I love the mechanics behind Heroes 4. It's easily one of the more complex games in the series. Complex = more options, which is nice. Imagine how great this game would have been if 3DO lived long enough to fine-tune the rules/field/classes and if it had better graphics. Possibly along the lines of Heroes 6, since Heroes 4 in general is a lot more down-to-earth and grim compared to Heroes 3 and Heroes 5's graphics would have been too cartoon-y.

The music in "Heroes IV" is really amazing, especially the "Dirt Terrain" and "Rough Terrain" pieces. Karin Mushegain contributed the haunting vocal tracks, bravo! Hope we will hear more sopranos / mezzo-sopranos on the next games' soundtracks.

All songs with the choir/vocals in H4 are an instant win.
In particular - Chaos, Nature and Life town themes, as well as certain terrain themes. (which I can't quite recall atm)
(I'm by no means saying that songs withot vocals are bad, but hearing the Chaos theme is the reason I played H4 again.)

The music from H2+ H3 + H4 is definitely the best music. More soul and heart in those, nostalgia.
H5 + H6 sounds like epic movie background music. I don't personally like those too much, though, they're not bad, per say.

Got a question - I heard on the web that the track that plays on the sea terrain (Floating Across Water on the soundtrack) is actually based on some old folk tune. Can someone tell me about this tune, or better yet, point me towards the place where I can research more? The history, the origins, anything. Google has so far given me only links for OST download links.

Basically if you would like to trace the original you could research the company that sells those basic tunes. If you get any results please post them, I've been in the same waters such as you ... I'd love to hear the original celtic music or whatever culture such songs may come from.

I will put it like this; when im playing any HOMM game the music normally ends up annoying me after a while and i turn it right down or off completely. However HOMM4 is different, i always listen to music all the time when playing it, its really good, probably one of the best sound tracks of any game ive played

Really?
Personally, whenever I played H2, H3 or H4 I always enjoyed the music, it's clearly one of the strongest points of the series imo.
H4 has some of the best tracks of the saga though, Paul & Rob at their peak

yes, its not like i hate the other sound tracks they are all very good its just if i am playing for a long period of time i tend to get a bit fed up with them, but that never happens when i play H4. I could listen to it all day

I'm just mistaken: Julie Murphy is the actual vocalist singing on terrain tracks. Really love her vocalise there. Karin Mushegain's voice heard on town themes isn't the one I'm really fond of.

Music is great, no doubt about that one. Suits theme and graphics, provides great atmosphere... I would not say that it is the best in the whole franchise- prefer more the one in HoMM 3. I would say it is on pair with the music and soundtrack from HoMM 2 (well, maybe also with HoMM 5- but this one I have not played that much to give proper view)
My favourite scores are Academy's theme (pure magic), also like water theme, snow. special mention is to Necropolis theme, really well done. I am not a huge fan of Asylum and Preserve themes. main menu theme (in the original) is very good but at the same time... a bit too epic, prefer the calmer one from HoMM 3.
According to me, the battle music was one of the weaker parts of the series- too faint and repetitive... in Homm 4 it is better (have to admit, some of them are way too similar to each other) and some battle scores do not become quickly irritating as in HoMM 3
What i do not like are Life's music (hate saxophon, a lot prefer scores from hoMM 2 and HoMM 3) and some minor themes that are a bit too similar.
Overall, HoMM 4 has really good scores- but not that many have sunk deeply into my memory.
Postives:
+ Academy' soundtrack
+ battle music
+ Necropolis theme
+ main menu theme
+ snow and sea themes
+ most of pieces that we can hear on adventure map...
Negatives
-... but not all
- there is a bit too much music, sometimes silence would be nice
- do not like some themes (especially aven)
- some pieces are too repetitive
- sadly there is no possibility to tune opera (as it was in Homm 2- or at least I have not noticed this possibility)

BTW, has anyone else ever experienced that glitch I mentioned earlier?
If I leave any town screen open for too long, the music track, rather looping seamlessly from beginning to end, will often start to "hiccup," repeating a random ten second stretch of the score over and over again.
Opening a new town screen (with a different score) temporarily clears up the problem... until that town's music begins to glitch as well.
I play on Windows XP, if that matters.
