Rate the towns

So guys, to satisfy my curiosity (well something has to do since I can't play myself ):

what's your order of towns, from best to worst? And why?

Do you mean strength-wise, how well they are done or personal favorites?

Necro seems the most imbalanced faction with the classic turtling strategy. Those silly spiders can kill 7 champions per hit, add lich shooting, some sweet ghost healing, the lovely necromancy and it's an overkill scenario unless the opponent breaks through the meatshields. Vampirism works with ranged units too.

Second I would consider stronghold but I have not done adequate testing to be certain. Enraged cyclope plus panther charge with first blood giving extra dmg and +2 movement can be crazy. Won't end the game then and there but it's a heavy blow and in your best interest to prevent it.

It's a bit difficult at the moment because certain key spells and racial abilities are bugged, overpowered beyond anything close to reason or just not working. Moreover, the duels are not giving a 100% accurate picture of the power of each faction. With these things in mind, here's my list:

1. Necropolis (nearly uncontested)
2. Stronghold
3. Haven
4. Inferno and Sanctuary

This ranking however does not mean that you can't beat Stronghold with Inferno for example but only that it's rather difficult while the opposite - not so much. Necropolis can also lose from some of the factions below, particularly Stronghold, it but in most scenarios wins decisively.

Duels are not everything, I don't think Necro is the best faction in normal games.

But in duels:

- Necropolis
- Haven
- Stronghold (puppet master on those cyclops and boom, three of your own stacks halved! But really, any disable on the cyclops will cripple them greatly)
- Inferno
- Sanctuary

In normal skrimishes (mostly played AI):

- Haven (healing, good def, good ranged, invulnerability)
- Sactuary (healing and debuff removal, decent core, good spellcast and water walk ability. Mainly rated high because priestess and kenshin, creeping without losses from start)
- Necropolis (healing, necromancy, lacks good offensive output for a while though)
- Stronghold (lacks healing, except regen and/or vampirism) but good creeping with traps and powerful maulers
- Inferno.

I'm not going to count anything but cores since that's all you really need.

From my observations, based solely on core units:

Haven
Sanctuary
Necropolis
Stronghold
Inferno.

HahaHA, turtling Necropolis. That's something new.

Anyway, I can't help but notice a trend in many games, not just Heroes VI:

Good guys tend to be the best, bad guys tend to be the weakest.

Inferno was already the weakest in Heroes III, Castle was arguably the strongest especially with Archangels. Heroes V - I'm not sure about Haven, but Inferno was certainly the weakest. Now it happens again - Haven among top factions, Inferno the weakest.

Why is this trend so common ? My guess is that campaign is supposed to be easy for player. Campaigns tend to be played from the side of good guys.

Yea, Inferno is the coolest looking town in the game too. The fort, the creatures--they all look the best to me. The pit lord is very awesome to say the least. I'm not sure how strong they are. I haven't played more than 1 game against a computer opponent.

Inferno is really interesting. Personally I think they have the funniest racial for sure. Though it can be a pain to raise it's gauge since it demands luck.

However the faction in itself is kind weak, but it's very flexible. However too little health for it's minions makes it dead meat. The Cerberus in particular is in some serious need of buffs. (At least for a duel point of view.)

Well isn't that the same, on the bottom line? Anyway, from what experience I had in 1.2, Cerberus totally needed to have No Retaliation.

Well, if the other factions are overpowered, then it is too weak. They are definitely interesting to play with but this does not make them competitive. Still, I'm yet to lose a game against Sanctuary which is not using Retribution Aura (or maybe the Sanctuary players I'm fighting are all noobs ). The Cerberus badly needs its low survivability addressed, the Ravagers could use more health as they drop like flies when the opponent focuses the attacks on them (and they force him to focus fire on them) and it won't hurt to give the Pit Fiend/Lord 5% more HP. Also, the Pit Lord's Boundless Hate does next to nothing, I use it only if the battle is decided, hence it's damage should be at least doubled. No comment about the Breeder...

I Just had a very nice batle whith inferno vs. a snactuary Heroe His advantages were in Elite troops and Champions, one level and fortification, on my side was the number of core unites.

The batle was very nice but some thing puped out on the inferno topic.
1: Cerberos really neads something to pimp it up. first of my stacks to die.
2: Is it me, or is Gatting more eficient ona Elite troops. Whith a 2 tier gatting I was ably to get only 20% of a core stack, but layter my Elite troopes gated from 40-50% of there stack.
3: The Tormenter should really be able to use his spliters in the same round he has moved.
4: I do not think the Jugernout ability really works, or I just do not know how to use it propely.

I did not have the opertunity to play whith Haven. But sofar, inferno seems to have a rought start but potential into the later game.

Once the gauge is full Gating is definitely best when used on Core units. Their gated numbers surpass that of the original stack's. This however is not the case with Elite and Champion.
As it is of now, there is no point whatsoever to pick the army with the Cerberus. The Lilim both does more damages and survives so much easier. :/

Making it possible for an inferno player to force-trigger hateful retaliation might be really interesting.. altough it may turn the faction too pit lord centric. Actually making a breeder to steal more mana (2 per breeder for example?) could be a change worth considering as well.

Haven't tested might abilities yet but - does Taunt cause retaliation?

Frenzy neither. The only thing you can willingly trigger is retribution aura by attacking and having the enemy retaliate on you.

Question is, who exactly are the good guys. Haven is kinda mixed between good and bad, once again. Hell, they are the main enemy in 3 out of 4 campaign missions available so far. Necropolis started out all bad (and kinda broken) in V, until Tribes introduced (sort of) good necromancer groups. Stronghold was also evil, as least by means of classification for some gameplay elements, and by no means weak.

Anyhow, for me the winner at the moment would be Stronghold, though they are somewhat held back by being the only faction so far without any healers. Doesn't help that they tried to solve the magic skill issue by making the cooldowns even longer.
