New video cards, I'm so afraid!!
I'm hoping to buy a new video card within a reasonable amount of time but as I was researching I remembered reading a thread a while back that said Heroes V hates some video cards. I can't find the thread so I'll ask again here:
I have ToTE, if I'm buying a newish card (at least GeForce GT 2xx series with 1GB memory) do I need to worry about Heroes hating it? Was that warning only for cards that came out the same time Heroes did? Please put my fears at ease!
EDIT:
I take it nobody knows of anything I need to avoid when upgrading my card since 40 people have viewed this and nobody has said anything?

I have Nvidia GeForce 7600 and it's working pretty good so you are probably fine. Afraid I do not remember anything about cards H5 dislikes..

I don't recall any of those problems with H5 but those usually refer to laptop integrated graphic cards. Since you're obviously upgrading your PC I think it's unlikely to encounter any issues.
Try checking out some graphic card benchmark sites to get an idea of how they perform.

Anything recent will run it fine. Heroes 5 even runs fine on my geforce 6150 laptop card. The 2xxx series is about 4 generations ahead of mine and Elvin's cards. It would definitely work no problem.

Thank you guys! I'm glad there is nothing to worry about. Heroes is the game I most play on my computer and I would hate to have it not work.

By the way what video card do you have now? Do you definitely have a pci-e x16 slot?

Ya, I have an NVidia 6200 right now. Not the most powerful but it ran things at least. I actually was told by people here that it wouldn't work for the game. I've built several computers and have bought several video cards in my lifetime.
I actually ended up buying a NVidia 210 for $10 from Newegg, another cheap one but for $10 if it runs older games like this I'll be happy with it. It's about 3 times more powerful than the 6200 anyway.

210 is not a gaming card, you should have gone for anything above 220. Then again, I used to run HoMM 5 on 5200 FX.

I know it isn't, but it was cheap so I decided it was worth a try. It'll take me a while to save up for a nicer one and I want to get a new processor before I get a decent video card.

Games these days relies more on graphic card than CPU speed, just keep that in mind

That reminds me, I was going to ask something related to that.
Heroes 5 is the newest game I play, and I'm not interested in playing anything newer.
The games start to slow down when I get to high unit counts (or high hero counts in Heroes, the AI takes forever with 3 or more heroes). Would a new video card speed up the game or would a new processor make a bigger difference?
My Hardware:
single core AMD Sempron at 2.7Ghz
NVidia 6200 with 256MB ram
EDIT: Just an update with the new video card, it's an EVGA with an NVIDIA 210 processor and 1GB ram, not much but considering I bought it at newegg.com for $10 I figured why not give it a try. Well, the result is that I can max out the graphics on my games (ToTE & Civ 4 are the main ones) and still get a better frame rate than I was getting with minimum settings on my old card. I think it works fine for games, they just have to be 5 years old.

If it is high unit count and the AI loading that makes it slow, then it's more likely that it's a shortage of memory. CPU is usually not that important (which is ironic, since every one seems to spend a ton of money on their CPU).

Interesting, I had assumed I had plenty of memory because the task manager says the memory usage never goes above 1.5gb (I have 2gb total). I get this info from the physical memory box in the task manager. Am I incorrect in this assumption?

No, 2 GB should be enough for H5. What OS do you use? Vista and W7 uses quite a bit of memory, especially Vista, and Mac can sometimes have some low support for games.

I'm still using XP, I am hoping to get Windows 7 sometime in the not too distant future though. I'll for sure want to get more ram when I go for that upgrade.
Also, for Veco, it surprised me but the new card really did affect how fast the game goes. I finished my Civ 4 game in no time where previously I would have to wait about one second between clicks because the game was running too slow to register more.
I imagine getting rid of the 6200's "turbo cache" feature helps a ton too. Supposedly it used system RAM as well as it's memory, which probably slowed things way down. It was another one of those super cheap deals I bought about five years ago with plans to upgrade in the future.
