Space Technology and Exploration
I wanted to create a broad topic but this first post is about exploring our past from space. Indiana Jones is old school. Well, I'm sure boots on the ground and old fashioned research will always be a very important part of archeology. But here we have major finds using satellite technology.
17 Lost Egyptian Pyramids Found From Space
Quote:
Infrared imaging was used to locate ancient buried pyramids.
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have located seventeen lost pyramids, 1,000 tombs and more than 3,000 ancient settlements in Egypt after studying images produced by a state-of-the-art infrared technique that allowed them to clearly see the ruins underground.

They better be reliable this time Gnomsey. If this adventure ends with me waking up on the street without my pants on again, I'm going to be a hot little potato.
Anyway, we'll need to take out a loan to buy some +1 grenade launchers of undead slaying and a +5 carpet bomber of civilian slaying as a contingency plan. I still vouch that explosives are the best strategy when fighting in a 3000 year old building.

But the only real trouble comes from those nasty mummies, surrounded by traps and casting "Disease ridden stench" at level 14. The things smell awful . Don't worry, Meroe, I mean, my mysterious employer pays top dollar for cursed gold...
Personally, I prefer using bunker buster ICBMs of building destruction + 2, but that's just me. *Shrugs*

Enough off topic posting in this thread. I hope that we can use this tech to find my contacts...
But seriously, with this we can explore hidden parts of our world, find new islands, rescue stranded survivors lost out at sea, and (eventually) explore new planets. Science for the win!

impressive. I'm not sure if it falls into the hand of a government, I doubt they are going to search pyramids... but I guess they would be happy to locate military bases for example.

Btw this thread will be about technology? Like FTL or other? Or oldtech like laser and other old and boring stuff?

Oh, I imagine Egypt will excavate the pyramids and other ruins. Besides telling Egypt more of its history the pyramids make great tourist attractions and exhibits can be sent all over the world if significant finds are made.

The thread is for anything about things like space exploration and technologies related to space exploration including sattelites, space ships, colonies, ect. It is not a Volcanic Wastelands thread however.

yeah, aside from the obvious profit from tourism, I was thinking about what other countries would do with it.
could it be used on other planets as well?

There is no reason why the same tech could not be used on other planets.

Why there is. Earth is a unique planet that triggers the fact that many things that works on earth won't work somewhere else (only planets like earth but not so many similar planets are known).
Atmosphere is the first thing. A methan atmosphere may cause the signals evasion or absorption. And the crest of earth contains many heavy elements (Uranium, thorium etc.) which elements have serious effects such methods like we talking about.
And these are just a few factor that popped in my mind but I am sure there are others...

Thing is, we can still use the satalites to observe other planets, Dukey. They don't have to have an atmosphere for us to look at them. Said planets could also hold valuable minerals or materials on them that we could use for the advancement of science and the human race. You can't just automatically write something off because grass isn't growing on it.
Edit: Also, the uranium and other radioactive materials are in the earth's crust, and satilites can be launched into space, away from that influence.

Crust? I known I spelled wrong
I think the question was the usage of infrared scanning.
BTW there are many ways to watch a planet. And with enough time and zeal almost every planet could be terraformed which have solid surface (well gas giant can develop solid surface to after enough time and with sufficient mass of gases that cause strong enough gravity).
Exploring space is good thing. And out there there are materials we never dreamed here on earth. We do not known every element just those we found here on earth and those we could made artificially here on earth.
But such exploring needs FTL, innertial stabilizers\buffers and many other things we do not have yet... YET!

Dont worry,we will nuke ourselves before we can dream on FTL.
FTL is science fiction.

Anti-matter is apparently readily available for study in orbit around the earth. And a potential source for fuel.
Anti-matter orbits the earth
Quote:
Physicists have successfully created and even briefly confined antimatter here on Earth.
But the discovery of a natural reservoir of antiprotons in space provides a unique opportunity to study the rare particles in their natural state, Angelopoulos said.
"The magnetosphere is a pristine laboratory for studies of these basic processes, because there are no interactions with laboratory walls or laboratory detectors" to interfere with the particles and facilitate their escape, he said.
Overall, PAMELA's continued antiparticle count could have significant implications for understanding cosmic-ray production and propagation across the galaxy, as well as the paths any resulting particles take through Earth's atmosphere, study co-author Bruno said.
PAMELA's results could also be corroborated by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a $15-billion cosmic-ray detector managed by the U.S. Department of Energy that was ferried to the International Space Station earlier this summer, he added. (See "Space Shuttle Launch to Put Giant Ray Detector in Space.")
NASA scientists have even entertained the idea of capturing and harnessing antimatter to propel the next generation of spacecraft, but such scenarios are still a long way off.

I've been interested in terraforming for some time, since finding same exact planet like ours in near vicinity is a joke. However, what I noticed is that it doesn't seem too possible because of:
1. Planet mass - and the resulting gravitation. Why is this important? because a strong gravitation is needed to hold the atmosphere and prevent the oxygen from escaping to space. Puts most moons out of the picture. (for instance Europa moon has 0.008 times Earth mass...) Can you increase the mass of the planet? not really... you could crash its moons, should have any, into it, but with current technology it's not very possible, and besides it would be a small increase anyway.
Also, anything different than 1G may have impact on humans. Especially fetuses. Low gravity could cause extreme bone weakness and tallness.
Mars sucks here, too light.
Note that gravity can't be too big either since that could make reaching 1st cosmic velocity impossible. So anything going in would not be able to leave the planet at all with current engines.
2. Spin time - we want it to be 24h/day. Mars has 24 hours and several minutes, making it great, but Venus takes 243 DAYS to rotate. So that would be one heck of a night. meaning no plants. meaning no terraforming. Can we increase spin time? not at all with current technology. It would require an artificial moon, bombarding it with comets or other absurd sci-fi ideas.
3. Magfield protection - a planet needs strong magnetic field, else solar/cosmic radiation will simply kill things on it fast. Sucks on Venus, everything goes through there. Related to spin time btw. Slow planets suck in this department.
4. Temperature. Venus with 440 Celcius degrees of temperature would require a pretty powerful atmosphere to cool it down, but the planet may be too small to hold that much. Mars is okay with temperature ranging from 20 celucius to -70 celcius.
5. Oxygen. Of all those, this is easiest to get. Anaerobic bacteria life transported there would take care of that in a couple hundreds years. Providing the planet's gravitation would be able to lock oxygen and not let it escape.

Mars is most likely the best candidate. (Ignoring the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.)
Unfortunately it lacks a magnetic field.
I don't think however that the lack of good gravity is that much of a deal. I mean sure it's a problem, but it's something that mankind must find a solution for anyway seeing how pretty much everything in space either has the wrong gravity, or none at all...

Lol Duke lets first establish efficient space travel in our own system before we start to develop FTL drives , one step at a time, also first we should achieve a healthy lifestyle for every man woman and child on this planet, before we even attempt to colonise/explore new planets.
