Ballista damage
The ballista is quite useless in H3, we all know that. Still, I thought it could block enemy melee troops from my archers (since it takes up space) so I bought one for my high level death knight (with very good stats). Then I noticed that it was killing alot of creatures (with anything in the artillery skill). I checked its stats, and it dealt something like 68-75 damage or something. I thought only the ballistas attack could be changed, but not its damage. My hero was isra, who does not have a specialty in the ballista.
What is the ballista damage affected by exactly? And how does a hero specialty affect the ballista?

ballista damage increases as your hero is leveling up (something like +3 dmg per level)

Besides the normal bonus of attack/defense difference, you also have to take the archery skill into account, if present.
And balistae are far away from being useless, especially at the beginning of the game. 250 hitpoints is quite a lot as distraction of slower walkers, you know...

You can reach the maximum potential of Ballista only if you have a high-level hero with ballista special(like Sir Christian or Gerwulf) and artillery skill,it can kill several 7th level creatures and it will shoot twice.

Ballista damage is affected by Hero attack. I do not know exact ammount since I don't have game installed atm but it is somewhere in line of +2MIN3MAX damage per attack point of the hero. That is why ballista is best when operated by Barbarian, who instantly get 8-12 damage bonus due to having 4 attack.
NOTE: Numbers here might not be 100% accurate, but the mechanic works like that.

i ran some tests and it seems that ballista is not so useless after all. with 30 attack damage (on casual games it is easy to obtain, especially with gurnisson), expert artillery and archery I did 370 damage to ancient hydras (so two shots = 740dmg).
Have to play small map on gameranger to see if it is good on low levels too, sounds like fun.

The problem's not the damage but the HP - after the first month any AoE spell or attack can take it down immediately so generally Artillery is a waste of skill slot and without it the ballista is more of an obstacle than anything else. For quick games it's far from useless though.

Basic Damage 2-3
When Hero Attack Skill is 99: 200-300
So that is:
(2-3) + Hero Att Skill * (2-3)
