Basic strategic advice: A few questions from a new fan

i'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this...

i'm very very new to the series and have just picked up the demo 3-4 days ago.... now first, i'm someone who drags alot and especially if i do not have enough troops. so i'll camp and wait for troops or run around collecting resources while i wait for troops...

this particular thing happened to me in the demo where i think i waited for too long and gerhart had.. like..

(this is the pathetic and hilarious part to some people @_@)

now gerhart has 600 Praetorians 600 marksman and 500 Vestals.. and i have only about 200 praetorians.. 100 crossbowmen and 120 sisters >_>

yes! i don't think i can win anymore as if i wait for more troops his army will only get bigger..

any tips on how to play well and engagement rules? i think i'm kinda doing things wrongly. lol.

The first thing you should do is build your "town center" - the city hall, town hall, capitol, etc. - so that you can increase your daily income.

Don't be afraid to lose a few troops in order to take a mine or an external dwelling; you'll appreciate having the extra ore, wood, or crystal, and the external dwelling will also increase the number of troops you get per week, which will more than make up for any troops you lost.

When you fight neutrals (specifically, neutrals that aren't shooters), don't charge into battle right away; remember that your hero has a special attack that he can use every turn, meaning that before your troops even engage the enemy you can knock out five or six of them with just your hero and crossbowmen.

Definitely fight if you think you can win, but don't overexert yourself.  Losing most of your army can cripple you at the worst possible moment, which can make building a strong army nearly impossible.

That's all I've got for now.  Unfortunately, the campaign maps require that you take action as quickly as possible, because certain aspects are set from a timer.

thank you for your reply!

ah i see. yes. i do attack every turn. but i attack mostly the archers and such lol.

actually, i have too much excess resources.. i could screenshot the number of resources i have >_> i think you'll be in shock lol. infact, i think that is precisely why the enemy has so much time to mass a huge army. :\

man.. lol. kinda depressing when you kinda predict when you buy a game, you're unable to complete anything in it ._.

I suppose it is because of town conversion and shared creatures pool. in previous games, camping worked well against AI. they could conquer the whole map, but they would have several type of castle, more or less far from each other, and not enough gold to buy everything, so they would most likely have a multitude a small armies, and a strong one, but not necessarily much stronger than yours (sometimes weaker). the main exception was if the opponent could capture several inferno towns, then it became pretty dangerous.

I'm sorry this is offtopic but your post just ringed a bell in my mind.

The camping part. This is the point where H6 gets boring at the end fo the game.
Why? Well for example, if in older games I killed the enemies Main hero He could buy him agein and get the "Undestroyed" army from his "Non native" faction castel that he had been saving from week 5 or so when he got the castel. So I do not get to play one final batle bat two or more. And this also works for me. If I have a sylvan hero and manage to get a Academy castle, I can use the Academy unites whit a secondary hero to weeken the enemy and chage the ods in the future final batle. This is where I see the weakpoint of H6 ad my biggest fear of the townconversion. Ont only does it make the unit gathering easier, but also destroys the "Two or mor army" factor and makes One more week and  I out number him not a strategy but an every game fact and from a certain point it doesn't matter  if I finishe it or not, because the oponent does not have a chance anymore.

I'm not sure I understand...they are the same number of units. Yes, you were forces to split them and now they can be combined in a super army but so what? The player just decided to put all his eggs in one basket and paid the price. Bear in mind that the army that you would vanquish in the case you mention would be far stronger than in the previous games.  If anything, what you mention is an incentive for not recruiting everything to a single hero's army. Nothing prevents you from splitting them and do exactly what you mention-weaken and harass the enemy. You're just not forced to do that.

First of all welcome to the world of HOMM, you are new hence nothing you do is pathetic....

1. Check your buildings and decide in which order you want to build stuff, every faction and every player likes to go in a different manner about it.
2. Once you're done with that step, its about resource collection and planning for the future
3. Fight when you must or when you are certain to win.
4. Every creature has its weakness and strength, learn them and how to use them or how to best fight against them.
5. Strategy, Im stingy on my troops so I try not to loose any, in some cases you must sacrifice some, splitting 10 praetorians into 7 1 1 1 and then sending the 3 ones to stop the enemies movement or simply take the first blow is just one of many strategies you will figure out while playing, its a strategy game hence findin new ones is what you will find enjoyable...
6. Venture out and fight, do it smart though, keep in mind that fighting gets you experience, the more you have the stronger you are...
7. It is a game in which the goal is to win so you have to be on the offense, camping cant be your strategy in the long run, you must dare.. Keep in mind that everything you gain you also take away from your enemy...

