I think you're confusing auto combat (AI-controlled tactical combat) with quick combat (the tactical screen doesn't even appear; some sort of algorithm is used to determine casualties).
Quick combat is indeed very poor, at least in Heroes II I'm currently playing. A newbie barbarian is recruited in last AI city. I'm playing a Knight, and have 90% of the map conquered but my main forces are away and I'm spread out quite thin. The barbarian takes takes a pack of titans from the city, attacks a horde (or even a throng, whatever) of druids. The barbarian is defeated !!! What should've been an "oh snow !" moment and turning of the tables left me baffled, instead.
Or, after unsuccessful AI attack, "a few rogues" remain. This is extremely unlikely, they're very fragile, fast, and have no retaliation. It's hard to imagine a battle ending like that.
