Heroes1 - unusual campaign strategies
A few months ago I completed all 4 campaigns in Heroes 1. However, I did it in a bit unusual way:
- Knightlock: a Knight army led by a Warlock
- Sorcarian: a Sorceress army led by a Barbarian
- Barberess: a Barbarian army led by a Sorceress
- ???: a Warlock army led by a knight
Impressions:
Sorcarian is an absurdly easy strategy. Sorceress units have a big advantage in initiative, 2 flyers, 2 shooters, and this includes two fast units. Barbiarian increases damage dealt and doesn't care about anything else. He doesn't have to, most of the time the enemy doesn't get a single move. The only time you can have problems is when resources are scarce. You almost never get any losses.
Knightlock is hard, or rather frustrating. It reveals how weak the Warlock hero actually is. Spell power is the least useful stat, especially that enchantments can be overriden (only one enchantment on a creature at a time). In one or two campaign scenarios I had access to Lightning Bolt and it was very useful, but I still struggled in later scenarios. In another one, a big open one with a desert in the middle, I won like a "poor man's sorceress", by getting Dimension Door. Sometimes offensive spells let you work around your army's siege incapability, but don't count on that. Strongly affected by chance.
Barberess is okay. Your army is decent, and high knowledge means you have a big supply of Bless, Haste and other spells which work well on Barbarian units. You don't have to recharge your spells very often. But I still felt like my success was largely thanks to my basic army.
Warlock led by a knight - a killing machine. While you are more prone to losses than Sorcarian, Defense Skill boost is a good fit for your mostly melee units and your attack is still good. You combine the strongest (stat-wise) army with a very good hero. In big clashes, where losses are inevitable, you actually take least losses.
Don't let people mislead you into thinking Warlock units are overpriced. Leave hydras at home, minotaurs are probably better than cavalries which are 1 level higher. Don't wait for dragons, rush. But if you meet heavy resistance, build dragons and send them to your primary hero, who should already be kicking ass at frontline.

... So ? Anything new ?
In Heroes 1 Warlock is absurdly overpowered. You can even attack with Hydra as they are along with Minotaur and Dragon, the absolute H1 weapon.
And dont tell me other faction can beat Warlock - no, they can't.

Along with the behavior of fully quoting the previous post. Forums start to look idiotic.

Could all of you stop writing negative things without explanations?
Things like "This is...nonsense" doesn't help in anyway, therefor it is pure nonesense!

Should be self-explanatory nonsense. Or did never ever anyone beat Warlock?

We speak about Heroes 1.
Warlock in it is seriously overpowered.
People can beat it, if you outplay someone you can always beat him given any rules.
People from the same skill - I don't see Warlock being defeated, unfortunately no.

in homm 2, a barbarian was a threat in early game. ogre lords were as much a threat as minotaurs kings.

From my humble online experience I can say that knights rule in early game. Warlock usually die by the time when he manages to build dragons, though good spell power and damaging spells can save him. Most dangerous in mid-game is, undoubtfully, a barbarian. With trolls built week 1, no neutrals make real danger.
Of course, as in H1 there are no markets, every faction can fail due to inability to build lvl6 dwelling week 2 or 3. Knights usually build Paladins week 1.

I don't know about you, but I started this thread to talk about unusual strategies. Not about balance. In Heroes 1 and 2, you can easily mix and match hero types and army types. My post was an exploration of unconventional warfare. At the time I played the game originally, these strategies never occured to me. Hell, most of walkthroughs and guides for Heroes 1 and 2 don't distinguish between hero type and army type. You get stuff along the lines "Barbarian is a good hero type because he gets trolls.". No, he doesn't.
My impression is that H1 warlock was given a powerful army because he sucks as a hero.
Also, balance wasn't that important in a single-player game. Is it really so wrong that knight and barbarian factions are expected to attack earlier or they won't have much of a fighting chance ? I don't know about you, but winning a scenario as a Knight, against overwhelming odds, feels very nice for me.

I don't remember if I've already played that way. of course there was the super hero with units from different towns, but usually, most of his army was still from his native town.
