The strangest of things...
Happen to the strangest of people.
Let me tell you a story of a young boy who aspired to be a slayer of giant reptilian beasts known as dragons. It ran in the clan, his father was a dragon slayer, so were all his uncles. I say ‘were’ as they were all eaten or barbequed in the line of duty. An honorable way to die, but it left the poor boy with little guidance. By the age of 14 his family had all been hunted down by the dragons, the hunters had become the prey. His mother died during a house fire, the dragons were quick to deny any involvement with the incident, saying they were on holidays… a likely story. The boy was forced into hiding, using the skills he had learnt to fend for himself.
Loneliness does funny things to a person. Naming the different rats that frequent your makeshift home, arguing with various animals at the watering hole and eating sour rams testies to name a few. It was during the eating of a testie that the boy realized,
“Why am I sitting in this cave eating testies and naming rats? I’m a dragon slayer, not some sissy pink umbrella cocktail drinker!”
With that the boy began his quest to avenge his family and end the terror the dragons have been causing. He took up his sword, gathered whatever valuables he had and left the cave, determined to kill the few remaining dragons in the land.

His journey took him to the nearby town of Ignatius. He needed supplies, but money was going to be an issue. Not much survived when his house burned down, only some gems and trinkets buried in a lockbox next to the house. It was here he met a man who called himself ‘The Hydra’; he worked at the general store. An odd fellow, one can only assume where the name came from. He seemed friendly and certainly only had one head. One could say the Hydra wasn’t who he appeared to be, but then again, neither was the young slayer. After gathering some healing potions, preserved foods and a trendy set of sun glasses, he approached the counter.
“Excuse me, do you sell sour rams testies?”
The puzzled look on his face was evidence that he didn’t stock them, must be a seasonal thing….. The boy explained to him about his lack of money and The Hydra agreed to take a gem or two as payment. When the young slayer opened the lockbox to get a gem out, the merchant took a step back. He had a look of shock in his eyes. It would seem that he was fixated on a particular trinket, a family jewel that had been passed down through generations of dragon slayers.
“Where on earth did you get that trinket? The last of the dragon slayers died years ago, where did you find it? ”
The boy told The Hydra his story, explaining to him what happened with his family. The Hydra was shocked; everyone had believed the dragon slayers were all dead. He quickly closed up his shop and lead the slayer to a cellar door cleverly hidden behind the counter. Below was a room that one could only describe as…. Boring. It was filled with books, scrolls, parchments; it seemed the Hydra was a well-educated man, who spent a majority of his time studying about Heroes, of both Might and Magic.
