Small vs. Big
What do you think should be the ratio of big creatures to small ones in each faction? By big, I of course mean those that occupy 4 squares.
If I recall correctly, in H5 every city had 3 big creatures and 4 small ones, but that doesn't seem be the law anymore.
Haven has 3 or 4 big creatures (griffon, sunboy, angel, maybe one of the two yet unrevealed).
Inferno has 1-3 big units (pit fiend, maybe juggernaut, and maybe that last unrevealed unit).
Necropolis for sure breaks the mold with its two big units (lamasu and spidergirl).
So, is variety better?
Can more small creatures of elite/champion tier upset the balance because you can fit more of them on the battlefield?

Does it even matter in a system where you can choose which units to exclude from your army?

I don't know, but size must be relevant or else it wouldn't be in the game.

of course, a treant can protect more stacks than a golem
a centaur is easier to block than about any other shooter...

All I'm saying is that you could have an army of (almost)no large units if you wanted to whether the max number of large units is 2 or 3 in the faction. Ofc in the end that will depend on which your optimal unit selection vs x opponent is.

Elvin, but I'm thinking about a situation when you mix units from different cities. In h5 you couldn't just take 7 tier 7 units because they were all big. Same thing for tier 6 IIRC. If there are small champions this could change.

As far as you can fit the entire town line-up in the starting position of the battlefield, it realy doesn't matter.

as bludgeon mentioned, he is considering that it could be possible (I really hope), and mroe than in H5 maybe, to mix creatures from different factions. So it does matter^^

But by the time you are able to recruit all the champion/seven tier units the game would most likely be over anyway.

well, one could WISH to get 3 stacks of griffins, 3 of sun riders and 1 of seraphs (and for this example they occupy 4 squares, period.). All of the same faction, so the 'you will need too many factions' argument is not THAT valid, imo. Of course you can say they are elite and champion, so that would mean splitting power and so having weak stacks. But then you must remember that we now can convert cities, so maybe the elite and champion 'resources' can (and I said maybe) make this happen without the need for so many towns. Still, I believe the balance between core/elite/champion will make it unlikely that this army is the optimum choice for Haven. End of example
If this army is not possible, I just hope it is more due to tactic restrains (having 3 griffins and 3 sun riders can be overpowered/underpowered in some way) than due to negligence of such army formation possibility.

Well, assuming there are no skills that enlarge the tactic space by 2 columns you can have 5 2x2 creatures at once. So yeah, a player who for some reason wish to field 7 2x2 creatures at once is doomed.

This is definitely one of the problems with the square system; unfortunately, I guess hexes would just look too weird for larger creatures in a 3-D engine.
They can always make the battlefield wider, but that comes with its own set of balance problems; unless they increased speed and range proportionately there could be issues.

Well I did the figures once and with large creatures now being 2 spaces wide the battlefield would have to be 16 spaces wide ([[3*2+4*1]/7]*11=15.714...) to match H3's battlefield.

I think there should be different types of sizes, or atleast they should have 2x1 for creatures such as centaurs and wolf rider.
And concerning the point of having 7 2x2 creatures on the battlefield; it would be best if you could have up to 7 stacks of creatures of any type or size on the battlefield for the sake of diversity however that might be complicated because of the size of the field. So maybe the limit to the field must be at least 14 squares in height, so that 7 number of 2x2 creatures can fit.
