl, which is probably 20 USD or so.

Your character seems pretty alright. Btw do not worry too much about stats, you will soon be able to get tattos that increase them. I think the max intelligence you need to get the smarter answers is 16-17 so you should be alright for now Also iirc wisdom increased your amount of experience so it's always a good idea to get some more. Dexterity besides being a thief only has one option, quickly snapping necks in conversation Even so I think that only happens rarely.
