not by heart. I think you need to change several files, but I remember that they are damn hard to find. check existing mods. in particular the cytadel mod, they have a zip file with only texts in it, it is easier to find what you search.

I think there is a way, although it may involve a lot of files needing to be edited. Obviously, the programed names like Sylvan/Preserve, Inferno etc will remain as they are in the coding and you will need to look for them, but in advance, I can tell you that there will be appropriate files in the \text folder, as well as possibly many in other folders such as UI, any of those blasted ones with underscores at the front, \Arena, \ArenaObjects and even more if you want to delve into changing them in the campaigns as well. o_O
I would advise you to change this thread title to "Changing Faction names" rather than town names.
I can tell you that you can change the individual town names in the folders following the path
\Text\Game\Towns\[faction name]\¹ or ²
¹Random\ (for potential towns in scenarios)
²Script\ (for campaign towns, I think they are)
Actually, there are just the simple ones here:
\GameMechanics\RefTables\
^_^
Academy, Dungeon, Fortress, Haven, Inferno, Necropolis, Preserve, Stronghold and RandomRaceName would all be relevant. Try changing those and adding them to your mod. Don't forget that there are both data.pak and texts.pak to take files from to edit, so you won't always find everything you are looking for in one or the other .pak.
Get back to me about whether this solves the problem, as it may only change the name in game creation (when choosing races to play) or something like that, as opposed to most instances.
Keep in mind that any text in artefact descriptions, hero descriptions, (individual) town descriptions, campaign conversation et cetera will not be changed, as they'll still have whatever is in their specific related text files.
