Heroes Stats Don't Carry Over! (H3 SOD Unholy Alliance)
Is this correct?
Because I've just started the Unholy Alliance campaign and the stats, spells and skills I worked hard for didn't carry over!
Surely this can't be right?

They carry over within a single campaign, but they do not carry over form one campaign to a different one.
Yea it sucks, but that's how those campaigns work.
About the only thing you can do is keep restarting until you get a decent set of skills. You can win those campaigns without having an uber hero.
Another possibility is to edit the map with a starting hero with the stats and skills you want.

I am playing Unholy Alliance. Started the Gem and Clancy scenario after completing the other three heroes scenarios. I don't have Gem showing up as a hero though! I get Clancy and a random Rampart town hero. Nor do I get the scroll of Destroy Undead which I picked as my starting bonus. Is this a known bug?

Yeah I remember when I did these campaigns I was so disappointed that the skills I set my heroes up with were wiped out. I spent a lot of time reloading and restarting to get as close to the ones as I wanted.
Then when starting the new campaigns I spent like an hour or more reloading until I got the skills close to what my heroes had before. But there were always useless ones that would pop up, and the there seemed like a finite set of possibilities for skills; I'd start so see exact repeats.
As for the question posted above me, I don't know.

Yes. This happened because you hired Gem as a hero in a previous scenario (probably Gelu's) and had her when you won the scenario. Before you win the earlier three scenarios, make sure you dismiss Gem if you hired her!
Also, the Grand Elves are a stronger bonus because they let you clear your area faster.

thank you for your answers. I did hire Gem in Gelu's scenario. I hope she still shows up for her next scheduled appearence.
I finally won the Gem and Clancy scenario, in not quite 6 months. I bounced my not-Gem PC around with expert town portal while reducing the enemy to one town. When he was down to no town, he had to attack my big army in a fully fortified town.
Now I'm playing the Crag Hack and Yog scenario. Tough, tough, tough. I know to take the two neutral towns. The enemy always shows up with armies and heroes more powerful than mine.

If stats carried over from campaign to campaign, they would have to test not just whole scenarios, not just whole campaign, but combinations of campaigns.

I don't know if Gem will show up in future scenarios. After playing the first four scenarios (Gem, Gelu, Hack, Yog), you can play either Hack and Yog's scenario or Gem and Gelu's next. If you reload a save from the end of the Gem's scenario, you should be able to select either Gem and Gelu or Hack and Yog's scenario. So you will be able to figure out right away.

Getting Expert Earth and Expert Wisdom for Expert Town Portal is a key in this campaign. Even Yog can start with Wisdom and Earth Magic if you get lucky (after about 20 restarts, I think you have to quit Heroes to reset the random number generator). In the first scenario for each hero you can build plenty of level 4 mage guilds (and Hack and Yog's levels have lots of stat-boosts).

The enemy heroes tend to have very high spell points. So if you can attack before they can build level 4/5 mage guilds, it's a lot easier. Looking at the maps and descriptions on http://www.celestialheavens.com/viewpage.php?id=300 is quite helpful.
I had a very statted up Yog with Armageddon, Summon Earth Elemental, Resurrection, Town Portal and Expert Earth/Wisdom. So I was able to clear the 250 Orc Chieftains on day 2 with nothing but a handful of Wolf Raiders in one stack (summon Earth Elemental round 1, Armageddon round 2- elementals are immune, have them defend. Round 3 Haste the Elementals, wait out the chieftains, cross the battlefield. Round 4 Meteor Swarm the middle 3 stacks and then just resurrect your Wolf Raiders before winning).
The 50,000 gold helps a lot (hire to 8 heroes at this point and collect all of the resources in your area). Take the 2 Behemoth dwellings by the "Behemoths" on the map week 1 using Expert Slow to defeat the Ancients. Build Behemoths Lairs in both castles week 1. The Seers for Thunderbirds and Cyclops Kings are great sources of additional troops.

Neither Yog nor Crag Hack have Town Portal or Resurrection in my game. They both have Expert Earth Magic, and Crag Hack has Expert Wisdom. I am facing a big upward fight against the necromancers. I captured both neutral towns, then lost the western one to Nimbus. Hopefully I can beat him. Not being able to retreat my main heroes makes things tougher.

I realise I'm bumping an older thread, but I figured it would be better than to make a new one.
I'm looking at starting a fresh run of Shadow of Death, but I am dreading the "reset" of the Heroes between campaigns. I firmly recall getting mostly useless skills for the Heroes based on what the computer considered "best" (which was quite contrary to my personal take on them ...). I'm looking at editing the save games manually, to give my Heroes the proper skills they had in the preceding campaigns.
After digging through some information on the internet, I figured that maps and savegames are actually stored as .gzip files. With WinRAR, I can even see that's the case, but whenever I try to actually extract the gzipped file, it reports a CRC error. I've tried various savegames from various campaigns (across the vanilla game and SoD), but all games give the CRC error, making it impossible to unpack them.
Is there any way to circumvent this and extract the files properly?
If it matters anything, I am running the Heroes Complete Edition version, unmodded.

Download some trainer, it should do the work.
(In case you don't know what I'm talking about, trainers can modify any hero or player resources while the game is running)

To be honest, I don't really like trainers who modify games while running.
In any case, I more or less stumbled across the answer myself, after posting my previous reply in this topic. When unpacking the file with WinRAR, you can tell it to keep the faulting files. This will unpack the files just nicely, allowing you to use a Hex editor (personal preference is Ultra Edit) to manipulate the file. I've already succesfully changed primary hero stats, now I just need to figure out how the game handles the secondary skills (already made a slight bit of progress, it shouldn't take too long to figure it out completely).
After that, I've used 7-Zip to wrap the file back up as a .gzip file, changed the extension to .CGM again. The game will recognize and load that file just fine. I don't know if I could unpack the files with 7-Zip as well, because that would make it even easier - as 7-Zip is open source and thereby freeware, which WinRAR is not.

Actually, it's not. A trainer latches on to the running process(es) in memory, changing specific memory offsets as it goes. In my experience, Heroes3 is already unstable as it is (semi-frequent crashes occur ... I think part of it may be due to Heroes3 not having been developed as a program supposed to run under Windows 7 ) and I don't want to run the risk of further destabilising it.
By making an offline modification, I only affect one savegame, rather than the game as a whole. Besides, I am kinda intrigued by how they structured their save game and find it interessing to puzzle together the various data elements stored within .

Just press the restart scenario button until you like the skills....just that easy..

Except that doesn't work. When I first played those SoD campaigns, I ended up getting like 3 or 4 different skillset permutations at most, and usually with useless skills like Eagle Eye or lacking essential skills like Wisdom on a Magic hero. And yes, I've done that a few dozen times so I could eventually identify the various different setups in the blink of an eye. As far as I recall, I even restarted the game in between attempts to force a reseed of the RNG.
