Hey, HUGE q that may cause me to have a heart attack if I'm right...
Well, I only found out about Heroes IV yesterday, but I own Heroes 3, Heroes 1, and Heroes 2 (including its expansion pack). Throughout all of them the castles always got more buildings and thus more different kinds of creatures available for one hero. For example, in Heroes 3 you could have 7 diff kinds of creatures per castle. Now I hear that there are only 4 LEVELS!!! Yes, I know about the choices for each level and I also know all the creatures in the game, but ONLY 4 DIFFERENT CREATURE TYPES?!!?? *throws up* Or are there other buildings in the castles where you can get more diff kinds of creatures? Also, what's up with all these neutral creatures?

actually there are 8 creatures in each town...2 on each level

But you can only build one building per level so it is four... in the preserve there is a portal of summoning where you can get extra creatures..

Wohoo! I want to be the preserve (I love elves/animals and I think the tigers and wolves are awesome). What can you summon through the portal in the preserve? Anyway, do you think 5 creatures is enough? I don't understand why they have back-tracked...

Since u can now use heros as units,you can end up with 2heros+5units on the battlefield.
As for the portal,only info i found:
Allows additional troop recruitment.
Doesnt say if its from regular troops,map dwellings(like dungeon in H3) or maybe u can recruit "summoned" creatures like elementals,....
Preserve has decent units,great magic.
My only question is about fairy dragon,with such crappy stats,i hope he has some GOOD spells cuz 15atk for a lvl4 unit is pretty low.If he's coming with lvl4 spells,will be another story.

they have back tracked because they don't have enough inpiration to create 14 creatures a town (2 times 7)
through the portal you will be able to summon (like dungeon... it was dungion right?) the strongest creature coming from dwellings on the map.

There are only four levels of creatures because the economy is slower than in other games. Money will be more scarce, so you won't be able to afford troops of 7 or 8 levels, let alone their required dwellings.

Which really sucks. I want the whole battle strategy part of the game, rather than the whole economic lesson... but that's just me.

O Well
They could atleast have 5 levels of creatures.
67 creatures is not bad.. but many of the mare summoned and neutrall. There are only 48 town creatures.
I hope they will add much creatures in the expansion!
Creatures all the way! I can't wait to see the Manticore in this graphics! Howeverr..*looking at the ugly beholder/fire elemental* I start to... nevermind..

I think HOMM4 ends up having more units than any other HOMM before it.. Remember, the unit count in previous games included "upgraded" units, and HOMM3 had an upgrade for every unit, whereas HOMM4 has no upgrades at all (I suppose there's no more use for the Hill Fort).

They have to make boring expansions with NO new creatures in it?
Only with more boring artifacts?
I hope it won't be that way..
They can always add a sea town that is like the Stronghold just without magic and stuff. and some new neutralls.

I have always wanted that HOMM IV would include 5 levels (one for EACH level). I got that idea when I noticed that you cannot play HOMM III Necropolis or Inferno, because you can build both Imps and Skeletons. I know, you can leave the other alone or turn Imps into Skeletons (I will do that) but still... imagine 10 creatures for every castle.

I know you're a +350 gold, you always think about money. But I don't think you can have less creature levels because the economy is slower. I think the economy is slower because you can aford less creature levels. We will probably never be able to give the right version, but I think so.

No the reason for only 4 levels is not because of slower economy, but the slower economy does happen to support it.. From what we already know, resources are hard to get. You get much less produced from town structures than you used to, and mines now need to be "built" for a large sum of money. While this is not the cause for the fewer levels of creatures, it is there for a reason..
There are a lot of units.. To double the amount would be asking too much. That is a LOT of extra units to produce.. do you have the imagination to think of them all? Most of them will probably end up being uninspired, and I'd rather not have them at all if that's the case. Next there would be a lot of dwellings.. The town designs might not allow that. And if there were 8 levels there may as well be twice the amount of towns, and get rid of the "alternate" creatures.
The game plays very differently to previous HOMMs, and the fewer levels is probably integral to the new play style. The 4th level creatures are still strong.. They are comparable to the 7th levels from HOMM3. If there were 8 levels (because they usually add a new level after each title) and the 4th level creatures became 8th level, then they would only be adding a lot of "intermediate" creatures in between, making it harder to reach the 8th level creatures.. Would you rather build them sooner as 4th level creatures or have to waste resources and time and get them later as 8th level? They are the same units. OR they could leave 4th level the way they are and add 4 more levels of even more powerful creatures, but that is simply unbalancing.
I think you'll enjoy the game even with only 4 levels of creatures. And yeah, the +350 gold over the years has made me a rich girl.
