I think that Warg would be a great creature to have in Academy. From the Norse mythology.
In the story they could say that Wargs were another failed experiment of mixing different kind of animal species. They would fit perfectly in the desert theme in my opinion. Its ability could be:
Sudden Attack: Warg can make a single melee attack on any creature adjacent during its move.
The ability for its upgrade could be:
Natural Soul: Damage +30% on any enemy creatures which are not the same kind in your army. ( I explained it quite badly - if the enemy has Kappa for example and you don't your Warg gains extra 30% damage on it. But if you have Kappa in your army then the Warg cant deal a better damage on the Kappa.

Personally, I like the giant kitties! They are part of Ashan, and rather unique in the HoMM series for that... Plus I love me my whirlwind attack. I honestly don't understand why people don't like the Rakshasa. Is it just because they replaced the Naga?

In my opinion, Rakshasa is a copy of Naga with multi-hand and sword. I prefer Nagas. But in H6 they are in Sanctuary, and I don't like their male version, in legend Nagas are female.

A toss-up between Gargoyle and Rakshasa, and Rakshasa won.

When it comes to HoMM, the original magic factions are the Warlocks and Sorceresses.

tough choice...the problem here is, academy has several "obvious" ones - amges for example, MUST be in in any way - but they will it's like saying you want undead in necro...so i won't go for these...
...titans are classic and awesome but, for me, DEFINITELY not a must-have
...so who remains (for me)? Golems, Gargoyles and Djinn. (unless I could use my vote as ANTI-rakshasa to never have THEM in again)
all of these are originally classical and have their style, but have been painly perverted in H5, by the looks (except golems, they were ok). ...I think I take golems. They are solid, fit a wizard faction, and are most likely not to be crapped...

Say what you want about the H5 Rakshasa, but at least it doesn't remind of this:
