Uh... ex-Ubisoft and EA devs. Prejudice set to maximum...
Anyway, the screenshots look nice but I just can't help but be HIGHLY suspicious about the whole thing, given the two names above.

LOL even forum moderator has a link I can't remember if it was him who gushed on H6.
But trailer (first part) is a big turn-off because it's not about the game.

This looks like it has extraordinary potential for my tastes. Unless the reviews turn up absolutely horrible I'm almost definitely going to snag it.
I don't have much interest in the whole "democratic" aspect of the development though. I'm an elitist that believes development decisions are usually best left to people that know what the hell they're talking about.

With several previews already out and all praising the game it seems it lives to the expectations. It speaks a lot having in mind that nobody has played anything but the alpha yet. The game just become available for pre-ordering on Steam. It's pretty cheap as well, and if you pre-order you get to play the alpha. New races have been revealed as well (5 out of 8), and there's a new trailer on youtube:

Every 4x game looks promising on paper, question is if it will be just as good when released. Look what happened with Sword of the Stars 2. The other potential danger is to make the game overly complex or overly simple, i.e. to burrow the player under tons of in-game features which make one turn last 15-30 minutes at best (if it is TBS and most of the 4x are) in the first case or to make a "quality over quantity" gameplay (ex-Ubisoft, beware) which gets boring after the second replay. The genre is not for everybody, both in the players' and the developers' cases.

I'm playing the Alpha, and the game is fast-paced to support MP play.

Steam says the game will be available July 4. So, anyone who played the beta, how was it?

Looks good! Have got a lot of mates who love 4x space game so will have to spread the word.
Very nice interface! A good merger of classic gameplay with modern graphics.

ugh, I read this game comes with steamworks & only works thru steam [ofc their FAQ doesn't reveal this], so in addition to a video I saw of less-than-impressive battle scene [I don't think it reaches MOO or MOO2 standards] & those ubi links, this game is no-go for me unfortunately.

You shouldn't forget that the game aims to be playable in MP, which means, space battles cannot last for half an eternity.
The game is centered around playability and accessability.

From what I've seen, they last half a minute, no matter the size and the composition of the opposing fleets. That's too fast even for StarCraft.

What has time to do with it? It's not a tactical space battle game.

The strategical aspect looks simplified compared to most of the other 4x games, the tactical one looks almost non-existent and the battles are hardly spectacular. So what's left?

The "battles" are non existant in games like Civilization as well. In ES a battle consists of 3 phases, long-range, mid-range and short-range with different weapons, defense technologies and additional stuff affecting performance there. You have leader personalities influencing performance, system technologies (battles take place in systems, different hull sizes and tactical options (you can pick a tactical option for every phase).
Once that's done, a battle "takes place", since you cannot do anything (there is no "battlefield" to maneuver in).
I was very sceptical at first, whether this would suffice, but strangely enough it does.

And yet, are the space battles better than MOO, MOO2 or MOO3? {which I would have thought was the bare minimum tactical-wise - they didn't last that long did they?}
What about ground combat? (comparable to the MOOs?)
[yeah I know I compare too much to MOOs & MOM]
But yeah if MP playability, then they'd like it to be faster but I doubt how that would go these days when 4X often means long slow games with lots of thinking due to many choices.
