Ultimate Necropolis

I'm quite dissapointed by H6 necropolis,as necropolis is my favourite town in all heroes games.I think the green isn't the best choice for necropolis,h6 ghoul isn't proportional and it looks quite funny.Lich must be a skeleton like everytime it was,now it looks like a old sick man who have a theet problem

The history so far:
Heroes II

Heroes III

Heroes IV

Heroes V

Heroes VI

Dramatically changes:
Heroes II-Necropolis Appear
Heroes III-Mummies are gone,Wight/Wraith and Black Knight/Dread Knight
enter appear
Heroes IV-Inferno and Necropolis are fusioned,Zombies,Wraiths and Dread Knights are gone
Heroes V-classic necropolis again,Black Knight/Dread Knight is replaced by Wight/Wraith
Heroes VI-dramatically change in necropolis, ghoul, fate spinner and lamasu appear

Creatures linked with necropolis:

Corpses:
Zombie/Ghoul/Walking Dead/Plague Zombie/Grave Ghoul/Rotten Zombie/Mutant Zombie/Revenant/Lamasu/Putrid Lamasu

Skeletons:
Skeleton Archer/Skeleton Warrior/Skeletal Mage/Skeletal Spearman/Bone Guard/Skeletal Rider/Lich/Archlich/Bone Dragon

Spirits:
Ghost/Spectre/Ghast/Phantom/Grave Orb/Shade/Shadown/Ghost Dragon/Spectral Dragon

Divine reperesentants:
Fate Spinner/Fate Weaver

Entities:
Wight/Wraith/Reaper/Wraith Dragon

Others:
Death Knight/Dread Knight/Vampire/Vampire Lord/Nosfreatu/Mummy

The Nercopolis line-up for H6 is the best yet imo
the only thing I don't like with is is the vampires that looks Arthas-wannabe-like and that all the units have gotten themselves radiated by tiberium.

Best of the best are the lamasu and fate spinner

Edit: just saw your last line, haha well
I'll be back....

Edit2: of course, sorry

Jabanoss, may I ask you not to use the word gay to embody the horribleness that is the Sauron-wannabe design of the vampire? I'm sure there's plenty of choices in your vast vocabulary.

Anyway, I really like the way Necropolis is going. The whole rugged, slightly decomposing and ever soulless style feels very nice. The upgraded vampire (and to some extent the unupgraded as well) is the exception. I wish they'd either make it a pure aristocrat or a pure beast, not some kind of vampire knight...

Awesome thread! Someone make a similar to for the others please! I love such comparisons

I gotta say... erm. Dang. I like em all, somehow H2, H3 and H6 had the best lineups IMO.

I agree with Lizard Warrior. Indeed alot of red thread units through all of the different versions and some mostly left out and some that really shouldnt be there, sinze its an army.

Red thread units

Skeletons
Zombies
Vampires
Ghosts/Wraiths/Wights/Spectres
Liches
Bone Dragons

Outcasts, those that should have had more spotlight

Death Knights. HELLO?? Oh wait was it because there would be too many knights, since Castle/Knight/Haven had some kind of knights too??

Mummies. C'mon might not have been fitting regading the certain Necropolises theme all the time, but really?

Ghouls (instead of Zombies). These things really are more intelligent than Zombies and could be mind controlled by their masters. Their intelligence are hampered only by their everlasting and insane hunger for flesh and such. They got potential.

Unworthy, unlogical, failures. Neutral unit potentional though

Zombies. Brain dead, slow and boring (at least in HOMM, imo). Nothing more than lame cannon fodder and we got Skeletons for that!

Bone dragons - Remember the BD's in H2 and H4? Those looked frightening and purely looked like flying beings of death. But they got WORSE in some games. They were bland but kinda ok regarding stats in H3. Worthless and too expensive in H5. Good riddance, you bony shadows of your former selves, good riddance!

Wight/Wraith (H5, Grim Reaper wannabees) To obious in the Necropolis setting, even more cliche than Vampires and all others represent DEATH just as good, if not better. Dont touch me, you've had your chances.

Vampires - Hold your horses, its because they look less like the classic/frightening vamps we know and love and more like Arthas/Twilight wimpy handsomes. The good news is that, well the vampire in H6 at least looks a bit better than the one in H5.

But these are just my opinions.

Personally I only like vampires in Heroes if they indeed do look like the more creature-like H3 ones. A little bit like bats.

These vile beasts are experiments of the necromancers which bound corpses from hyena's with those of giant rats.

