Wait, school lunches in the US cost money, right?
Then it makes ZERO sense for there to be a limit on how much you can eat. Buy more food = you get more food.
I think it's good if vegetables are encouraged and accessable, but not if they are forced down peoples' throats. If there isn't a demand for greens, then I guess the logical thing to do would be to cut the supply.
My friend was in the US once and was SHOCKED to see the huuuuuge amount of overweight people. So it's good to see your government atleast trying to fix things.

Elodin, one school does not = the nation...
Also, schools are not forced to feed students anything, just provide them with the option of having a balanced, decent (saying healthy would be stretching it) meal. If the students are wasting the fruits and vegetables that they bought, then I guess it's their problem. Also, I don't think there is a school in the country that doesn't mark up the price of their food so that they profit or at least break even, so taxpayer dollars really aren't being wasted on anything... except for the money of the parents paying for their kids' meals, but that's an attitude issue.

Wait, your country provides school lunches just to get PROFIT? O.o
I thought the point of them was giving people a fairly healthy meal so that they get enough energy to get through the rest of the school day. Such a nescessary thing should, imo, be free and must be allowed to cost.

Granted, it's been a while since I was in public school, so things might be different now, but as far as I know: schools are required by law to provide lunch (at cost, though I believe children who can't afford the cost can get a lunch at reduced price or for free) to all public school children, and that meal is required to have so many calories. What has recently changed is the way these calories must be divided up (so many grains, so many vegetables, etc.)
In principle I don't have a problem with the new dietary guidelines. Kids should be eating healthier and nobody is forced to buy public school lunches, so if kids don't want to eat healthy, they can bring their own unhealthy lunches. (Elodin, you shouldn't be blaming schools because kids throw away apples. You should be blaming parents who don't teach their children how to have healthy eating habits.) There is one problem and that is that different children have different caloric requirements, so it isn't quite fair to arbitrarily draw the line at XXX calories per meal, because some kids are going to need more than that and some will need less. Then again, you've got to draw a line somewhere because it can't really just be an open buffet, so... again, I don't have a problem with it because there's not really a better option.
With respect to profit. School lunches I believe are contracted out by schools to food service providers. The providers must adhere to the federal laws which dictate dietary guidelines. Since providers are private businesses, of course they operate on for-profit models. My guess is that prices are negotiated at a local level (I don't think they are set by federal government, though could be wrong). Again I see nothing wrong with this.
A few years back I know there was some controversy about schools raising revenue by selling rights to vending companies, allowing them to put vending machines in schools. I don't think too many schools are doing this anymore because of all the public pressure against it.

@ Xerox: I see that I should have emphasized the word FORCED << like that. They do have to provide meals for students that need it (at cost, like Corribus said), but they are not forced to shove it down children's throats. Sorry for the confusion~

And here we have a student being suspended from school for making a picture of a flag and a gun his desktop background. Idiotic liberal school administration.

Of course you realize that this picture is a pretty massive political statement, right? You may not know the flag, but it's quite easily to identify - it's not just ANY flag, it's the flag of the ceased-to-exist nation of Yugoslavia (that's the state that desintegrated into Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia (& Montennegro), Bosnia-Herzegowina and Macedonia. I mean - it's comparable with an old USSR flag, and if you consider the effect that an old USSR flag with an AK-47 on it might have, it's not such an innocent picture at all.
Since the laptop is owned by the school, well. People from Bosnia, for example, might indeed feel "harrassed" by that picture.

A suspension for it is, to my feelings, creepy/disturbing/phobic. "Billy, change the wallpaper" should have been the reaction.

You should be allowed to have whatever you want as your wallpaper on the computer when it's not in class. Babies raped by baboons with chainsaws if that's what you want. As long as it's private, the school shouldn't have anything to say.
There's nothing offencive on having an opinion on something. CCCP flag plus a nuclear missile is totally okay wallpaper for class.

It's bizarre. The one thing the pic can represent is the war in former Yugoslavia... Not sure who would use it as a wallpaper or why. I can see how people from Bosnia can feel "harrassed", but in that case it'd make more sense to use the flag of one belligerent side or the other.

You mean, it's the School's computer, but it doesn't have a say on what is put on it? That's strange.
Also, while it's not offensive to have an opinion on something - let's say that everyone should be free to have sex with everyone else no matter consent or age -, but it would be offensive to have pictures demonstrating in detail what you mean.
It is also questionable whether it was offensive or not to show off a concentration camp picture with a Nazi flag and Hitler foto and title it with, "His only mistake was that he didn't finish the job".
Bottom line is, you just should think again.

If the school owns the computer, then ofc it should be able to decide what's on it.
But kicking him out because of a flag?

So you disagree with Joonas that there is nothing offensive in having an opinion? Because Salamandre opined on something, right?
