And why can't shop keepers use phones? I'm not talking about Mobile Phones either. I was told that that wasn't a problem. Have we become so dependent on mobile phones that we forgot what life was like without them and act as if it's the end of the world when they're gone? Geez..
Wait, they disabled the GMS stuff, and left the landlines online?
What? Source please.

That's only what my girlfriend told me and she lives in London. The main source of people finding out where every other rioter was going was with Blackberry. That is what they took down.

This thread is about SAN FRANCISCO, where they turned off all carriers for cellphones at the transit stops, meaning that there was no landline phones there to be used either.
And then there is a small bit of logic: A cellphone tower got a range of 35-40 km, and the officials turned off 4 of them. That is a blackoutzone of 70x70km, where you can't call 911 or ambulances. 4900km^2 where you can't get help. Unless the carriers are running some tech that is non-workable in the first place, limiting them to a tower per 2-3 kilometers.
What they should have done is to have blocked ALL non 911/emergcy calls, which is fully possible and feasable with todays tech.
As for your point about landline phones:
They are dieing after the introduction of cellphones, with each passing year the amount of landlines is reduced. In 10-20 years they will be a rare novelity that likely will be free of charge, and the young generation will look at it like a alien artifact when they encounter one.
As of todays date I have not seen a statistic, but I doubt there is even as much as 40% coverage of it.
Now: About UK, the only things I can google indicates that they where "talking about it"; but they never actually got around and unplugged the entire snowing cellphone system.
And a small note:
DON'T snowING DO IT.
Just block all non emergency calls instead!
And why some might ask? Why is that such a bad thing?
Ask instead:
What is the point of being able to call a ambulance if the officials unplug it in the first place? What is the point of being able to call for police reinforcements if the looters finally get to your place if it is unplugged?
Is is not the fact that you are denied a service that you paid for that rubs me, it is the fact that one of the most vital things you have access to is blocked.

Uh, oh! Big Brother Government also is here, in the OSM. Corribus is your Big Brother. Listen to him or else
In all seriousness, Anonymous is on the exact same side as Elodin in this issue it looks like. In response to the shutdown, they are organizing a protest.

It's not just Anonymous but the ACLU.
Quote:
ACLU of Northern California sent a letter to BART chief of police Kenton Rainey, noting:
BART's actions must be seen in the context of today' s events. All over the world, people are using mobile devices to protest oppressive regimes, and governments are shutting down cell phone towers and the Internet to silence them. BART has never disrupted wireless service before, and chose to take this unprecedented measure for the first time last week in response to a protest of BART police. BART's decision was in effect an effort by a governmental entity to silence its critics.
So I wonder if Elodin would like to retract this entire thread after he finds out that he's in the same boat as the ACLU and bunch of anarchist computer hackers
EDIT:
IMHO they should just take this straight to the supreme court and skip the mountain of blather leading up to it. I'm willing to bet money that Scalia and the conservative cohort take the "law and order" viewpoint and justify it in the name of preserving whatever it is they like to preserve.

The ACLU sides with whichever side is getting its freedom of speech squelched. Like siding with kids wearing religious shirts when their school forbids them or defending people who want to preach in public parks (if it's a private citizen and not a politician, you can say whatever you want in the US).

I could care less what the ACLU's position is I think you are certainly wrong about how the non-Marxists on the court would rule. Oh, and he ACLU is quite often on the worng side of things, as it is extremely anti-religious. The organization that actually defends Amerian liberties is the American Center for Law and Justice, and thay have had to fight the ACLU a number of times.
