I bought the pre-order and regret it slightly. It's not bad, but unless they've used the extended release date time well, it'll be mediocre on release, and until they release an expansion.

Note that Heroes 5 borrows from Heroes 4, because at least some solutions and features it has are very interesting.
Heroes 4 has very bad AI, and its campaigns are story-based. But the story is actually very good. And the lack of AI can be overcome in multiplayer.

There's a good reason H4 was widely considered the black sheep of the family though it did have its share of good things. Campaigns and music for one.

This is not the right thread to dispute the quality of Heroes 4. I'm merely stating the fact that it has a very much different gameplay from Heroes 3 and 5. I consider Heroes 3 and 5 to feature the traditional gameplay of the series. OP said he liked those, so I questioned wether he liked Heroes 4 too, because it's different and that would determine if he's open to serious changes in the gameplay. Heroes 6 has made such changes too. But since he hasn't played Heroes 4, my question is irrelevant.

I am asking myself the same question right now. It was announced a long time ago that H6 would NOT be a DRM and yet it is a 1/2? The fact is if I HAVE to be "on-line to recieve full-benefit" or, <iow> "all of the game's potential".
I am very disappointed. Moreso as it appears the present games innovations are heavily targeting "on-line gaming" and <imo> moving away from the adventure/strategy that I enjoy.
I can see why there are some here that are happy with this direction. I'm not saying that my side of this coin cannot be met with time but that leads me to another question; will it? Will the adventure map recieve the improvements it needs for the solo-gamer?
Time will tell.
Since I am a H3/H5 map-making-nut, with all of reduction in objects, resources and adventuring startegy; what eaxctly will a map-maker make? Hmmm, How big will I make the battlefield option? Boss present?...Yes or No? Towns "AoC" Y or N? Thus far, this does not sound very tempting.

The game is fully playable offline. You can do offline all that you could do in the previous installments of the series. You can play the campaign, choose your factions, save and load your game, play custom games etc. etc. If you go online, there's even more things that you can do, extras and bonuses.
DRM was a method that required you to stay online so you can play. But since you only have to be online once to activate your account and from then on you can stay offline forever, this is not it.

I recommend you buy Heroes 6. I've played all of the HOMMs, and like yourself I have not played the Demo or Beta. After reviewing all of the comments made about the game thus far I think it will definitely be nice to play a new HEROES game.
Besides, you can play the original release and grow with the game as it grows with patches & expansions. I'm looking forward to October 13th!

So then "any" additional features are about On-line-MultiPlayer only?

It is things like achievements, being able to buy different avatars for your account, extra bonuses to start a map with, dynasty weapons etc.

As I understand it, they can have an effect on single player games too, even in offline mode but they're not necessairy. Just bonuses like I said. And you're not required to be constantly online to authenticate your copy except for the one time when you install it.

Whether or not it looks perfect to you, you sould buy it. Simply to support the series. It might not be your favourite game and you might like the previous installments more but I do believe we owe it to the series to give it a try. H6 will be part of the heroes series and we should try our best to make it a big commercial success for ubi since we want them to make expansions, improve the game and add more things.
We spend money on so many things we dont really need and if you look at money you spent on H3 or H5 and compare that to the value you got out from it youll find that it was a very very good investment. If you add the H6 costs to that it will still have been an excellent investment. So go buy it!!
Then again Im not a hardcore gamer I dont buy a lot of games at all but H6 is special.

Good point Azagal. For me, probably the best reason. The franchise is my gaming-Oasis.

People are too competitive about which games are the best nowadays I still cannot honestly answer whether H3 or H5 was the best game in the series for me. In its time H3 was immensely rewarding and gave me plenty of good memories with friends yet I am not interested in playing it again. H5 has given me just as many fun moments and more if you add the multiplayer epic clashes - Azzie knows what I'm talking about - but again its time has passed and I am looking forward to something fresh. Different periods, different reasons but both were loads of fun no matter how you look at it.

Abstracting away from the fact that I am only one customer I would worry about buying the game just to show my support, because I think my money would be better served as a disciplining device. If they make a game worth my while I would reward them with my Euros (or dollars since I am in the states). If they got that reward without making a good game then who could blame them for a making a bad game?

This.
Just because somebody else (3D0/NWC) made a really good game doesn't mean that Ubisoft deserves to get your money automatically. From my perspective, Ubisoft has made one decent game (H5) and one mediocre one (H6 as it stands in the beta). That's a 50% success rate, which doesn't warrant me spending sixty dollars on a game I don't trust yet.

You have to be connected to the Conflux to access any Dynasty feature (dynasty weapons, portraits, traits or even your own pre-made heroes)
