There were a very brutal french execution method in the middle-age. The victims are hanged over with his head poind down to the ground and was naked. Then slowly crushed his nuts. The pain was so enormous that the victim can't even cry or made any sounds just vomiting 'cause the pain. The process was lethal but triggered a very slow and painful death. Such executions were the perfect terror demonstrations as the sound of the , hmmm, "nut-cracking" was similar than a breaking bone. The sounds and the view together caused shock even in the watchers hearth.
Or there were another painfully execution when the victim were literally sawed into two from the scrotch to the head. Or there were the famous persian method were the victim were encased in a hollow trunk that didn't let him\her move. Then he forced to eat and drink regularily while can't urinate or pooing so everything started to rot within the body. That of course attracted the vermins what finally eat up the unlucky victim at the end.
And these are just a few examples from the humanity's twisted and barbaric execution methods... All of them existed only for cause really painfull and terrible death...
EDIT:
The best way to die is quick and as painless as it is possible. I hope I will die like this: quick and painless...

death by suffocation isn't a pretty sight btw, despite what many people could think...

what about dying of exhaustion in a concentration camp? I doubt it is the most painful, but it is a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong death.

Back in time I registered to some unknown site, Ogrish.com, which slowly became the big reference for shocking videos or images. Basically you can find inside everything that show how barbaric are humans. Today the site is closed to new registrations, but I can tell you, from what I've seen, the most horrible deaths are when you are innocent. Not surprisingly, most barbaric executions and tortures are from Africa, Iran, Irak, and, more recent, Mexico.

The guy who originally ran ogrish.com now runs liveleak.com. A lot of war footage still gets posted, only without much of the truly gory stuff.
