HYPER-SONIC AIR FORCE GLIDER MACH 20 PLANE! ...goes missing
Clicky
I'm still just ****ing awestruck by the fact that there is a MACH 20 (!!!) plane in existance.
This here mofo is supposed to be able to strike any point on earth in under 1 hour.
It's just... wow.
Anyway it went missing, poof

Awwww, I missed the youtube video of it before it got taken down. Apparently you could see a video of it.... or rather, not see a video of it because it was moving too fast.

As if it won't be grounded 99% of the time due to technical difficulties

A moose hunting rifle's bullet at its peak moves at about 900 m/s...
This plane would move at 5555 m/s.
I mean, ****, yeah you wouldn't be able to see it

Yeah, seems like the speed would easily break this plane

Apparently it's covered in some super-carbon material, gives it awesome resistance.

It flew successfully last year, so the "Super Carbon Material" does work. They made some adjustments since the first flight from what I read in another article a day or two ago. Yeah, the ability to strike anywhere on the planet in less than an hours is sweet.

You could use it as a fricking sweet means of transportation though
Or well I dunno, the logical parts of my mind tell me that anything remotely human inside that thing would be reduced to a stain.

It's a drone aircraft. If it was a manned aircraft it would quickly become an unmanned aircraft
Anyway, my initial impression is that this is a far more useful research field than dicking around with making 5th generation super-maneuverable fighter jets. Watching them make their high velocity turns on youtube is super cool, but I'd like to know what modern military we're fighting that we imminently need billions pumped into the program. Being able to get somewhere less than an hour after a communication comes in has a lot more juiciness to it. It doesn't need to be able to bank at 120 degree angles and flip around in the air like an acrobat.

The deal is to push the envelope now and develop technology that ensures dominance in the air for many years to come. And of course as you push technology new unforseen developments come with your research. You can't wait until you need it and then decide to develop it!

even back in the 60's we had missiles that could deliver a nuke to Moscow in 30 minutes, so why is this news?

Now we can bomb specific sections of any nuclear power without alerting the entire world and starting a nuclear holocaust.

Wait, how long did the USSR take to develop radars that could see the B2 "stealth" bombers?
Unless they manage to make teleportation technology, there will hardly be a way to strike a nuclear power without them knowing it.
