The Heroes IV stories were just well-told, that's all. If you start dissecting them, you'll find a lot to complain about (much less than in Heroes V though). Academy is about a Hollywood-type innocent-girl-that-did-not-want-to-be-a-queen who saves the world (and screws Solmyr's image while doing it, at least as far as I can tell), Necropolis - about some pariah that suddenly becomes the head of Necromancers and Kreegans alike and ultimately saves the world, Preserve - about some cheesy, dramatic love story, Haven - about knights in shining armours doing good things and Asylum - about a pirate girl-captain who starts commanding Efreeti and Black Dragons without much explanation and ultimately... does not save the world but kills her first mate. Never played with Stronghold, they were incredibly boring in Heroes IV. Nothing stunning or amazing but all of these stories were well-written and despite their obvious flaws managed to keep you interested (some of them more than the others though).

There's always Dark Messiah, if you want to experience the setting from an entirely different perspective.
It's just about as laden with one-dimensional characters and clichés as HoMM V was though (IMO).

The Heroes II-III stories had its main plots but contained myraids of sub-plots and even sub-plots within sub-plots.
Just the layers of lore including the Tatalia/Krewlod rivalry, the Erathian wars with Nighon, Deyja and the Kreegans, the story of Gelu (half human half vori elf) etc. etc.
Ashan just feels very generic and surfacy.

Overall it's a perfect game aside from:
Glories Seraphims sisters and every other thing relating weak womans that if fighting they die horribly (what some sexy body lost  )
The new townscreens since heroes V brought the great townscreens in 3d
The lack of resources
The lack of mages c'mon i want to have some titans and pwn some black dragons... oh wait a second there aren't Black dragons... GRAAAH BURN EVERYTHING WHERE ARE THE DRAGONS WHEN YOU NEED ONE .
So tell me a fantasy game with no mages and no dragons can be called like that NO IMHO and finally the dungeon should be like the heroes III one (Yay i'm complaining like a stupid H3 fan).
Ok you got it this game needs to be modded immediatly after it's release

I agree with Avirosb. Yeah, let us throw those away.
And let's throw away games while we're at it. Games are so 90's. Books is where the future is.
And computers. I mean everybody and their grandma has a computer nowadays. The in-crowd has already passed that. Let's throw thems away too.

I like Dragons, especially black ones, as bosses but not necessarily hireable creatures.
Instead I'd like to see Dragon Whelps hireable as Elite creatures.
Let's not forget that Dragons are supposed to be intelligent, and therefore cannot be mind controlled, etc. Its this reason that mature dragons shouldn't be hired and blindly following a leader. I prefer them to be lurking in a cave or flying overhead creating havoc!

She just thinks they are overused and overrated. I partly agree however Heroes is a game that is supposed to be filled with classic fantasy creatures, so I think Dragons of some sort are a good addition.
If nothing else, but as a fan service...

I think that some parts of the game shouldn't be removed. I don't want the Black Dragons as a boss. I want to be recruitable. Many creatures are iconic for series. I don't say that there shouldn't new creatures. Just some have to present. Otherwise this won't be heroes anymore.

The fact that Dragons are getting "promoted" to boss status along with various other giant and truly terrifying beasts (and possibly androgynous hateful angels) actually specifically counteracts the overuse.
I already said this loads of times about HoMMV but Dragons suffer from the "Law of conservation of ninjutsu"
That is, there is a finite and static amount of ninjutsu, the more ninjas there are the less intimidating/powerful/interesting/relevant each ninja is, because their ninjutsu is being diluted and shared.

Less Dragons = Good Dragons.
More Dragons = Bad Dragons.
Actually though, you can be very original with dragons, I'd like to direct attention to Breath of Fire III and Breath of Fire IV for some interesting dragon designs and abilities.

Ironic as your post might have been, the sad irony is that they actually HAVE made away with pretty much all the creatures you mention - cf. my highlight.
