And while this legislation may indeed benefit people it won't do much against the 50 000 dead who are supposedly killed by secondhand smoke. We're talking about New York city here.
Spending a few hours in Shibuya one of the busiest crossings on the planet stresses your lungs about as much as smoking quite a few cigarettes. The thing is you don't see it or smell that exposure.
You don't really want to tell me that New York one of the biggest cities in the world with its millions of vehicles is going to be any better are you? Central Park is located right in the middle of everything... yeah the air is going to be much fresher there. Look the legislation isn't a bad step but I do think it's a bit of window-dressing...
And if you don't mind me talking about Japain again: You weren't allowed to smoke in public either but there were either smooking rooms (actual rooms that were well air conditioned where you could sit and enjoy a cigarette, but sometimes it was a bit uncomfortable if they were full and the whole place was full of smoke but that rarely happend) or smoking areas (places marked out by yellow stripes on the pavement with ashtrays and everything) where you could smoke in the city. And it was never an issue ever in Japan. It may have a lot to do with the mentality but with this solution people aren't punished for doing something they have every right to do.
I understand that secondhand smoke is a bad thing and whenever I smoke I make sure I annoy as little people as possible (which is really easy because I live in Bonn and you meet about 10 people on a busy day -_-) but I also understand that not all smokers are as considerate and people that don't like smoking shouldn't be forced to accept smokers. That however doesn't allow the conclusions that non-smokers can force smokers out of every domain simply because they smoke. Creating these small smoking areas isn't going to cost any city anything and is in no way a hindrance or annoyance and it would prevent smokers from being treated like second class citizens.

Which is something people that live in a heavily urbanized area their entire life can't seem to grasp. I'm living in central Massachusetts, which isn't even urban, but it's located far closer to major hubs and there aren't rolling mountains of vegetation around. When I take a home visit, I'm sniffing the air like it was cocaine on a boob because it tastes so damn good. Few non-smokers like having smoke blown in their face on a crowded sidewalk, but if you're getting upset over somebody lighting up in a park, you're pretty much straining out a gnat while swallowing a camel. NYC's air quality is already pathetic; get over it.

Quote: people die from "overplaying" World of Warcraft, is anyone banning that computer game? No, of course no...
i hate this rule.. why should be people banned of smoking? people should have a choice..
i mean it's ok to ban smoking indoors , but outdoors, it's just too much..
you want to make people stop smoking, just stop selling them! and of course it is never going to happen, as BAT (brittish american tobacco) is making multi-billion profits!!!
they are just Hypocrits!!!! that's all i can say!!!
If you closed the industry, where do the millions of people who used to work there go?

Banning people from smoking indoors makes more sense, as people are captive audiences if they're in a place getting a service they cannot get elsewhere. It's not fair for somebody to poison everybody else.
Banning people from smoking outdoors close to the entrances of buildings makes sense too. People allergic to cigarette smoke need to get inside/outside.
Banning people from smoking outside in general in the open air away from everybody else, that just sounds like a law to print money in the form of fines.
People of course, should also be able to smoke in their own homes, but they should also have the common sense not to do so around children.
That's just my opinion.