Thank you thank you thank you!
I google around to find something like this without any result.
If I were to post ideas and proposals then I want this unit to replace the vampire. It could have the life drain just as the vampire ability to maintain the gameplay, but otherwise I rather have a creature like this.
(note that the vampire could still be heroes which would fit them much better.)

I'm pretty sure most of the oldest vampire myths have vampires as ugly feral beasts, with the handsome vampire seducer archetype being rather recent. Egyptian style undead don't really seem to fit with how the Necropolis are being presented, it's all rather western. Some kind of bloodthirsty wolf type thing would be nice.

I'm actually happy with ALL Necropolises so far, including the H6 one.
However I find some aesthetically disgusting things in it:

-Lack of the classic Vampire Bat moving animation for Vampire, now they teleport, which looks dreadful and inappriopriate.

-Vampire looks stupid (they should return to the H2 and H4 look)

-Vampire attacks with a sword, which is NOWHERE AS CLIMATIC AND SUITABLE as the life suction attack from H4 (or even the scratch from H2 and H3)

-Liches look more like Harpies instead of powerful undead magicians (although I don't really mind their H6 look that much)

-As much as I love the Fate Spinner, the absence of my favourite Bone Dragon is really a shame - I hope it returns as a neutral at least .

-The Lamassu is a great idea that looks like an undead Manticore...OK...but WTH did they do to its face?! I was heartbroken when I saw they gave it some boring humanoid face instead of a COOL LION ONE.

-Green is a good colour for Necropolis IMO, but whoa, that's just a bit too much.

Apart from that, I LOVE H6 Necropolis. My personal favourite was always the Bone Dragon, but the developers removed it (at least from the town ), so now I really am AMAZED by the new Ghost I love that they made it clearly female (like in H2) and it's design is beautiful. I'm happy that they replaced the fat Zombie with the Ghoul. The Skeleton looks better than ever (though I hate the new name ), and The Fate Weaver (as much as I'm angry for it taking my B.Dragon's place) looks BEAUTIFUL and ORIGINAL

Anyone agree with me on my complaints and praises?

Second thing, the Lamasu.Honestly, why not call it necro lama?

Third thing, vampires. They look too much like arthas,in a bad way.
i mean,wow gets anywhere.Next time,we will see this as a vampire concepts

Lastly, there is no grim reaper,AKA wight. They could have been necro chapions,or angels of death or sorta.

My idea for Necro line-ups

Here's my idea for 3 alternative Necro line-ups, based around dividing Necropolis into 3 factions: Vampires, Mummies/Tomb Kings and Ghosts:

Vampire Necropolis, the Estate:

Core: Ghoul, Night Swarm (a flock of bats), Dire Wolf (a huge and hideous wolf transformed through ingestion of Vampire blood)
Elite: Duke (a Vampiric knight, similar to current H6 Vampire), Concubine (a fast and deadly female Vampire), Iron Maiden (a moving coffin with the ability to heal and resurrect Vampiric units, attacks with bloodied spikes)
Champion: Patriarch (an old and powerful Vampire, looks like H3 Vampire, casts spells)

Mummy Necropolis, the Pyramid:

Core: Tomb Locust, Skeletal Guard (like H6 Skeleton), Husk (the drained corpses of thirst victims, like lesser Mummies)
Elite: Bone Golem (with an Anubis mask and a massive blade), Lich, Mummy
Champion: Sphinx (liek H6 Lamasu)

Ghostly Necropolis, the Haunting:

Core: Shade, Spirit (a ranged unit shooting spectral chains to tear her enemies), Revenant (a possessed suit of armor)
Elite: Wraith (a mana-feeding, spellcasting Ghost), Headless Horseman (a deadly, scythe-carrying ghostly rider), Banshee (has an area attack)
Champion: The Lost (a shadowy mass of screaming and insane spirits)

Opinions about my Necropolises?

H6 is my favorite Necropolis.

First things first, I'm glad they got rid of the Bone Dragons, I always thought they were boring. In my Necropolis wishlists, top tier was always something like ANGEL OF DEATH / GRIM REAPER. An appearance similar to the Wight / Wraith of H5 but with wings. But I have to admit that the Fate Spinner is an even better idea since it's so lore friendly to the world of Ashan, and quite refreshing to see an original creature too.

Personally I don't care two cents about the new H6 looks.

Of course the -quality- of the artwork is good, but the units themselves are abso-fricking ridiculous and look like something a 22 year old newbie would come up to compete with the current day trend of "It must look SO cool that it actually looks overdone and bad". And then his supervisor came up and said "no no! You gotta add more awesum random spikes dewd!"

As it is I feel I'm not the target audience for this new game, I'm too old being 24.