There are many more tings you should know but, you are new, enjoy it and find out for yourself, it is a big part of the game

thank you everyone for your kind responses!

@smithey

thank you for your detailed steps. i'm sure it will help in time to come..

normally i just build everything >_> lol... honestly by then i have enough for everything :X. but i'm someone who likes praetorians alot. so normally i'll build them first.

i know a good strategy is to stack them side by side. makes them harder to take down.

about your massing strategy. 7 1 1 1... uhm.. i'm someone who likes to mass troops into maybe 100 a bundle. is that wise? lol.

sometime's its not that i don't want to venture out if you know what i mean >_>. i know if i run out i'll die for sure lol. :\. (as you can see in the above situation)

@faunch

i'm level 6 >_> or 5 lol. is that available? :\

i think i'll stop playing the demo for fear of depression grips hold of me lol. i just hope i don't screw up in the normal campaign.

i love games such as these... i just couldn't find the right titles.. now i've found these and king's bounty thanks everyone ;x

LOL, it isnt my massing strategy, I was merely giving one example of one of the strategies that many players use...

If you are attacking 50 elite creatures for example, when you strike them they will retaliate, when you have a few creatures of 1 (whatever) once they make the first strike, they absorb the retaliation and die hence the rest of your creatures can hit the 50 elite ones without retaliation,,, one of many strategies used to save troops, thats all....

oh yeah, if i were to choose the tears path, but i have some blood spells as i need the extra offense.. is it wise to have such a build? will it disrupt the points badly? :\

It's well worth it trying the multiplayer in a heroes game, especially after sim turns will have been introduced. My experience tells me that it is much better you just dive in and have fun with other players than practice on your own, losses not withstanding you will learn much much more in a much shorter time Same was the case for me.

Mixing tears and blood can certainly work though you will get a better idea of its effectiveness if you see how much your reputation improves its corresponding abilities and at which level. If you just have lvl 1 blood it won't make blood abilities significantly stronger and even at lvl 2 you can afford to pick some tears abilities. More options are always good to have.

Heroes isn't really a game where you can just camp and hope to win.
Generally, you want to be able to accomplish this:
Day 1: creep 3-4 groups
Week 1: creep everything within 1 day's movement from your town
Week 2: get champion/2-3 elite dwellings and try to get 1 more town

Don't worry if you can't do that at the moment.  The key is to get better at creeping.  You should try to creep anything that is not "red", and when you get good, try to creep even some "red" groups.  When your hero level is decent (5+) you should be dealing so much damage with hero attacks that if you can keep your units alive (healing is key), you should be able to beat most stacks with 0 losses.

You gain so much advantage from having another town that you really can't let your opponent do it first.

EDIT:
Actually, day 1 really depends on the map.  On a lot of maps you won't have enough movement to take 3-4 groups.  Sometimes you can only take 1 or 2.  Still, go for the mine guardians (wood/ore/crystal) and try to do as much creeping as possible every single day of the first week.

Not sure H6 will allow for 2-3 elites AND champions week 2 Elites are rather pricey nowadays and champions have some insane requirements. Week 3-4 would sound more reasonable depending on how rich the map is. But anyway those are things to discover for yourself

i see. that's good to hear. i was afraid of the 1 blood reputation and such will servely cripple abilities or development of the characters.

oh no! don't be mistaken. camping is not my strategy. trust me lol. i'm someone who loves to defend. But i want to be aggressive too. i just didn't have the army count to go against the AI.. but i didn't expect him to amass such a huge army.. :\..

Elites are better than 'Core' creatures but weaker than 'Champions'.
Every faction has 3 core creatures, 3 elites and 1 champion.

What map are you playing on?  You shouldn't be encountering the AI if you wander around during the 2nd week.

By a "lot" of damage, I mean 70-80, which is usually enough to kill a single elite.  This is useful because say, if you fight 10 vampires and all you have is ~25 core units, it's possible to have one or two large stacks and 4-5 stacks of 1 around your main stack(s).  Attack with your hero until your little stacks die from taking all the hits, then cast regeneration on your biggest stack.  You will win with minimal losses, even though such a battle would be a "severe".

You can PM me if you have more questions.
