Samech the Skeleton
Okay, recently (almost a year ago), I discovered the world of creating games. Since then I have been developing this small game
called Samech the Skeleton. It is a game where you are a Skeleton named Samech, and your mission is to collect and eat as many brains
as you can. Sounds easy, eh? Well, it isn't. On your way you will face many dangers and puzzles that you have to solve. So I ask you to
join the adventures of this bloodthirsty Skeleton and help him in his long journey! The game currently has 21 levels, but I plan to do as
many as I am able to.
Latest version of the game:
v.0.5.3, Size: 1.49Mb
DOWNLOAD
The reason why I'm posting this is that I want to hear your opinions of the game. Please try it and tell me what would you like to see or
what is done wrong or could be done better. I had really fun making the game, and I hope you guys have fun playing it
If you do download and play it, I recommend to first read the Intructions inside the game, it will help a lot.
I bet you can't beat my high score!
And here are some previews of the game:

Played up to redstone castle.
Few ideas.
Controls, the controls need to be more responsive. Now they work with lag and the skeleton kind of slides afterwards. With maps like the fireballs and skeleton dodging ones you need good control, now it can be annoying.
Was the bouncing off walls purposeful?
I had to keep checking on which brains were which blame my bad memory but wouldn't it be clearer if you used different one for bad items?
There was an item that was a trap(as in you could not get back to the path to goal) in the arrows all around map, purposeful?

I'll try to do something for that, maybe if Sam could move freely in the rooms, not aligned to the squares?
Quote: Was the bouncing off walls purposeful?
Yes, but I must admit that it's annoying when moving up and down, but it doesn't mind when moving left and right. He has to bounce back to the square he was previously, 'cause he's aligned to the squares.

Sure, that's a good idea

Yes, you can't get the other one.

Hmmm, might work. It might be part of that why he moves like he does since he can't get out of the movement he is currently in.
I'd wait for more people to test it out before making changes though.
Just checked that the one brain wasn't a bug.

Sorry for being off topic, but you wrote it's only a year ago you started this project? May I ask what you've read, what you knew already, etc.? (I myself have a similar interest).

Yeah, I too wonder what program you're using, it's not Flash is it? Don't look like it anyway. Anyway I thought it seemed good. Very nice job, so far atleast, some minor issues that have been pointed out though. But good job.

Yes, almost a year. When I started I didn't know anything and had read nothing about making games. I had always been interested in programming and game making, so one day I stumbled across this tool called Game Maker. This program will actually help you a lot in writing games, but it'll take some practise to master it. It will help you in all the basic commands, but you still have to be able to write some basic scripts. With the program you can make almost any kind of game imaginable. If you decide to give the tool a try, I recommend to read some of the guides first, they will help a lot.
Thanks to everyone for the positive comments, it really means a lot
Well, has anyone beaten my high score?

Ah, just as I suspected
Game Maker is a great tool to learn basic programming concepts. I've been tinkering with it every now and again for almost as long as I've been a member of HC, but I have never completed anything worthwhile
At least by now I know how variables, loops and arrays work
EDIT: Game Maker also has a large community that's always buzzing with new stuff! Here's a sample of what 2010 brought us.
EDIT2: I just noticed that the game I'm currently reviewing for a Polish indie games website is in there - I didn't think it was a GM game, and it's a pleasant surprise

Yes, I was also very suprised about the millions of possibilities when I started, the games made with Game Maker can be really amazing
@Edit, the latest version avaiable for download at the moment is version 0.5.2, edited the first post.
Changes:
* 1 new level, now there's 21
* Levels 18 and 19 are remade
* Much better saving and loading
(now possible to have multiple saves)
* Some tiles and walls also remade

Uh, have skimmed through the thread but never found it posted. Is pressin' SPACE for skipping levels purposeful?
EDIT: Also, one of the levels seems to have an invisible wall. Purposeful?

I use the key when testing levels, so I can skip to the end. I seem to have forgotten to remove it from the game

spoiler alert
Level 18 should be redone. Cause it is very easy to abuse it without losing points, gaining as many lives as possible for later levels.
---
Kind of annoying although probably preplanned - levels with bouncing flame/ice balls is pretty much all (too) luck-based.
Could not extend my high scores beyond any of the two.
Kudos for the arrow levels, they are beyond awesome

I just realized that, too, I'll remake it

Yup, they're the most annoying ones IMO, too, but that's what makes them good.
Quote: Could not extend my high scores beyond any of the two.
The record (622) was played after I created the executable, so no cheats
Quote: Kudos for the arrow levels, they are beyond awesome
I really like them, too, but my favourite level is still 15, the level where Sam has to push the boxes to get to the goal. Simple, but I like it.
Quote: Also, one of the levels seems to have an invisible wall. Purposeful?
Oh you mean level 6, yes, the wall is there to fool the player. The real way to the goal is through the secret passage.

Oh man, it has been a while, all the files have been deleted, I was just starting to understand GM. I DO work from time to time on another project, which has less pixels and color and is more professional (meaning that no longer do I use drag & drop, but write the game by hand). Perhaps I'll create a thread later today or tomorrow, if I find the time. Been busy lately, as you may have noticed. The game is waaay different and is designed for hot seat 2 players. (But will include SP campaigns). Samech is dead.

Man, it'd be nice to get involved in some relatively simple GM handiwork again. Too bad that since I upgraded to Windows 7, I lost access to my registered copy of Game Maker 6.1. Oh well!