Sorry, but the creatures look WAY too retarded and detailed for a generic representatation of a unit. Fail design, no matter the quality of the work.

Honestly, Excruciator? Juggernaut? They look like something random a 14 year old dipsnow would come up with. Random monsters don't belong in HoMM, period.

Quote:

Lamassu are creatures from Persian mythology that actually have human faces. Do your homework instead of assuming it's something random they came up with, although in light of other beings in their work I can't blame you for making that assumption.

Lamassu are actually something I would compliment them on. Of all H6 necro units they look the least retarded.

Well I disagree, I really adore the homm6 necropolis, so damn original and cool!

What are zombies and ghouls more than "human imagination",every one have a different opinions about the difference between |zombie| and |ghoul|,zombies are much more known in urban mythology than ghouls,so the term of "zombie" have more popularity than "ghoul".

If I want to make a game,in my personal "mythology",I can see zombies more powerful than ghouls, depends on my taste. If I think the term of "zombie" is to common and not special,I can just rename the creature from "zombie" to "ghoul".But if in my mind I imagine ghouls more agile than zombies,I will change also the model.

But creatures are affected by CLASSICISM,the people can't imagine a creature more than the "classic" one.If I show to some HoMM fans a griffin with lion head and eagle body, they will say it's wrong, even the greek mytholgy agree this(griffins can have eagle head and lion body or vice-versa).

I can name a creature randomly,let's say Aquiz.If I just say the name,without image or description,they don't understand.If I show it in a line-up:
1.Skeleton-Skeleton Gladiator
2.Zombie-Ghoul
3.Aquiz-Horror Aquiz
4.Vampire-Vampire Count
5.Ocultist-Lich
6.Dead Rider-Fallen Knight
7.Reaper-Grim Reaper
They will understand it's an undead. If I also add some abiltiies Aquiz(undead, skeletal, fossilised),they will understand it's a skeletal creature.

But if add a story, they will understand perfectly what it's it.
When the necromancers arrived in Herresh, they found remains of strange creatures from ancient times,it was a combination between a mammal and a reptile, with canine and raptor features. They died thousands years ago,so their bones are fossilised.

After 2-3 succeful games,it will enter in CLASSICAL CREATURES,there will won't be fan, which won't know about Aquiz and if I will drop it from the line-up,fans will be dissapoint.

That's the CLASSICISM,if there will be Heroes 8 and lamasu, fate spinner etc. will still be in it,they will become "classic" creatures.

posted December 27, 2010 01:37 PM

when it comes to the undead, I really see several interpretations someone could approach it with. there are probably more, but these are the ones that I've encountered so far.

minion interpretations

1. spirits- ghosts, poltergeists, banshees. cold and untouchable.
2a. the rotting- zombies and the recently dead. invariably squishy.
2b. the plague- zombies and the recently dead with plague twists. more squishy and often oozing something horrible
2c. frankenstien-o-rama- Zombies and the recently dead cut up and messed about with by mad scientists.
3. the desert- the dried dead, mummies and other mummified creatures. often linked with droughts rather than diseases.
4. the purified- skeletons, bones etc, generally white and with masters who are obsessed with purity of bone.
5. "Hi, we're hungry"- the raving uncontrollable vampires. possibly some fast zombies.
6. the frosties- the cold dead, those who die in winter and are the enemy of all life etc etc.

controller interpretations
1. the aristocratic dead- vampires or some variation of that.
2. "THEY LAUGHED AT MEEEEEEEE!!!!!!"- the spurned necromancers who want revenge. can also be fit in with gods, in the case of the Discipleverse.
3. the koffin klux klan- individuals who think that there is purity in death... or similarly motivated by some kind of higher purpose to kill everyone and make them undead.
4. My ancient kingdom- yeah, even if in death, megalomaniacs are still megalomaniacs. invariably ancient kings will want to reclaim their lands and raise the dead to do so. often linked with some kind of wizard/priest king.
5. my undead love-... basically people who raise their loved ones in order to still be with them, even if they are... past their prime. I remember a friend writing a story about how a female wizard had her entire family slaughtered by an invading army, so she became a necromancer to revived her family from the dead. They ate her, but it's still a rather interesting motivation beyond "Mwahaha, I is evil".
6. "death is cheap, so we shall make it permanent."- the black lantern motivation, orchestrated by some ancient god or egregore that wants to stop people from abusing the revolving door of the afterlife. needless to say, being a comic book geek, this is probably one of the more interesting reasons why the dead are rising and going after people.

note that all of the interpretations can be combined any way that seems fit, but there are some controller interpretations that work better with certain minion interpretations more than others.

and naturally, if there are any more, please post them here.
