Neverwinter Nights vs. Baldur's Gate
Simple question:
Is the Neverwinter Nights series as good as the Baldur's Gate series?

I don't think so. Never played NWN1, actually, but I did complete NWN2. Main problem with NWN2 is that it gets very boring around 60% game completion and stays so until the very end. The expansion, MotB has great plot, but it's really easy, not just for power gamers but pretty much for everybody else, (sad trend for epic level expansions). Never tried Storm of Zehir, maybe because re-doing the same thing as in NWN2 vanilla, only without epic levels being possible to reach, isn't really my cup of tea.
BG's strength nowadays comes mainly from fantastic mods that fix bugs, provide a lot of interesting lucre and adjust difficulty rating. If you have to decide between those two, I'd rather get some good mods for BG2 and play it instead

I'd rank the Neverwinter Games on par with BG1. BG2 is in its own league for its splendid atmosphere and dialogues, and incredible antagonist.

Which ones?
Reason I asked is because I was thinking about playing through BG again, but I never played NWN I/II so was wondering if they would be worth it.

I never played Neverwinter Nights, but I heard of it's story and based on that... NOPE!
Besides, it's has been established since 1995 or so that Baldur's Gate will forever be the BEST game ever made. I hope that someday they just revamp the game in a more modern (read: 3D) enviroment that would work on the more modern operating systems. (but all the rest, NPCs, voice-overs, dialogues, storylines, map areas, equipment, etc, remain the same of course) That would not only be cool... but if would attract a new and young audience.
Srsly, Bioware should hire me as a marketing manager ^_^

NWN1 is BORING, the expansions are better but not on BG level.
NWN 2 is a whole different case though, especially the expansion is interesting. Definitely worth playing.

BG and NWN
If you never played NWN, trying NWN2 for the story wouldn't be bad, but keep in mind that the game is long and, as I mentioned earlier, rather boring.
Has some brilliant party banters though. Keep Sand in team, he's hilarious.

First and foremost, BGT (Baldur's Gate Trilogy) that combines all the BGs into a single game on BG2 engine (lovely to play from level 1 from Candlekeep and have a sense of completion)
next you should get:
G3 Fix pack/Baldurdash (removes all the bugs from game)
Ascension (official mod, made by Bioware employee, spices up the ending of ToB)
Unfinished Business (adds on a lot of stuff planned to be included but removed from game release)
Quest Pack (More fun)
Banter Pack (For those who love the official NPCs)
G3 Tweak pack (Alter the most annoying features of the game like Cloak of Mirroring's visual effect and buzzing sound)
I also really like Imoen Romance, as stated many times A great storyline and fun interaction. Sometime in the future there will be a remastered version of SoA romance and a ToB part of the romance, but right now it's just SoA romance. Still great though.
finally, SCS (Sword of the Coast Stratagems) I and II to greatly improve the game's difficulty.

Is there also a Haer'Dalis romance mod? I'd be very curious of someone made the attempt (and I'm growing tired of having every female character Romancing Anomen all the time)

NWN with HotU expansion really worth a try but it's a fact that BG is far better than NWN.
I played BG1-2 with their expansions, IWD1-2 and NWN with it's expansions and I liked BG2 and BG2-ToB the most!
But NWN really, I mean REALLY worth a try!
Afterall, know someone about planscape? Is it possible to obtain that game nowadays? And I mean in legal ways 'cause Black Isle RPG-s worth it

LOOOOL @ the though of Edwin romancing anymore. It would be interesting to see whether he is as red-blooded as his cloak (and is willing to take in my PC onboard towards an erotic onslaught)

Neverwinter Nights 2 boring? No way! Long but entertaining to the end. Icewind Dale... Now that was boring! Not NWN2.
I'd say: Neverwinter Nights 2 > Baldur's Gate > Baldur's Gate II > Neverwinter Nights > ........ > Icewind Dale.
But the difference between NWN2 and the first BG is very minor. I could just turn it the other way around if I was to play BG again.
Anyway, Fallout series are better than the lot of them!
By the way, I play NWN2 with the console command for 12 member party, so I can have all companions with me. That's making the game worth playing over and over for me, to listen to my companions complaining or praising me for my course of actions. I especially love ganging up on Qara with Sand.

The whole Arvahn Area/Gem mines/such was dreadfully boring and repetitive. The most fun parts were:
-Ember trial
-Ammon Jerro stronghold
-Destroyed... well, don't want to spoil.
Ember trial was fun, Jerro's stronghold was intimidating, destroyed town was depressing.

Indeed the Arvahn area was tiresome. But that's the only boring part I can think of. The quest in the Ghellu's stronghold was nice though, had fun making dealings between tribes Ogres, Orcs and Bugbears and choosing sides. Unfortunately though there's this bug that won't let you kill Ralidor, which ruined it for me because I always like killing in the end all parties involved.
The Trial, building the Crossroad Keep and Jerro's Haven are indeed the most fun parts of the game. Especially the Trial, I so love humiliating Torio Claven. And Mount Galadrym too, now that was epic!

NWN is great and worth playing through, Corribus. Lots of content and the expansions are amazing. There are also some fantastic mods for the game, especially the Stormy Night/Narcopolis/Wake triology.
NWN2 is very good but not as good as the original. The story and character creation are much better, as well as the graphics (obviously). The first expansion, Mask of the Betrayer, is fantastic. The second expanion, Storm of Zehier, plays a lot differently than the first two and focuses more on team dynamics than story.
While I dearly love the Baldur's Gate series, I always think it's good to try new games.
As to some of the other D&D-esque games mentioned, just my 2 cents:
-Icewind Dale: Follows 2.5 and is confusing after following 3rd edition for so long. I never got very far in it because I'm terrible at it.
-Icewind Dale 2: Played before IWD. It's more stream-lined that the original and follows 3.5 rules, so it's more user-friendly. The story takes a back-seat to tactics. Lots of options for character creation, especially for clerics.
-The Temple of Elemental Evil: It's been years since I've played it but I remember the graphics being quite good. The levels are kept low, 10 max, so the game is tougher than some of the others. It's traditional. Very traditional. For example, you're just better off not having a Paladin in your party because of all the restrictions he'll face. I never completed it. Can't remember why.
-Planescape: Torment: Not mentioned but just got buy it if you haven't already. It blows BG2 and NWN out of the water. Don't question it. Seriously, why are you still reading this? Go to GOG.com and buy it already!
