A Life Outside the Box

So many things weigh on us everyday - fears, obligations, responsibilities, time, anxiety, various limitations. Being part of a family, a community, a friendly company, a business, an institution is something to be proud of, a place to belong, a cornerstone to build our own life on, a self-painted canvas of our successes, failures and experiences. A life inside the box with the interior decorated by yours truly.

But what if you could live your life outside of that box? If you could live your life without any ties or obligations, without having to work or pay the bills what would you really do? Where would you go? More importantly how different would you be from the person you are right now?

Personally I am not so sure what I would do. Part of what makes life so exciting is that you never know what will happen next, when you will meet the people that matter in your life, when you will realize the mistakes you have been making all along, when it's time to embrace new ideas or interests. Sometimes all it takes is the right time and place, other times it can be the product of lengthy inner search but either way it's hard to tell where you will end up. It's all about the journey and not the destination after all.

But if I had to start somewhere.. I'd love to go traveling, see new things. I am naturally curious but also believe that the more doors you open the more chances for personal growth there will be. Living in a city offers many comforts and I am used to its pace of life but there is something missing. A number of things actually.
Also there are a number of people I'd like to meet sometime

Another thing I'd be interested in learning and experiencing are the alternative treatments and philosophies. The concept of auras, ki, prana and other can be fascinating. Some things are not easy to explain and are better to see and feel for yourself. Even after all this time it is surprising how little we know of the potential our mind and body have. What skills and abilities are possible to develop. Or how many misconceptions we carry about what we can or cannot do.

For that very reason I am interested in martial arts. A good workout can make you feel good but there is so much more to it. Self-defense skills are definitely useful but even they cannot compare to the satisfaction of creativity and self-improvement. It is this personal touch that elevates their worth, there are countless ways to learn and discover. It's different for everyone and what you learn is yours and yours alone. Learn the way, then find your own. There are a number of arts I would like to try sometime if only out of curiosity but right now I'm satisfied with aikido.

Speaking of arts I sometimes miss my earlier creative days. Drawing, making replicas, painting miniatures. For the time being I am glad I can express my creativity in other ways, who knows maybe the spark will ignite again before too long.

What lies outside your own box?

The only thing that would be different about my life is that I wouldn't do much homework or worry about exams. Other than that, I would prefer to live life mostly the same as I do now.

I agree with Mvass, at least a little; there are few things I enjoy more than simply being able to relax and take things easy. Being able to do that, or even at the moment just take classes I enjoy to learn about things I liked rather than being forced to take them for grades, would be great. I do feel like the point of education is often lost these days. Far too many kids, at least where I come from, get good grades for the sake of good grades and not much else. There's no interest in learning for the sake of it for a lot of people; they've been conditioned by the "meatgrinder" of schools to simply work and spit out good grades without really caring about what it is that they do. That's a huge disappointment in my eyes, and I feel being able to live "outside the box" would be a great step towards getting rid of that. Being able to enjoy learning rather than tolerate it would be a big step forward.

That said, something I would really love to do is travel around and see some parts of the world, especially Europe. I'm a huge history buff, and being able to visit the sites I've only been able to read about and see them for myself would be incredible.

I'd also love to write; I do a bit nowadays and I really enjoy it but I doubt it's anything I'd be able to make a career out of. Being able to simply write for fun without having to worry about responsibilities would be amazing.

I think all of the difference for me would be mostly about purpose. I think I would be pretty much the same man but I would completely rattle my own cage (the box) and get out and do some good things for people instead of just thinking about them and being afraid to try

Well, I tried to talk Art and had what 3 takers? I thought "All the creativity and wit that I've seen here?, a broad-view discussion about Art should get a firestorm going. Just shows what I don't know.

I just remembered something J. B. Priestly (reporter) said in an interview on World at War. "He said something to this effect in referring to the "Brits and Art" during WWII; " I had never seen such a public interest and awareness concerning the Arts, the people had never been like it before and I am sad to say...nor like it since" the interview was in the early 70s.

Travel around the world, definately. See as many interesting places as I want to see, which is a lot. But unfortunately I would probably have to do it myself, as I have few friends. They are mostly busy. Experience the finer things in life, like brandy, whiskey, beer, cheeses, coffee, french cuisine, italian food and so on.

I have been dreaming of the day when Im financially free, but that day has yet to come. We are all caught in the cycle of work and work except for a fortunate few. I've been very miserable struggling with my financial difficulties and life problems all these years. All I ask for is to let me win the lottery once. Just once. It is so very bloody important to me!

