Swiches, variables, and other misc. ideas.
It would be nice to have a swich system, so like for example, when you capture "Castle X", a swich is activated and wandering creatures pertaining to the castle's terrain would increase their hostility, (or if the castle was ruled by an evil overlord, the creatures would be more likely to join you). Then, the allies of that nation, which were neutral to you, become hostile. Also, after having conquered that castle, some creature generators (in the adventure map) would decrease generated creatures, markets would increase prices, and a long etc...
Using swiches there would be unlimited possibilities in map making, as you could make almost anything happen.
And even better would be to use variables, which are exactly like swiches, but that have a numeric factor instead than only ON and OFF, so it would be like a swich with many positions.
An example of use for a variable is, someone hires you to rescue the peasants in the red player's terrain, who is indiscriminately slaing them to get skeletons. Every time you get a peasant stack, the variable "Rescued peasants" increases by 1 (but they do not join you, instead they flee with your help, and you don't see them again). When you return to get your reward, if the variable is lower than 3, you will get no reward. For every unit above 3, you get 100 gold.
An other use for a variable, you abandon your castle to retrieve some mines.
There are, say, 7 mines. Each time you get one the variable "Mines got" increases 1. But after getting all the mines, there is a revolt in your castle for whatever reason, and a bunch of hostile peasant stacks (which
were set to apear when the variable "Mines got" reached 7) apear arround your castle.
Other nice features:
Buildings without fixed function:
If you want a building that does something, but you think that an other one looks better in that terrain, just take the building you like, remove it's default function and set it to whatever you like, as for example "sell artifacts".
It would be nice if you got to choose which artifacts to sell, as well as choosing more than one kind of creature in a generator. That way you could make something like a school of mercenaries, in the which you can hire pikemen and swordsmen.
Something similar with artifacts. It would be nice if you can change the use of an artifact (altough, it could get somewhat anyoing, if an artifact you think does something works differently, then, there could be a set of "empty" artifacts, whose effects must be given).
And in the battle system, what if the hero can act more than once a round depending on a skill, speed, morale and/or other factors. And heroes could not only do magic, but it could also use artifacts. For example, the vial of
blood (health+3) could be used on a creature, for it to make effect. Perhaps some artifacts could be used a limited amount of times (then they would become "Items", more than "artifacts").
I sent these Ideas to the Homm4 team, and they replied that they would be given consideration, but they were unable to give any comments.
What do you think?

well...
i can see the senario now "bandits are holding one of the windmills in the northern section of the map, you have 3 days after checking on them before the bandits will get restliss and kill of the people running the mill" you have say 8 mills in the top half of the map, all say "mill" but one of them, when checked, puts you into a battle with some bandits, if you take too long your mill won't produce resource for you, every turn the bandit size raises, so every turn you take the challenge gets harder,
yeah, sound like a cool idea to me, and i also like the artifacts having a "blank" set, that you can custumize, this is more realistic than the idea in the "artifacts" page about creating your own, as here the space is there, and there is a limit, with giving veriables, so you set the artifacts rating (1-relic) and give it some powers off of a list according to its rating, name it something cool, and your off

Yes thats cool, they should make a map editor like there is in StarCraft, with locations, flags, switches and stuff like that.