Life is never fair. I may never win the damn thing, I may continue to struggle, but what can I do? I can only tell myself "tomorrow will be better," when In fact its not true.

I'd probably be a wanderer. Living as I please. Going as I come. Going around the world. Learning languages, cultures and peoples. Observing life. Going to all those small villages around the world no one ever visits. The himalayan mountain tops, the amazon and kongo jungles, the siberian and mongolian steppes. The locals would always wonder what kind of weird chap he is, coming here on his own will. Then I'd entertain the youngesters by telling them about the world beyond. Maybe giving someone a dream to travel himself one day. Then after some time I'd go on the road again. See where my feet take me. What would be the next place where I'd spend the winter. Then when I was 80 I'd come back to my hometown and see how it has changed. I'd settle somewhere nice near a lake and fish all the days till I die whining about how finnish people are arrogant snows and if the country wasn't so amazing I'd never have come back but what I really wanted would be to die home. That's the kind of life I'd go on living. No attachments, just memories.

Would I really have changed as a person?
Of course, we are, afterall, the sum of our experiences. My experiences would have been totally different so I would have been diffrent though I believe some characteristics would stay the same. I'd propably still be stubborn and laid back.

Just too bad life is so short.

In a world without responsability we'd be all alone. I have a hard time imagining any other way wee could live without consequences towards others. Still though, I make up my own responsabilities. I set up the rules for me, so that I can make this world a better place for others. That is my strength, my weakness and my purpose. Without it I'd be lost. I'd be nothing.

EDIT: I think this post became somewhat hard to believe for most people. I'd just like to confirm it.

EDIT2: This is propably because I am outside the box already. I have the power of insight and it is my greatest and most precious one.

Out of box is what I'm usually trying to do every day. I'm not really that amazed by from-nine-to-five daily routine -__- If it wasn't for college, I"d probably finish my book by now, get back to solid martial arts training... maybe even make that bicycle tour around Europe. Who knows.

If I had infinite time and zero responsibility....

I would live in a cloister for a year or two.
I'm not religious, I just feel it would be interesting, to see how I would react to live in such a "boring/spiritual" environment for a long time. It would also be interesting from a historical perspective as I'm extremely interested in medieval Europe.

I might think of other things to do as well but...

I guess I would either do nothing or travel randomly. I think I would aim for small villages rather than big cities, I imagine life would be better there, less polution, less stress, possibly friendlier people?

I dont know, that is a tough one.
I could not see myself being different if i did not have the problems I have now with my own obigations.
Naturally being raised by single parents, I learned 2 different views of who I am & how I should be. How to treat people & myself.

I would love to help people with their problems if i can.
Sometimes i give out great advice but do i ever follow them? Not really lol.

I always wanted to visit many countries in this world.
I am scared of spiders & compared of the spiders out there, I would probably do a nice dance if i saw a 1 inch spider lol.

I would also love to live my life in vegas & go to the clubs, play poker & blackJack for fun. Since i been playing poker since i was 5 years old (Not when Chris moneymaker won it & caused a riptide in the game).

If we had no obligations, stress, snxiety & the works. We might be able to live over 120 years old & not have a single white hair

Personally i would find life boring if there was not.
There has to be stress, arguments, anxiety & all the other BS that goes with it for me to keep life interesting.
It would just be so boring, if you just lived life & things just fell the way you want them to.
I would love to find a lady, have a family etc & have some complications. Both of us might find it plain if things just fell too perfect!

Keep the arguments out of here please

Something to put things into perspective, where do your priorities lie? Career, a significant other, interests etc.

As much as I'd love to pursue my personal interests and learn more I would start doing something before too long. Even if the money were not really needed, I just can't stay idle and feel I must do something

I've always considered work as the means to an end - You have some goals, you need money, you work to get them. Of course it can be highly rewarding in more than one ways as long as you like what you are doing. Obviously half-hearted work gets you nowhere, unless you take some care with what you are doing it is not going to be appreciated nor will it mean much. I also the significance of a career is not to be overlooked, it is a personal accomplishment that speaks volumes. However I find ridiculous the lengths some people will go to serve their career. Sometimes you can't help but wonder, is the price really worth it?

The people I love are obviously very important to me. I'd drop whatever I was doing if I felt they needed my support.
